Dinner last night was at Pirates Landing.

That is actually how we discovered Elkin and the surrounding area. We were traveling north one year, looking for a place to eat, and it sounded good.

Their hush puppies are addictive.

Susan had the big shrimp dinner, and I had the smaller, Senior one.

Not bad for 9.99.  They haven’t raised prices yet.

I know that @Sea Dog Greg would love our hotel. The owner has about $250k in Christmas decorations.

Every floor has a tree at each end of the hall

I have already deviated from my day 2 schedule.  We decided to drive a little south to gas up at Sam’s Club. That way, we aren’t stretching it to make the next gas stop. Oh, and we waited in line at Starbucks.

According to Waze, we will be 5 minutes behind schedule.

How are you able to be so accurate.  Is it because you have done this drive so many times or is there a website you use to calculate the time.

I use the Waze app to map our stops, and it gives me the times.  Of course that can change with the time of day and traffic.  I find it hard to believe the 6 hours of drive time today, because that would mean averaging 74 mph.  I can assure you that Susan only drives the speed limit after her encounter with Georgia State patrol last year.

WOW! My kind of hotel. What was the name and where if I missed it? I would love to stay there during the holidays.

That is the Fairfield Inn on CC Camp Road in Elkin, NC.  Definitely one of the best hotels for Christmas decorations that we have stayed at.  We stay there every year, going down and back, just because of those decorations.

Following for sure.  Great pictures.

We've driven multiple times to NJ and once to Miami.   I prefer it over flying although we never stop specifically to see the sights.  We just stop for food and potty breaks.  I like your way better!

Wishing you safe travels.

One of the nice things about driving, is you get to see so many interesting places in this beautiful country.  A couple years ago, we made a slight diversion to Mt. Airy, which is about 20 minutes from our hotel.  If anyone remembers The Andy Griffith Show, Mt. Airy was near Mayberry.

Andy Griffith’s home place is here.

I will not say this happens often, but we ended up in the back of a police car.

It was a neat way to get a tour of the town. There are lots of things related to the tv series here.

Been meaning to do that tour, just never got around to it yet.

Did you pre book or just get lucky when you went there and they weren't booked for the time you were there?

How long was the tour?

Thanks Mark. I’ve added this to my notes for when we get to that area.

I completely understand.  As you've heard me say before on Dani's thread (several times), that's my most hated stretch of interstate highways.  There's possibly light at the end of the tunnel though.  Seems like they're doing some clearing along parts of I-95 in SC.  Maybe they're planning to add another lane???  One can hope.

When visiting Hilton Head last year, I flew into Savannah & took Uber back & forth to the airport. Both drivers hate that section of I-95 where it crosses over into SC so much that one of them wasn't even going to take my ride request at first but it was a slow day.  Ended up taking some interesting back roads thru the Low Country to avoid I-95 as much as possible.

Anyways, they did tell me there are plans to widen the highway but it's still in the planning stages and will take years to complete.

A buccaneer for pirate corn is pretty reasonable these days.

After awhile this dad joke will become apparent.  🤔
