Hi all!!

About to depart on my first ever cruise in 4 days time!!

Getting some clothes ready, and can't find my decent pair of shoes - I normally wear steel toe cap boots (at work), and black trainers on evenings and weekends.

The last time I wore shoes was to a relatives funeral.

Am I going to be frowned upon for wearing black trainers?

Are trainers classed as smart casual?

I'm wondering if to go shoe shopping in Southampton prior to departure!!

I wear trainers for smart casual - I have a variety of styles and colours. Plain black ones are ok.

If you're talking black trainers minus glaringly obvious, bright colour logos, flashes or flashing neon, you will be fine in them.   Plenty of passengers who are mobility restricted, chair users or have any other medical issues will be wearing whatever footwear they are most comfortable and safest wearing.   Definitely not a deal breaker.

Enjoy your first (of many) cruise.

As others have said, black trainers are absolutely fine for smart casual evenings. Obviously if you want to attend the main dining room or nice bars during formal nights, something more formal will be needed. Personally I only wear black shoes with a suit or dinner suit, but a lot of younger guys wear brown these days, which might give you a secondary use when going out at home?

Brown shoes with a black Dinner Suit? Should be a keelhauling offence imho...

Brown shoes fine with a blue suit/trousers but definitely not with black...

Stanley Holloway agrees, but it wouldn’t bother me one jot!

I agree with you but then we are of a ‘certain age’ and not ‘down with the kids’ 😂

I am 'down with the kids', it's the getting back up again that's the problem.

You’d get exhausted. It’s all the rage 😂

Like not wearing socks...

Note to self as grumpy old man - don't look at any young men's feet on a cruise...🤣

I’m 100% with you on that too 😂 Let’s hope we meet on another cruise. We can have a Grumpy Old Men session (in a nice bar) 😉

As for the skinny trousers that finish halfway down the calf - harrumph.

I understand checked suits with waistcoats are the in thing at present with the under 40's - they lok great with the brown shoes.

Arvia Celebration Night last night most people were dressed splendidly and in particular the younger folk had made a real effort with their children dressed in beautiful party dresses and suits.  Most pleasing.

We had a colourful group in saris but the standout moment for me were the two Japanese couples in full national dress with the ladies in astonishingly beautiful kimonos with hair pins around a foot long holding their hair up.

I still think it depends upon the colour of the suit. If it is black & grey check for instance, brown shoes are a no no...
