with 2 days in Cabo, should I get a hotel room one night and just stay in Cabo to enjoy the nightlife and such? what will the cruise ship say about it? will they send a search party for me if I don't check in each night?

tips and suggestions are very welcome. as well as suggestions for a motel room

thx

I don't think the cruise line will be to keen on that, you may want to check with them regarding their policies of such requests. But, if you have already paid for the "floating hotel" why would you want to pay for another hotel? Unless you are very interested in the night life of Cabo which can be very lively especially during Spring Break times of year.

It doesn't happen too frequently but Cabo is a tender port and if the bay is too windy and the waves too choppy the port will be cancelled.

Even if you do get permission to stay off the ship overnight in a hotel -- I wouldn't risk it.

There have been a couple of times when we skipped the port because the winds were too high to drop anchor. If the winds would pick up late in the evening, the captain can make the decision to hoist the anchor and leave. And then you are stuck there.

I wouldn't, for the reasons mentioned above. Additionally, some countries have different immigration policies regarding people coming for a day visit compared to someone staying longer. I don't know if this is the case with Mexico or not, but I imagine the cruise line has to report to the local authorities those passengers who don't reboard the ship, and those authorities might want to know why. So that would be something I would investigate before just going ahead and doing it.

You need to request a "trip deviation" in advance from the cruise line. Leaving the ship early and returning needs to be approved by the cruise line. We have done this twice before, but always with approval in writing in advance from the cruise line.

When we did so, we needed to provide information on where we would be staying and contact information as part of the approval.

I've never heard about this in an overnight port.

In an overnight port our experience is someone can stay out as late as they want as long as they return to the ship in time. We're not talking about meeting a ship in another port. It's the same port.

Keith-- Cabo has been a two day stop for several years now on some Carnival itins. More so now since Mazatlan is no longer a stop.

Cabo is at the very tip of Baja California and is a tender port. Sometimes the currents are strong. Some ships upanchor and return the second day.

The tenders stop running about 5pm the first day, earlier the second.

One cruise we met a bunch of guys that spent the night in Cabo and met the ship in La Paz the next day.

Sadie, thank you. Yes I know that it is an overnight port.

My response was to the previous poster who said you had to get special permission before boarding the ship to stay in a hotel overnight because the person would not be returning to the ship the next day. My response is I've never heard that on any overnight we've ever had. Yes, if you want to stay in a hotel and will not return to the ship until another port you need permission. And I would certainly inform the ship in a port where these is an overnight. But permission is not needed at least in any place we have stayed.

I think it would just be a lot easier and less expensive to go "wherever" and enjoy the nightlife (clubs/shows/whatever) and just take a cab to/from the ship. As far as that "Ship deviation" that probably is required if you are getting off in one port, traveling by surface and rejoining the ship at the next t port, but if the ship is docked overnight at a specific port, no. What if you're a real party animal and stay out and end up at an "afterclub" and come staggering back to the ship at 6AM? How is that any different than getting off the afternoon before, checking in and staying at a hotel, and coming back to the ship in the early AM? Would you need a "ship deviation" for the 1st scenerio and not the 2nd? If you have to tender and don't dock, make sure you are absolutely positive of the tender schedule and they are running that 2nd day. Sometimes because of scheduling they stay anchored, but leave in wee hours. They call it "overnight", but there is no tender service after say, midnight-ish of the arrival day.

On CCL the ship sails after day 1, probably to make money on casino, and returns again the following morning. With or without an approved deviation. If conditions on day 2 prevent tendering, the OP would be left behind if overnighting at a hotel in Cabo. I don't recall RCI, HAL or Princess doing back to back calls at Cabo.

The last I knew, citizens from the US and Canada could be in Mexico for up to 72 hours without a Visa, but that is also a consideration if there is any chance you might not make it back to your ship. If you miss returning, you'll potentially need to purchase a permit to stay. The fees the ship pays to run tenders to the dock only cover you so much.

Definitely check in with customer services before you go, and again with guest services on board.

It's not an overnight port is what we are saying. It's 2 separate port calls on consecutive days. The ship doesn't stay there overnight, it sails and comes back the next day. Whether you need permission from Mexico or not is not something I am saying is for sure, just that it needs to be checked into, not just assumed you are fine.

Thanks for clarifying. It was not clear the first time.

So now that I understand this yes the original poster needs to clarify this with the cruise line before boarding the ship and then needs to confirm it on the ship and it really makes no sense because as mentioned due to weather the ship may not be able to return.

I am amazed that Carnival repeats this port two days in a row. I would either have another sea day or go somewhere else.

They started doing this a couple years ago when there was a problem with Mazatlan, and they decided to pull out and since they were in the middle of their season, decided to do the double Cabo days. I guess they decided since that this was more popular than going back to Mazatlan.

DCL did the same thing on their MR cruises. Eliminated Mazatlan and did 2 consecutive days in Cabo.

Feb we were on PCL Sapphire Princess they over nighted in Cabo and it was easy for those that wanted to stay over night (we didn't)..Unlike Carnival, the ship actually stayed anchored and didn't leave..Our tender's last trip was 11:00pm and then started up again at 6:30am the next morning...After many many years of sailing RCI's Mexican Riviera I missed Mazatlan but found this itinerary a chance to finally try PCL....Back to being loyal to royal....come back to the west coast RCI and offer us something....anything !!

i was wanting to stay in port in Cabo for the nightlife.. but if there isn't much going on mid week.. then there would be no reason really to stay on land overnight.

sounds like there is a good amount of gray area for doing this. and yes missing the ship or them not being able to tender the following day is a big concern.

Most likely we will not stay overnight in Cabo in the city and instead stay on the ship. seems so much easier. ;)

but how fun would it be to party like a rock star in Cabo? :p

why would you pay for another hotel on land when you have a perfectly good one floating in the water???? why would staying on the ship hinder your enjoying the cabo night life... ???? get your drinks. dance party have a great time and go back to the ship when you are ready... just like you would go back to your hotel you want to waste $$ on.... seems stupid to me...

Either the ships don't stay there late, as in the OP's case, or the tenders stop running at a certain time, like another post mentioned. To me, if someone wants to experience the

Cabo nightlife, they should just go there rather than cruise.
