milolii Posted August 19, 2023 #26 Share Posted August 19, 2023 (edited) As others have stated, there will be a lot of rain. The system should be a tropical storm by the time it reaches California as the colder water “should knock the wind out of it” somewhat, pun intended. Flash flooding is at very high risk in the desert and areas down hill from the mountain ranges, especially areas with burn scars. In addition to the hazards of driving in the desert, CHP could very well close some of the mountain passes due to any of the reasons mentioned above. Agree, ships may stay offshore, although the storm is predicted to swing east into the desert and towards Nevada as she moves into California. San Diego, however, may not be as lucky. Edit: I see the OP friends/family are flying, but comments above might be helpful to others. Edited August 19, 2023 by milolii

They are currently returning from a Los Angeles-Hawaii roundtrip cruise. Obviously, everyone on that ship—especially, the ship’s command—is keeping an eye on this hurricane. They will be stopping at Ensenada—for PVSA compliance—but it will be a service stop, only. No passengers will be allowed off. As soon as paperwork is completed, they will head for Los Angeles. They will, in fact, arrive at berth in Los Angeles on Sunday and overnight there. So, to the OP, when you arrive at the port on Monday, your ship will be waiting for you. 😃 Figured that was what they were going to do.

I am "suggesting" that they should go Sunday. Tell them to shoot for Saturday. This is highly unusual. We don't get weather like this in So Cal. Sports Major League Baseball today restructured the weekend schedule for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Angels and the San Diego Padres, who all have home series Friday-Sunday. All originally scheduled Sunday games will now become the earlier games of split doubleheaders on Saturday. Per MLB: The San Diego Padres’ Sunday home game vs. the Arizona Diamondbacks has been rescheduled for a split doubleheader with starts of 12:10 p.m. PT and 5:40 p.m. PT on Saturday. The Los Angeles Angels’ Sunday home game vs. the Tampa Bay Rays has been rescheduled for a split doubleheader with starts of 1:07 p.m. PT and 6:07 p.m. PT on Saturday. The Los Angeles Dodgers’ Sunday home game vs. the Miami Marlins has been rescheduled for a split doubleheader with starts of noon PT and 6:10 p.m. PT on Saturday. For ticketholders, all three of Sunday’s rescheduled games will now become the early afternoon games of Saturday’s split doubleheader.
Rare travelin.sisters Posted August 19, 2023 #29 Share Posted August 19, 2023 no one can tell you now what the ship will do, the best you can get is what they hope to do if the storm continues as forecast...last March we were late boarding the Crown to Hawai'i because when she went into Ensenada just to drop off the paperwork for her foreign stop, the storm picked up & the weren't able to leave until almost midnight because of gale force winds... if Hilary does what they expect, then the ship should get here & you should leave on time with no problem, although as other posters have said, getting here may be a challenge...the captain, navigator & corporate will be in continual contact as they watch the storm to make sure they get the ship & the people here as safely & comfortably as possible but the plan will be fluid & could easily change quickly.

Rare stevenr597 Posted August 19, 2023 #35 Share Posted August 19, 2023 It will most likely be a rain event. The cool waters off the Pacific Coast should rapidly downgrade to a tropical Storm when it nears California.

A few years back in Aug, I was driving thru the desert on the way to Vegas from Los Angeles. Saw thunder and lighting. Then coming down the mountain , i saw a small brown trickle of water ( o how nice, a waterfall in the desert). Within 1 minute, trees were being washed down the mountain, deep brown rush water was filling the culvert channels, cars were moving over just incase of flooding. It was scary, but amazing to see in what is normally a vast dry area. I have also done that drive in November, and got SNOWED IN for a couple of hours on the freeway. Highway patrol was escorting folks out.

I've also seen how the same storms can screw up air traffic for days. I suspect the airlines are already being flooded with calls about changing flights. Driving remains an option, even if leaving on Saturday. The cruise lines aren't saying what will happen (yet), because they know predictions can change. Time will tell. Having lived in Florida for 28 years, we have learned that predicting the path, the severity, the rain amounts and the winds of a hurricane is not an exact science...not even close. We just prepare and hope for the best.

cruzsnooze Posted August 20, 2023 #48 Share Posted August 20, 2023 (edited) I drove home from Las Vegas today. There were a few short bursts of heavy rain but not enough to cause problems. Traffic was bit heavier then usual but road conditions were good. My concern is how things will fare tomorrow and Monday in LA with so much rain if it comes as predicted. Catalina is evacuating volenterrily right now so San Pedro won't have hotel rooms to anyone coming in early for a cruise that was postponed a day so look elsewhere if you need a room Sunday or Monday night.
