I have been reading a lot of reviews lately and have noticed more and more people saying they are testing positive once they return home. Now like most reviews people are quick to review a bad experience over a good one, so that got me thinking how many are returning from their cruise and have been fine?

I tested positive when I got home from my Magic cruise on May 13, but The last night I had developed a cough, fever, loss of taste and smell, stayed in cabin away from everyone. My taste and smell have just now started to come back.  Tested again on the 19 and was still positive, got a negative on the 27th. I had covid in February.   My husband also got it, 2 days behind me. We got steroids , cough syrup, and Paxlovid from Dr.

We returned just fine, not sick with anything. So we didn't test, no reason to. But then I couldn't accurately answer your second question. LOL! Since we didn't have a reason to test, we didn't. However, we've all had Covid before, last year.

My wife and I were cruising when the ships were not as full and there was mask requirement in place. However, with the relaxed rules. I just canceled two cruises' as I personally don't want my wife or I to catch Covid. I think people are getting sick and not wanting to be quarantined so there not reporting to the ship's doctors.

The ships a fuller than being noted by Carnival, more people are getting sick with Covid. I honestly think there should be mandatory Covid test on debarkation.

No problems with any of our cruises so far this year - January, February and May. January was 60% full, but February and May were pretty full. Carnival Legend for all three. Didn’t test after any of them since we had no symptoms. My husband and I haven’t had Covid at all so far, at least not that we’ve known about, but neither of us has been sick with anything since this all started.  I think we’re doing pretty good, especially since I am a cashier at a busy grocery store in coastal Delaware, albeit only 10-12 hours a week. I figured I would pick up something from someone, as I have had many a cough, cold, allergy, etc. medicines pass by my register, but knock on wood, we’ve been extremely lucky.

Looking at the CDC data, 90 cruise ships have Orange status vs only 3 with Green status. None in Yellow or Red. Last year there were a lot more Green. I think this only reflects cases reported on the ships.

We were a group of 15 on a recent Mexican Riviera cruise.  Five of our group tested positive once at home.  Mrs Ldubs and I continue to test negative.

I did not vote in the poll because I wasn't sure how to account for our group's experience.

I am currently on the Legend, I will say, it's me and my party as well as the staff who are wearing masks, all others are acting as if there is no pandemic/endemic going on.

I have been on 2 other cruises since November of 2021, followed all protocol (my personal protocol) , and have had no issue with COVID upon getting off the ship.  There is no doubt in my  mind folks will exit this ship with COVID. There are too many folks crammed into elevators, food lines, casino, et al  not have COVID cases.

My suggestion to you is to mask up any time you are in motion on the ship, bring hand sanitizer and use it any time you handle anything prior to eating or drinking and try and social distance when possible.  It can be done, just like on land, but you need to believe in the process, it does work.

My dd and I cruised in January (ship 60% full) and February (80% full).  January still had mask mandate, and our February cruise hit the mark midcruise when masks were no longer mandated, but still should have been worn until the end, which few did.  No covid each Tim for us - but we were masked whole cruise.. We cruise again on the 28th, and will wear masks in terminal, and in public places on ship.  Not even sure we will eat in dining room. (didn't on other 2 recent cruises.). Will wear masks at shows, in casino, etc.  Will use tons of hand sanitizer, use the stairs, and have a great time while following our own personal mandates.

Survey question #2 only allows for people who have tested positive to answer but if you havent tested positive on the cruise you cannot answer using the supplied answers and therefore cannot complete the survey.  Data will be skewed.

We sailed the end of March.  No masks.  Pretty full.  People were jammed.  I even asked in our online group if anyone had tested positive after and no one had (not saying no one did, but I do not believe a large number did).  At the same time, I came home to a large outbreak after people on the ship telling me they thought covid was over.
I sailed from Texas.  The majority were from driving distance to port.  An area that had been open and gone through many waves.  Where I live, we hadn't.  We were just opening up so we were experiencing bigger waves.
I think that played a role.

But earlier in the year it didn't seem like there was much covid on the ships (there definitely still was).  I think this just has to do with the wave like nature of this infection and what is going on where the majority of people are coming from.

Sorry, I should have worded it differently or add another option. It was more of a "If you answered yes to question #1...) I was more curious to see if more people have cruised and returned fine, as more people are quick to post that they caught it rather than not. Which is understandable as they want to let others know incase of potential exposure

We have travelled to Las Vegas many times during the pandemic, our first trip was June 2020 and have been back 6 times since then, we have flown 3 times as well, been to universal studios, baseball games etc. All those trips have been fine as we wore masks when mandated to, Clorox wiped hotel rooms, plane seats etc hand sanitizer and washing often and never had any issues. I thought if we were going to catch covid it would have been on one of our trips. Figures we both caught it from a co worker bringing it into the office.

Another question I should have added to the poll was if you drove or flew to the port. I'm sure your risk is higher if you fly to the port with all the people in the airport, plane, shuttles etc. Luckily for us we are a little over an hour away from the terminal on a good day with no traffic. (75 miles)

And then what? Quarantine everyone on the ship?

Got off the Sunshine Sat. May 28th, tested positive 3 days later on following Tuesday, started with congestion, sore throat and headache on Monday (felt like sleeping for 2 days).  DH negative and no symptoms at all, DS negative (1st test as next test positive) last Friday.  I am much better and DS is at tail end with congestion.   We drove to Charleston and back home.

Truthfully, I feel like I got the virus after we got off the ship as we were home by noon on that Saturday and went about our business that day and Sunday (grocery shopping, picking up mail, Lowes Home Improvement etc.).  Could have been anywhere really I guess.

Your comment says more in just a few words than most people would think about. If they're that many people with covid on a ship, then that ship should return to port or not sail at all.  But from the looks of things its coming to that again.

We have sailed September 2021 and February and March 2022.  7 people total on a combination of the 3 cruises. 2 only had J&J vaccine, 2 had 2 doses, 3 with two doses and 1 booster, all 7 of us have returned from our cruises healthy and COVID free.

What would the acceptable number be before you cancel?

Six cruises since the restart, and no one traveling in our groups / associated with them tested positive afterwards.

Also, important to point out that the case count that goes into the CDC's cruise ship status color on the dashboard (basically 0.3% of total souls on board = Orange) DOES INCLUDE positive tests within 5 days of returning from a ship (if state or local health department collects / reports travel data after the test).

So, for instance, the Vista (the next ship I'm sailing) requires 16 persons to test positive on board or just after being on board. Not a high threshold, and certainly a far lower per capita threshold than is being experienced (even today) in many communities across the US.

If you're concerned about catching Covid on a ship, don't forget to be mindful that:

  • Clearly it is rare in context (0.03% without sustained infections = Orange)
  • Every soul on board has been tested or has documented recovery just prior to boarding
  • Your local grocery store, restaurant, etc. does not have mandatory testing
  • When someone tests positive on board, they quarantine them and anyone they've been in contact with
