Discuss Implementation of Smoking Policy

I remember the days of the "Smoking Sections" in restaurants which was a step forward. Otherwise, it was smoking anywhere. And now, it is no smoking at all, as well as at your job. Heck, anyone could smoke at work...

So, it is with optimism that we may someday enjoy no smoking on a cruise ship. Yes, there have been improvements, but the smoke knows no boundaries and does not remain in the designated smoking areas.

Definitely smoking in the Casino on the Majestic today.

When ships note they have "cigar *bars*" (like the Grand has "Snooker's Cigar Bar") does that mean they actually have a bar that serves liquor or just a lounge with a few seats for smokers?

Basically a lounge - but - they usually have a waiter who will get drinks for you (if you are patient) and will sell you cigars as well.

It depends on the ship. On Coral and Island there is a lounge area right across from Crooners that has a glass wall to the interior of the ship as well as windows all along the outer side. On ships like Star there is a bar that allows smoking of cigars and pipes. The cigar and pipe smokers tend to be unhappy about the fact that many cigarette smokers use the venue as well.

The Grand's Snookers is an actual bar with irregular hours, but is always open in the evenings and sea days, where smoking cigarettes and cigars is permitted whether the actual bar is open or not, hence the "lounge" designation.

Grand & Caribbean actually have/had bars. All others are actually lounges. Some ships are nicer than others.

On the grand, it was a full bar with a bartender...  Happy sailing!

Does it say that it is for Cigar and Pipe smokers only ?

No

As skynight said, Princess doesn't specifically exclude cigarette smoking in the venue but they do specifically restrict Cigar and Pipe smokers to that venue. They feel that cigarette smokers have other places to smoke and they like to "enjoy" their own specific types of smoke and don't want to be "afflicted" with second hand smoke from cigarettes. I can understand their point but, then again, it's the only indoor area with a bar that allows smoking at all. I'm just glad it's not my problem.

I love the smell of cigars.  It reminds me of my great Grandpep who always had a "stogie" in his lips (half way over on the right side of his mouth)  So a cigar smoker in the outdoor smoking area can sit by me anytime.  😉

I agree with you about cigar smoke the smell never bother me. But I can’t stand the smell of cigarette smoke. Go figure 😳. Outdoor cigar smoking is ok with me.

How is smoke in the casinos these days? Last time we sailed Princess, the casinos were smoking sections. Are they still or is it smoking only for people actively gambling?

There IS smoking in the (Grand Princess) casino.  What makes it worse is that passengers feel that it is a smoking lounge.  They come into the casino specifically to smoke, especially on rough sea days.  I did not see a sign restricting smoking in the casino.

I guess we will see in a month.  Between that and the reports of cigarette smells on aft balconies (where we will be,) it could turn into a Princess deal breaker.

We have a cruise booked for 2023 on Princess,  but, if next month is a smoke smell fest, we will go with another line. Norwegian Getaway is doing a similar trip to the Baltic.

As an ex-smoker, I can say with certainty that smokers have no idea how awful that smell is, until they quit smoking. It then becomes intolerable.

There are threads right now on the Princess page about current smoking issues. The casinos are smoking venues (for passengers) as well as the aft Promenade decks for staff. The aft areas are causing major issues for paying customers and not being handled well by Princess. I just recommended Princess to my Aunt and her friend and now there is smoking by our aft balconies.

This is a major issue at this time.

Today I found an update to the health safety FAQs for cruises from the US. Looking forward to smoke free casino on our 12/27 cruise.

UPDATED: What enhanced health protocols will you have in the Casino?

Our Casino will resume with enhanced and frequent sanitation of all high-touch surfaces, including table game positions, slot machines, and cashier areas. Smoking will not be permitted in the Casino.

Casino dealers will wear Personal Protective Equipment including face shields.
