vswan Posted November 25, 2020 #4 Share Posted November 25, 2020 We booked the ships transfers and were one of the last flights to arrive. The bus was waiting for us. We had just completed an aprox. 5 hour flight and planned to grab a bite to eat at the airport before finding the transfer. Didn't work. LOL Had no idea that the bus trip was 3 hours. Another year we had the reverse itinerary. Took the train from the cruise terminal to Anchorage. Seemed like a long haul, but was very beautiful once the sun was up so we could see the surroundings. They had a chow car on the train serving reindeer sausage. If you have a choice, do the train.

omago4th Posted November 26, 2020 #6 Share Posted November 26, 2020 if you do bus transfer they are at airport, train you likely have to get to it, (unless HAL has that choice offer). HAL takes your bags at airport and you see them in your cabin, I love that. no dealing with more than my carry on, that always has snacks in it. Having sailed on Coral Princess in 2019 from Whittier, the cruise terminal and the embarkation process is among the easiest that I have experienced at any port. There were no food facilities within the terminal building. Some are available in the town, but not near-by. Walking distance? Yes, I think. Maybe best to wait until one embarks the ship and head to the Lido for food. The bus trip was not unpleasant. It's scenic, particularly if this will be your visit to our 49th State. Cruzaholic41 Posted November 27, 2020 #10 Share Posted November 27, 2020 Just FYI, the bus trip to Whittier is only about an hour and a half, not 3 hours as previously stated. Another option, if you fly in a day in advance, is to rent a car. It would need to be Avis, because that’s who is in Whittier for the return. Rare Crew News Posted November 29, 2020 #12 Share Posted November 29, 2020 It must be noted that travel into Whittier must pass through a single-lane tunnel that is open at the bottom of the hour for about 15 minutes. If you are late arriving at the tunnel entrance, be prepared to wait for up to 45 minutes for the next opening. Departure from Whittier by land is at the top of the hour. Brewgirl1 Posted November 30, 2020 #13 Share Posted November 30, 2020 We flew in early and rented a car at the airport and dropped it off in whittier. I don't know if they still do that, but we sure had fun.
Rare cruisequeen4ever Posted December 5, 2020 #14 Share Posted December 5, 2020 You fly into Anchorage and can either take a bus transfer, the train, or rent a car. The bus transfer is about 1.5 hours and is scenic along the coast. The train is longer at about 2.5-3 hours but is the most scenic, comfortable, and relaxing. Renting a car allows you the freedom to stop off along the way but is often cost prohibitive as they usually charge a gigantic supplement to drop the car off in Whittier. If you rent a car, the drive only takes about 1.25 hours. At the end of the drive, regardless of the mode of transport, everybody must go through a timed tunnel to reach Whittier. The train has priority. If you rent a car, make sure you check the tunnel schedule, so you don’t have a long wait. Whittier is beautiful and much more convenient than Seward.
