Mask now required on Apex

3% that means about 60 people have covid on the ship.

IMHO I wont get onboard. The risk is too high especially when the cruises are in Europe.

A lot of people get stranded oversea because of contracting covid after the cruise and can't fly home according to plan.

How many is "a lot" ? Probably 0.01% or less of all travelers. Of course you're free to do your own risk assessment but there are way more than 3% with actual Covid around you every day. Of course you're right, an overseas cruise would be an inconvenience with that although that pesky testing requirement should hopefully go away soon, at least for U.S. citizens.

That's a bummer, but we know what we are getting into when we cruise.

We thought that too.
Allow me to enlighten you.
We are people who travel in Suites and take World Cruises.
We disembarked Queen Victoria on March 17. 2020 having completed a circumnavigation of South America.
We are in our early 70s.We figured then that  we hadat the most five more good years to travel.
So we have been locked down for 40% of that time.
My husband had cancer surgery 9 months ago.
He is supposedly cancer free and we were cleared to travel.
We had our shots and boosters and are really good at using the actual sinks wherever food is served.
We choose the Retreat when we booked because we thought that the passenger count would be lower and that social distancing would be easier.
Except the Revenue Department decided to oversell the upsells to Retreat.
We thought that we would take the risk. That is how cavalier we were at the beginning.
And then on Day 8 ,prior to any land access, my husband tested positive for Covid.
He felt a little headachy. He took an at home test. He was positive. I was negative.
We called Medical. They came and tested us both.
HE was taken to deck 12. His meals were served on paper products.
I will not bore you with the details of the medical care , but suffice it to say, there are no antivirals onboard and bring your own Tylenol.

He was contacted twice a day and asked for his temp and blood ox.
When we arrived in Civitavecchia he was moved to Deck 6. Food was now delivered on china and glassware.
I tested positive on May 9. I joined him.  My thermometer was provided on my second day. I had a fever for 36 hours. I was called and checked on twice during this period.
We are stranded in Italy until May 21. Celebrity is being wonderful in terms of this situation.
But, this is no country for old men.
And NO we did not know what we were getting into when we embarked.
May 1st changed a lot of things and the cruise lines and Nations did also.

That required test to fly home per the White House Covid coordinator is NOT on the table for change at present. Not a good sign,

Remember that the 3% is the threshold reporting number by the CDC color system.  There may be a higher number of infected on board.  Also consider the number of people not reporting their symptoms to medical for fear of isolation.

The number to initiate a CDC investigation is 0.3%.  It goes Red when 1% of crew is involved. So I’d say 3% of guests is a significant number.

The CDC rating is applied to ships in US waters; nevertheless, it is a benchmark for determining the level of infection.

If X says there are 3% with Covid on board you can bet it is much much higher. I would guess 5-10 times higher, with people asymptomatic, people who are not reporting they are sick, and people who are pre-symptomatic.

What is your guess?

I believe this is still on the transatlantic ending in Amsterdam on the 14th..I wonder what their quarantine rules are..and how many passengers will choose to stay on board to finish it…

As these reports continue I get more and more anxious for our Greek cruise out of Rome in September.

I’m guessing the transatlantic is still subject to CDC rules, and Apex has been classed as “Red” based on these rules:

https://www.cdc.gov/quarantine/cruise/cruise-ship-color-status.html#faq-1

2 key points there that suggest Apex is red are:

  • Require mask use by all passengers and crew indoors and crowded outdoor areas;
  • Send written notification to passengers on the current, previous, and subsequent voyages informing them of the COVID-19 conditions and measures being taken to reduce transmission on board;

According to the link you gave us, the Apex isn't being tracked anymore.  And the next ship that goes red is the first one I can recall seeing.

On Apex and in quarantine. Felt Ill on Saturday, May 8.  No temperature. I attributed overall tiredness due to adding an hour every night to our clocks.  Stayed in suite all day with new symptoms—cough and sore throat. Self quarantined. I had home test kit which showed no Covid. Next morning I called Medical and tested positive.

My husband was moved to another suite.  He’s tested every morning and is negative.  He is not permitted in any restaurant but otherwise, masked, he goes to the bars and shows.

The cabin attendants have taken excellent care of me delivering whatever I want from the restaurants, providing clean towels but not permitted to come into the room.

Medical gave me cough suppressant and Tylenol as well as cough drops. Tested blood oxygen and temp twice.  Felt like a really bad cold.

I will be tested tomorrow, the “5th day”.  They do not count the day you are tested as day one, instead call it day zero.  If I’m still positive I have to continue quarantine for the full 10 days.

we are back to back with a cabin change—no word yet as to how that will be pulled off (tomorrow is disembarkation for 1st cruise.)

Consider this: If I had called when I first became ill on Saturday, I would have been tested again this past Thursday.  It is worrisome to hear cruisers say if they get sick they won’t get tested to avoid quarantine, possibly exposing others in the process.

Quantine is the pits.  I’m vaccinated, boosted and almost fanatical about hygiene. On the 8th day the first 6 cases reported.  I was one of them.  Someone brought the bug onboard and Celebrity appears to be doing everything possible to contain it.

We will continue to cruise in the future.

Thanks for your very informative post.   Will be interesting to hear what happens with the second cruise.   I tested positive on the day before turn around day but was on the old policy and we were escorted off the ship and I had to setup accommodations, testing etc.

The CDC website shows the latest day's update. The website cruzely.com is monitoring the data and has a chart showing past days status. The Apex apparently dropped off the CDC radar by May 2.

Stay safe all.

So - is it true that Apex is now requiring masks be worn by EVERYONE?  (as the OP insinuated )

Rest snipped for space.

Sorry to hear that you’re sick. Glad to see that Celebrity is reacting. I’m sure we will see more safety protocols put back into place. I hope that your symptoms dissipate quickly and that you’re negative on the next test.

Sorry to hear that you became one of the dreaded statistics. Hopefully you test negative on day 5.
I find it really strange that hubby is allowed to mingle in bars and the theatre but not the restaurant. I wonder what the reasoning is? Close contact with waiters??

Needing to remove the mask to eat and drink.

Oh this is not good......we have some decisions to make and quickly.....we are to fly to Amsterdam on May 23rd and board the Apex on the 26th.  I'll be watching this very closely. We have cancelled twice and I really didn't want to cancel a third time.
