You sure can. We wear shorts and sneakers or boat shoes and a Tommy Bahama type shirt to dinner on non-cruise elegant nights. All within the suggested dress guidelines.

Basically we cruise carnival because we hate dressing up. Our rules for the kids are no completely athletic looking shorts and no oversized logo teeshirts. That might be OK too and I wouldn’t judge, but I like making my kids wear something slightly different. We do dress up for elegant night if we choose to go to it. We decided the next cruise we are not going to it because we hate packing for it. A little known fact is if you really want the lobster tails you can get them in the other restaurants on elegant night if you are on the Mardi Gras

On "elegant night" you can wear a pair of slacks and a sparkly top while your DH wears a pair of dressy jeans and a collared shirt.  This is Carnival.

You can even wear the dark jeans on formal nights. In fact, I've done that with a dress shirt, no tie, but with a blazer.

This next cruise will be the first that I'm not packing my suit and ties. Instead, I'm bringing some chinos and slacks and a couple of button down long sleeve shirts (for formal night).

On Carnival just wearing clean underwear is dressing up to most folks. So dark jeans is like formal wear.

I never pack a coat and tie on Carnival. Slacks and golf shirt on night when shorts are not allowed (aka Elegant Night).

On casual nights I wear cargo shorts, a polo and sandals and the 2 elegant nights it's jeans, a polo and tennis shoes. You'll be just fine!
