Someone help me with regard tipping? Who do I tip and what amount?

Being from Ireland we don't have a tipping culture like Americans do. Quite simply nobody in Ireland (bar waiting staff) expects tips. As a result I don't know who I should tip and what amount. Can folk make suggestions.

We're just coming to the end of an incredible week in the Getaway which completely exceeded our expectations.

We're in the Haven so that might add to whom we need to tip.

As long as you have paid the auto-grats added by NCL (or had them included in booking), there's no need to tip anything additional to the room steward or wait staff. The only additional related to the Haven, I believe, is the butler and concierge, and recommended amounts vary widely. I'm sure someone else will pipe up with suggestions on an appropriate amount.

According to some here, everyone you see, at least $100 each.

According to others the auto grants are too much.

So your call.

Just leave the Auto Gratuities in place and make your life simple. No need to do anything else. If you use room service you might keep some $1 handy and give the delivery person $1 or $2. But your Auto Tips really take care of everything else.

PS if you are staying before or after the cruise and eat in a US restaurant (sit down w/menu & not fast food or pizza) you normally tip 15% unless the service is horrible. We tip on cruise ship & in restaurants, we rarely tip any where else.

If you leave the service charge in place, you need not tip anyone else, except for your Butler and Concierge.

It has already been sorted out for you by the included service charge.

Some of the answers here don't realize that neither the butler nor the concierge are included in the automatic DSC so do need to be tipped for service, especially since your week exceeded your expectations. Plan on giving them each a tip. The amount depends on how much you used them, and on your budget. Some people can afford to tip the Butler $100 or more for the week, some $35.

Some never use the Concierge so don't tip him/her at all. Some would tip anywhere from $25 to $100.

Since we don't know what each did for you, or what your finances are, it's hard to say. Also, even though your cabin steward is included in the DSC, if he served you above the ordinary you might tip him an extra $25 or more dollars, again depending on service and your budget.

I'd day 18% is more typical. Do you tip your hair dresser? Bartender? Cab driver? Pizza delivery? Valet? Bell boy?

Your "tips" will be added to your account...no worries! They take care of everyone who is supposed to be tipped, except for room service delivery....$2-5 is ample for the delivery person..in cash at time of delivery.

Point taken and Yes I do. You just forget as it's just something you do. But for a visitor the restaurant is what he will likely encounter and 15% is just fine.

I was asking a fellow US resident, who knows that those in tipped positions usually have a lower salary with the expectation that the difference will be made up with tips.

I consider my DH and I to be excellent tippers! So much so, that my DH will often say to me, "can I work for you"! With that being said, I do not agree with the "overall tipping" that auto goes to your account. We tip HEAVILY, to each and every person we are in contact with, and our room steward. And yes, we tip Pick-up orders, deliver orders,grocery store baggers and always very generous at restaurants. So consider what works best for you. You do not need validation from anyone on how you should specifically tip on the ship. This just "MY" opinion.

What about lack of validation? Can we enjoy that?

I'm so glad to not have cruised in the era of envelopes. Imagine, you spend 5 minutes of their day (which they could have spent sleeping, or having a non-work life), to tell them how FABULOUS they were.....and then they open the envelope and it contains less than they would have made if you had just left the Service Charge in place.

Imagine, how awesome that makes them feel.

Now, if you truly want them to have more - then leave the Service Charge in place, and give them extra....no envelope required.

Separately, to the person from Melbourne - of course you don't tip extra, everything already costs 3x the US price, because it is priced to include a full salary. In the US, things are not. In the US you can get a $30 haircut, which is not awful. In Melbourne, the same cut would be $65AUD.

I know....I just had one there, 3 weeks ago.

There are many who share in the DSC who you would never be in direct contact with in order to tip. Cooks and laundry for example. You might have some degree of contact with busboys and the people who clean the parts of the ship that aren't staterooms, but I'm betting that you don't tip all of them.

Serious Q...do you guys tip at dinner in specialty restaurants? That's one that I am always a little befuddled by when on the boat.

I'll often tip a dollar when grabbing drinks as I think it makes them even more responsive. I obviously tip dealers in the casino. I always let steward know my nephew loves the towel animals and because of that as well as a bit more mess from him I usually tip an extra $20-$40.
