Park 19 on the Sun Princess

Not sure if it’s being enforced, we didn’t personally try as only one of my 4 would be old enough. If we venture in, which we likely will over the next week or so, I’ll be sure to post about it.

If you do try, please report back on the volume of disapproving looks you get from the older crowd!

I've never seen this.  It's not hard to find cruises where guests 3 and 4 sail for free.  And even if hey don't, the cost of guests 3 and 4 is usually $999 or less.  I'm not sure what the cost is for long cruises (more than 14 days).  The longest cruise we ever booked is14 days and our third guest was originally $999 and then we re-fared to FREE.  On one week cruises, guest 3 has ranged from FREE to $800.  The only way that I could see two children each costing the same price as the adults is to book two cabins with one adult and one child in each cabin.  But that is a choice, not a requirement.

Unable to accept delivery of what’s already been delivered and installed 🙄

I know in the amusement industry attractions typically have to be certified by the manufacturer and a 3rd party before it's officially handed over to the amusement park for them to operate it. Just because something is delivered and installed, ownership and rights to operate aren't transferred until that certification is completed. If there is an issue with these activities that is preventing them from being certified then that is probably what the wording is referring to.

We're on the Sun next month.  My 2 kids are 12 and 14 and are pretty quiet as kids go. They cost us the same adult price as we paid for this cruise and the dome/sea view area being 16 plus has never been mentioned until recently. So I think Princess has a bit of a nerve if they try and enforce this on us!

It's unfortunate but it's the only refuge some of us have to get away from the kids, quiet or not.

They still have the main pool to go to and I doubt if they'll be disappointed.

Yes, we have 2 rooms, with one adult and one child in each. Logistically that's the only way that works for us.  So yes, that's our choice.  The point still stands though, they've paid the same, so should be able to go to the same places. Its not like the Sanctuary, where you pay extra to go there.

I get your point. Do Princess ships normally have an adults only area?

Agreed that it's not a major issue, as we still have the main pool area and the wake view pool. It would be nice though to visit the sea view area, as it looks relaxing.

Is the dome itself adults only too, during the day?

Yes.  The "Retreat" area on all of the Grand Class ships and all but one of the Royal Class ships.  It is a small pool and lounge area that is age restricted to adults (which I think is "Over 16").

I understand your frustration. If there was no age restriction on a venue when you booked, and one is now being imposed, you were sold a cruise experience that you now can no longer obtain and that isn't right.  The problem is that it is very difficult for a cruise line to make changes prospectively because cruises are sold so far out in advance.  Two years and sometimes more.  It would be impossible for Princess to say: "Starting in 2027, the area forward of the Dome will be age-restricted.  If you already booked a cruise on Sun Princess, you are not affected.   But for all bookings starting in 2027, fair notice has been provided."  Instead, all they can (or should) do is make an announcement that beginning 90 days from now, the change will take place, and as long as the change is 90 or more days in the future, people can cancel before final payment date.

And as we know, Princess haven't informed anyone about the new age policy for the Dome/sea view areas, or about the removal of the Park 19 completely, its all just word being passed around on forums and facebook!  If I didn't visit this forum, then I would turn up for my cruise, expecting to visit the Dome/sea view areas and also Park 19!  I pity guest services, who presumably will be getting visits and flack from cruise guests who don't know these things in advance.

It really is mind boggling.  They seem to think that press releases to travel agents equals notice to the whole world.  If only there was one, single place that the general public could go that was quick and easy to access where Princess could house this information.  Hmmmmm.

I was just on the Sun Princess for 14 days.  It was just the SeaView area that was restricted to 16+ during our cruise.  My children were welcome into the Dome during the day (before it closes in the afternoon for nighttime entertainment).  It's a shame about Park 19 not opening, but my kids all saw the metal slide and thought it was crazy that anyone would want to attempt them in the Mediterranean heat.  We still really enjoyed the hammocks and the open space below Park 19.  It was one of our favorite spots to read and relax (plus I can't count how many games of Connect 4 we played).  All 3 of my kids had a great time.

Was there a splash area open up there?

On the older Princess ships the small aft pool is usually adults only.

