chance of hurricane mid Sept 2023?

When I booked a Princess NYC to Quebec Canada / New England for mid Sept 2023 I didn't think at all about hurricanes.  But, I was just watching a cruise video about a couple on a current similar cruise who had a very bad night due to a recent hurricane.  What are the odds of one for this time of year and this itinerary?  I'm already planning to have insurance and will watch the weather so there's not much else to do, I'm just curious.  I know Aug - Sept is peak hurricane season but just didn't think about it being that far north, even though I've heard of hurricanes there before, just not as often as FL etc.

Hi, to be totally honest with you (and I live in a hurricane region) there is just no way to tell you now what is going to happen in next year's hurricane season. It is really impossible.  We are still in this year's season and it has been very slow (thankfully).  But to tell you now for next year? You are asking for something that no one can answer.

As for the time of year......back in 2012 it was October when Hurricane Sandy hit the Northeast.(NY and NJ).......so yes,  in Sept it can still occur.  The actual season goes from June 1-Dec 1.......(officially).

But I would not worry about a year in advance, that is for sure.

I think it's like a casino 50/50 chance. We are sailing this Friday and had the same think in mind. We even also are thinking about the things that are developing in the Caribbean now and if they will reach of affect us in the next two weeks, But we are seasoned with 30+ cruises and deal with it.

We are not letting it affect us. The Captain will make decisions and sail away from it or alter course.

We've done C/NE cruises a number of times, including in the Fall, and although we've had a bit of rain or fog a couple of times, we've never had any severe weather.  It would never even occur to me to consider that it might happen.

That said, as has been mentioned above, the nice thing about being on a ship, as compared to a hotel or resort, is that the ship can move to avoid a storm, and will do so if appropriate.

Oct 2022 turned out to be bad in terms of hurricanes in that area, so about a year after your original post. We went and did have some itinerary changes due to Fiona.

And now I'm who ones for the time frame you're asking about - Sept 16 - 29 2023 - and have noticed considerable cancellations happening for the 2nd week (9/23-29) but not the first week. Wonder if it could be weather related or is something else at play?

No we can't necessarily forecast and hurricanes can build quickly, but the Farmers Almanac is usually fairly accurate. Maybe I'll check.

Living in a hurricane zone - we tend to not travel during the month of September as that seems to be the peak - at least for here in the Gulf of Mexico. Last year, we did a New England/Canada cruise in mid September and missed two port on the 7 day cruise due to weather conditions.

In the end , it is just a crap shoot and luck. WE have sailed around or behind or in front of hurricanes in the past so just give it a go and go with your plans whatever they might be.

We were on the insignia 2019 and had to stay ahead of a hurricane and missed a port trying to get out of the atlantic ocean.  We are doing the same cruise sept 27 and hope for the best, weather wise.

I also have ginger candy - LHT28 are you on the Insignia?

We sailed on the QM2 last September/October to NE/Canada 14 days and only lost one Port called Sidney since the Hurricane hit the location several days before we would arrival.

That day was turned into a Day at Sea with a day loaded with activities.

No other disturbances altered the sailing and continued with the rest of the Ports of Call we expected.

Thank you all for continuing to answer my question from Sept 2022.  I had forgotten I asked it, but it does inform me as I choose between this cruise and an Alaska one I booked for August.  I still haven't decided, but I have until early May.

Hurricanes that far north are EXTREMELY rare.  Your worst case is likely to be a northeaster which will bring moderate seas for a short period of time.

We too were on board a NE/CANADA sailing this past September and lost 1 port visit that was damaged by hurricane. That produced an extra day at sea.

Also limited access to promenade deck for walking due to rain and wind.

QM2 took it extremely well with stable walking in the Queen. Really no rolling.

Actually, Hurricane Lee will be going BY New England Friday and Saturday.  It will not hit us and definitely not today.

All true.  I wouldn't want to be in Nova Scotia or New Brunswick the next couple days

When at PEI last week I rented a car and drove u to the park on the north shore.  The damage done to the coast by last year's hurricane was amazing.  Hopefully this one will be much less severe.

I wonder if Summit will stay another day in Quebec or try to ride it out on the St Lawrence?

According to the port schedule, they will be staying an extra day in Quebec, although they'll be moving berths to make way for the Hamburg at Wharf 22: https://www.portquebec.ca/en/cruises/vessel-schedules/cruise-ships-schedule

Still closer to town than where we were last week (Pier 30).  No shortage of complaints about the walking distance😂.
