Rare CCWineLover Posted May 29 #1501 Share Posted May 29 Totally agree. Free air promos usually don’t work well for us as we like to fly business from SFO. So the cruise itself price is often lower when there is no free air. For us Viking upgrades on the free air + air plus + deviations (we always sightsee on our own pre and post) most of time result in greater $ outlay and often their upgrades don’t include the domestic portion either. to us the free air promos are great for those who are fine with economy, and any flight routing - but not so good if you want deviations, Biz, and control over your schedule. Something for everyone!

Thanks for your collective wisdom and help 🙂 Most of Viking’s current promotions expired yesterday (May 31). I expect new ones to be posted within the next few days. I would definitely wait until you see what new promos expire on Jun 30th. They also might run a short notice 4 day 4th of July sale. They tend to do this around major holidays, so you might want to wait until at least then. Subscribe to this post so you’ll be informed of any new activity. Deciding when to book is always a crapshoot. Only you can decide if booking now and getting exactly what you want and paying full fare (especially since you need multiple rooms) is worth it. Again, I would wait at least a few days to see what they offer for June promotions. That being said, recent promotions tend to favor free or discounted air with a small room discount. Some on this forum don’t consider that a great deal because of flight inflexibility. Personally, we use Viking Air discounts on cruises all the time but we live close to two major airports and typically can get flights of our liking. Also worth noting that even if you book directly with Viking, you can transfer the reservation to a travel agent and the TA may give you an on board credit as a courtesy. Hanoj Posted June 2 #1507 Share Posted June 2 Glad we have been following this thread. We used VM5 by having our TA make a 72 hour hold reservation on May 31 for a November 2024 GET river cruise. Price with EBD and the Summer Solstice Sale went up $1,700 pp for our sailing. So we confirmed the booking today and made payment by e-check.

So while still probably a good deal, it’s not as good as previous promos. While the OBC disappeared for the 2025 WC, the price has dropped considerably, at least for the PVs which is what we've been looking at and comparing to the 2026 cruise (which remains the same price and continues to offer OBC). Ex: a PV2 in 2025 is now $13,000 pp lower. That MORE than makes up for any lost OBC, and one also saves more money on trip insurance. Wish we could do 2025 but we won't get home from a 72 day cruise until the day the WC leaves LA. I know ... First World problems. 😉 Edited June 2 by zelker 2

Yep, free air and Silver Spirits Beverage package have been the featured discounts lately. If either/both of those are of value to you, there are some great deals out there. We just book an insane deal ( to us ) on a Daube Waltz cruse in November. Snagged free air, silver spirits bev package, a modest room discount, and past customer discount. I don't get why free air is such a point on contention around here...if you don't like it, don't book it. However, to us it is an absolutely huge value. We are near a large airport hub though ( Minneapolis ), and don't mind traveling in the "main cabin". Delta's "main cabin" is actually pretty decent ( free drinks don't hurt...😁). We are also pretty cheap...err..."frugal" and like to get the most bang for our travel buck. We only book the lower level "below the waterline" rooms on river cruises. The large cost to upgrade just isn't worth it to us. And on river cruises you are often docked side by side. Having your entire patio door looking into another room just doesn't for it for us either.

pghflyer Posted June 3 #1515 Share Posted June 3 The issue is nothing is ever really "free", they just hold or raise the cruise prices, or reduce / eliminate OBC, or don't offer drink package discounts, etc.........so if you happen to not want the "thing" they are using to support their price, you are actually paying more.

Well...as with anything, "it depends". The higher the price of the cruise, the lower the perceived value of the free airfare. For example, the lowest price I have seen on a river cruise lately is around $2200 or so per person. Sometimes even $2000 in rare cases. Free international airfare is a huge value in this case. As cruise prices rise ( often substantially ), free airfare is obviously less of a value. I think this might explain some of the discrepancy when folks debate the airfare topic. To each their own though. For us cheapskates, the free airfare truly is a great value. Edited June 3 by farmecologist

I totally agree, that's why I called "free" airfare "included." Viking doesn't do this out of a sense of generosity. I was trying to come to the defense of those opposed to it. I don't think they are being contentious. I think they are being honest that it doesn't work for them. No one is happy about paying extra for stuff they won't use. I'm happy that it does work for others. I can no longer sit without my legs elevated for a flight from the Southwest Coast of the US to Europe. If I could, or I were flying from farther east, included airfare might work for me, as it can have a lower overall cost than purchasing the cruise and economy airfare separately. Instead, I look for lower cruise and/or accommodation prices and points and miles deals when I can't find good cash deals for airfare. Different things work for different people.

Only you can decide if booking now and getting exactly what you want and paying full fare (especially since you need multiple rooms) is worth it. Again, I would wait at least a few days to see what they offer for June promotions. On thing to note, even if you have booked and THEN find a promotion code you can usually get it honored. Two key phrases are “can you revise my booking” and “we are thinking about canceling if we can’t apply the code”. These often allow the Viking Representative to make changes when they otherwise could not. Note that if you have used a Travel Agent or have assigned the booking to a Travel Agent, s/he will need to be on the call to give an OK. 3
