Just booked Oosterdam - any reviews or feedback from recent passengers?

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone!

On a whim, I booked my family of 4 in two verandah staterooms on an upcoming sailing on the Oosterdam! I'm really excited about it. We were planning to be in Italy anyway when I saw a casino offer come through, so we decided to jump on it.

I am having trouble finding any recent reviews/photos/feedback from passengers who have sailed the Oosterdam recently.

If you have anything to share, I'd love to hear it!

Help?? Only a view veranda room left at the back of the ship on rotterdam deck.... are these noisy spots?

Are you posting on the correct thread?  This thread is about reviews of the Oosterdam since she started sailing recently.

I believe I am am on the right thread,  Deck 7 is called the Rotterdam deck on the OOsterdam. I want to know if anyone has booked these   verandah rooms and what their opinions were of them. Thanks.

@liamur14 thanks for the clarification.  I haven't been in those specific rooms on Oosterdam but looking at the deck plans, I wouldn't expect them to have any noise problems because deck 6 and 8 surround them with only cabins.....no public spaces or loud venues etc.  You can look at pictures of deck 7 verandah cabins at Halfacts.com here:

I've spent 4 weeks on the Oosterdam and really do like the ship!  I wouldn't hesitate to book any of the cabins on deck 7 unless you are very susceptible to motion at the extreme aft or forward of the ship.

Good luck and happy cruising,

~Nancy

I've never stayed in an aft view cabin, but many people swear by them!  Look around the HAL boards and there are several threads talking about aft view cabins.  But some people say the vibration from the engines bothers them.....so someone with direct Oosterdam experience will need to address that question.  Our wonderful ship engineer expert on Cruise Critic @chengkp75 has discussed the general aspects of ship vibration which has many variables such as ship design, speed, wind, sea state, etc.  Check just one of many threads discussing aft cabins in general:

I personally prefer to be more mid ship for a couple reasons such as proximity to areas on the ship I frequent and ship movement.  It's a long walk to the forward part of the ship from the very back! (I have a bad knee)

@liamur14In order to get more/targeted responses I suggest that you start a new thread for your specific question because the Original Poster is wanting general Oosterdam reviews.  Don't want to hijack his/her thread. 🙂

Thanks Nancy I put a temp hold on deck 6 cabin 6149, Holland's TA said she books that verandah. She said it had good views from that side of the ship going on this cruise.  Pretty excited now! thanks again

Following, we are on the  Oosterdam August 21 Greek cruise from Venice for 14 days. I see above from @Storylady  that the Oosterdam was in a recent dry dock and would like to know what refurbishments, if any were done?

I truly can’t say. The Oosterdam photos that I saw were of the ship sitting on blocks. From the more detailed photos that I saw of the Noordam, they scrapped all the barnacles and sea life off the bottom is the ship. They then checked it and repainted. Ships go faster when they don’t have the sea life dragging them. The Noordam was painted everywhere on the outside. I suspect that carpets were replaced. Not sure what they may have done to the staterooms. I haven’t seen any photos from HAL fans that have been cruising on her.

Thank you Oakridger, do you think the view off the back is as good as the side of the ship? I was thinking of the motors for the noise. Thanks again.

It is noises the closer you get to the aft of the ship. But I am really sensitive to noise. So we book the middle of the ship either side of the middle elevators.

That is a very good location. We usually book Deck 6 aft either Port or Starboard side. VD 6149 is on the starboard side and is not an adjoining room with a door to the other stateroom. Just five staterooms from the rear elevators for the MDR on Decks 2 + 3 and up to the Lido on Deck 9.

It should be a good cruise.  However,  when we booked we had ports in Santorini and Sauda, Crete which got canceled in April by HAL with no explanation, they substituted a second Mykonos stop for Santorini and gave us another seaday for dropping Crete. Crete and Santorini were reasons we booked this cruise. So we are not at all happy with HAL and this will be our last with them. We have 5 future cruises booked with Celebrity now, including one prior to this cruise from Rome.