I think that's where people got the idea to make the Wake View Pool adults only.

@zyx2008 I think all of the pools on the Sun only have ladder entry - no gradual step entry pools - right?

So just how deep are these two pools that are available to children?

Are they all over the heads of children?

We only swam in the wake pool in the evening a couple of times.  That one is ladder entry and my kids (11, 14 and 16) had no problem standing/playing in the pool.  I didn't pay attention to the other pools.

I see that but I also see the advantage of having diverse offerings within a cruise portfolio. My parents prefer Princess over other lines while my family (me, my wife and kids) would rather do Carnival or Royal. That doesn't mean that we'd choose every Carnival or Royal ship over doing Princess though. They all have their pro's and con's. My parents were looking at booking the Sun next year and with the added activities we were looking to book with them. When they chose a different Princess sailing we asked out kids what they wanted to do and they said that they'd rather go on Carnival so we chose a Carnival cruise instead. The Sun Princess looked like an alternative product that kind of met in the middle of what we wanted and what my parents wanted and I liked the idea of that. Just because you're a Princess loyalist doesn't mean you have to like every Princess ship. There are certain Carnival or Royal ships that I wouldn't book either. The Sun I felt was going to be a good ship to bring in a wider range of customers and now it's not.

I get what you're saying. If we were taking our son and his family on a cruise we would likely do RCL for the reasons you say. But if it's just the wife and I, we prefer to go with as few children aboard as possible. That means sticking to smaller ships without the amusement park, traveling when the kiddies are in school, and so forth. Which usually means Princess for us, although we might be tempted to try Celebrity or a true all-adult line like Virgin Voyages.

I understand that Princess is trying to be all things to all different people, but if they're trying to be just another clone of Royal Caribbean or Carnival they will risk alienating their base clientele.

To those who say that there are all-adult areas available on these ships, I say that depends on how they are enforced. My experience, whether it's a minimal dress code in the MDR, addressing chair hogs, or making sure there are no kids in the all-adult pool areas, is that if the staff doesn't have the cajones to hold guests accountable, it won't matter. And I shouldn't have to pay extra for the experience.

Are you kidding? I remember a thread not so long ago about Alfredo's being included in a package upgrade and without notice they removed it irregardless of the fact that people paid for it when the bookings opened. There are dozens of bait and switch examples that have happened over the years on Cruise Critic on other lines as well.  There is an uproar on the Celebrity board now about the lounge chairs being removed from suite balconies. People booked suites thinking they would be provided with lounge chairs and just like that they have been replaced with two low back Ikea dinette chairs.

Kind of funny. All cruise lines have some adult only areas.

Plenty of other pool areas that are not adult only.

In theory. In reality, it's been my experience otherwise. And no, I'm not paying extra for the Sanctuary....

So basically your view is thst the rules do not matter and that you will ignore them if they let you get away with it.

I think you and @Esprit are misunderstanding where I'm coming from. I want those areas to be child-free, I want the rules enforced, see my earlier posts on this matter.

What I was saying is that, due to lack of enforcement by Princess personnel, these areas are not always adults-only.

Not to mention the high status gamblers on Celebrity that are upset they removed the drink package from the benefits.

Celebrity saw the outrage and rolled that back a little (for any sailings fully paid for by August 1st), but people are still extremely upset.

A bunch say they'll be going to Princess but I think once they sit in a smoke-filles casino, they'll be back to Celebrity.

Agreed.  I hung out at the retreat pool on one of the Royal class ships on two cruises and didn't realize it was supposed to be adults only until I found these boards.  No one was following that rule.  People of all ages were everywhere.

Some ships apparently do make more of an effort than others though.

Note: I am at least middle aged so I myself wasn't breaking any rules.

We are sailing in the Sanctuary on the Sun Princess over Thanksgiving and each of our two kids were an additional $2,500 ($5k combined, total cost of $20,400 for a 7-day sailing).

Other cruise lines do Kids Sail Free, but Princess isn't as liberal with those promotions.

Lol, wait until the gamblers realize the new sphere class doesn't even have a bar in the casino!!!
