sptrout Posted July 6, 2022 #26 Share Posted July 6, 2022 Just an FYI - - If you have a Samsung Galaxy phone Samsung makes the "SmartTag & SmartTag+" devices that have capabilities similar to the Apple Tags. I do not have either at this time so "no dog in the hunt", but since we both have Samsung S21 Ultra Phones I will likely be buying the Samsung Tags. Both are available on Amazon or Samsung's website.

I have different initals and symbols engraved on each AirTag. We do, too. The ones for the dogs even have cute little doggie icons on them. I was just offerering information for the person who asked where else to buy them. Thanks for chiming in, I think the engraving information may be helpful to others. 3

PKB Posted July 6, 2022 #30 Share Posted July 6, 2022 I am seriously considering getting some of these airtags. Question: When the airtag picks up on a phone that is nearby - does it have to be an iphone, btw - and is there a notification on that phone that the airtag is using it? My understanding is yes it has to be an Apple Device. As another reader indicated they have a similar device that use android devices called Tile Mate. The devices do not give you any indication that your phone is passing on a digital location and it is not tied to your phone. If someone is trying to track you by putting one on you or your car after a short while of the same device being detected you will be notified that someone may be tracking you so you can search for it. sunpsyche Posted July 6, 2022 #32 Share Posted July 6, 2022 I’m planning on buying a set of 4. Is there any reason I’d need holders for them inside the suitcase? Will get some for putting on keyrings.
josh1324342 Posted July 6, 2022 #33 Share Posted July 6, 2022 I'll add another vote for airtags as a baggage tracker. We were recently in the UAE and when we arrived none of our bags showed up. We were able to see where they were and eventually had to pick the last one up at the Abu Dhabi airport since the airline never delivered it for unknown reasons. We knew right where it was and saw that it had been sitting at the airport all day and they never picked it up to deliver it. It only took 3 days, but we ended up with all of our luggage eventually. The airtags will only ping off of Apple devices, so they definitely work better in countries/areas with a high amount of Apple phones.

I just have my key ring attached to strap inside but could also just slip it into a pocket. I just prefer not to have it visible.

ohiojohn Posted July 7, 2022 #36 Share Posted July 7, 2022 Thanks to this thread, I found a lot of good info about the AirTags. I will use them for an upcoming cruise, and when not cruising I have some ideas for their use. I mentioned the purchase to my son and he mentioned he has one attached to his TV remote control. I ordered 4 before noon and got them today by 8pm, gotta love Amazon.

No But... to do so on my android, I have to use a specific app that's intended to read airtags, and I need to run the app to find them. So it's as far from seamless as you can imagine without an iPhone.

Unless Google releases their own version that will work with their Find Device, you will always need to use a 3rd party app like Apple's Tracker Detect, Tile's app, or Samsung's app. There are lot more options out there most of which will work with iOS or Android. Make sure whichever you choose it conforms to Bluetooth 5.0 as the max. range is up to 800 ft. While Apple doesn't state what Bluetooth standard they support, speculation is that it is Bluetooth 5.0 because of range. I am referring to whatever smartphone is near the airtag when it is out in the big bad world, not the phone that is attempting to track it. Also, the phone that the airtag uses that is nearby - is there a notification on that phone? Edited July 7, 2022 by PKB

From Apple... How does it work? Your AirTag sends out a secure Bluetooth signal that can be detected by nearby devices in the Find My network. These devices send the location of your AirTag to iCloud — then you can go to the Find My app and see it on a map. The whole process is anonymous and encrypted to protect your privacy. And itʼs efficient, so thereʼs no need to worry about battery life or data usage.

ebockelman Posted July 7, 2022 #43 Share Posted July 7, 2022 1 hour ago, gerelmx said: Does the Airtags works with Iphone XS? Yes. They work better with the iPhone 11 or newer because those models have the Ultra Wideband chip for precision finding, but for basic tracking they will work with any model running iOS 14.5 or newer. Charles4515 Posted July 7, 2022 #44 Share Posted July 7, 2022 1 hour ago, gerelmx said: Does the Airtags works with Iphone XS? They will work but you won't have precision find. For example if you have an AirTag on your key ring and misplace your keys at home Find My will show it at home and you can beep the AirTag to help locate the keys. With iPhones 11 and later it has AR and will point exactly to the keys.

I don't think they would unless they are close to a metal object that is blocking it's signal. I've never tried mine in one of those metal suitcases but could be problematic. Rare Jim_Iain Posted July 7, 2022 #47 Share Posted July 7, 2022 I looked at my Amazon Order and have to make a correction. They do not come with the leather key rings they are an accessory i bought separately for 4 for $29.00
MamaFej Posted July 7, 2022 #48 Share Posted July 7, 2022 Those with non Apple phones might want to download the app that lets you know if an Air Tag is moving with you, even if you aren't interested in having them yourselves. It can let you know if someone has dropped one into your bag or attached one to your car. There have been quite a few news stories about this happening, especially to young women. They're terrific for many purposes, but can also be used for nefarious ones.

I do have one of the key ring holders but all my luggage and backpacks etc. all have some small pockets I can put them in so I don’t need any accessories for those. One in the car just sits in a center compartment. If I had a metal bag or bag without pockets would be the only reason I think to buy a luggage tag accessory. Rare NMTraveller Posted June 16 #50 Share Posted June 16 Apple Air Tags are the best. On my last trip, the airlines left one of my bags in Amsterdam and it did not make it to Bucharest. Once I landed I noticed that the bag was still in Amsterdam. After going to baggage check and verifying this, I was the first in line to report the missing bag. There were about 10 others behind me. I figure that it saved me about 45 minutes of standing in a long line while on vacation.
