James4me Posted March 22, 2021 #1 Share Posted March 22, 2021 Well at least those of you deciding to cruise and wear a face mask, you won’t be able to smell the smoke in the casino 👍 1
Rare livingonthebeach Posted March 22, 2021 #2 Share Posted March 22, 2021 I could be wrong but I don't believe smoking will even be allowed in the casino when cruises restart. 14

Since I'm not a smoker this would be very positive, welcomed news to me. Not only do I find the smell disgusting but in the past there would be people sitting at slot machines who never played and just sat there to smoke not allowing access to certain machines other people wanted to play. 1

yogimax Posted March 22, 2021 #7 Share Posted March 22, 2021 In my neighborhood, the greatest offenders to wearing masks have been the smokers, Seems they don't think they need to mask up because they are smoking.

Funny how on all my RCCL cruises people would be getting sick by day 4 coughing all over the place spreading illness, including to me most of the time. But on Celebrity I've never seen that happen. Coincidence?
dswallow Posted March 22, 2021 #13 Share Posted March 22, 2021 If the improved filtration and air replacement standards that Royal Caribbean has touted are actually true there should be a dramatic reduction in cigarette odors in the casino. If they followed Celebrity's policy and banned smoking in the casino, it would eliminate 100% of the smell. The number of non-smoking casino players heavily outweigh the number of casino playing smokers. Beyond me why they haven't gotten rid of the smoking section sooner. If I was looking to increase revenue in the casino, the first thing I would do is make the entire casino non-smoking.

It'll probably happen sooner or later, but it's pretty easy to see there are currently large numbers of smokers in the casino, at slot machines and at tables. I've been in businesses that allowed smoking that actually had proper air handling and filtration and it was absolutely nothing anywhere as bad as the casinos on the ships. It really isn't rocket science to properly ventilate and filter that area. And they could also easily separate two areas, at least on the larger ships, such that the smoking side was completely enclosed/separated from the non-smoking side. Except other places have touted the same and it simply does not work to any appreciable degree imo.

Separation would not be bad but don't count on it. One issue I see is if smoking is continued, everyone will be posting on social media that they, or others on the ship are coughing. Then everyone will have to get tested that appears sick. The media will love it- they hate cruise ships.

The bean counters within RCI and the casino operation only care about the bottom line and my WAG is that they smoke even less than the US population in general. The canisters can contain their plume of smoke of choice: cigarette smoke, cigar smoke, etc. There should be different flow rates: slower death (off) and quicker death (on). This would allow them to keep their poison to themselves. Edited March 22, 2021 by soremekun 3

Royal did do that as a test on one of their ships within the last 2-3 years. Looks like the numbers proved otherwise as they abandoned the test. cruises from other countries are also smoke free, Australia for one d so they do have the data to base their decisions on.

The test was done pre-covid. Maybe now things will be different. If masks are required indoors, I don't see how smoking could be allowed in an indoor casino. I don’t disagree with you that I think there may be changes to the smoking in the casino I just don’t think it will be based on revenue.
