E-mail back from Royal Caribbean about smoking policy

I emailed Royal Caribbean yesterday about their new balcony smoking policy informing them that I would no longer be cruising with them. That is my personal choice and I know there are those that will be happy about my decision not to cruise with them anymore. So no flame throwers please, this is just to inform you of their response.

They stated that although balconies would no longer be smoking friendly that they are "expanding" areas on open decks and other areas of the ship for smokers. I find it humorous that now one of the only places nonsmokers can go that is smoke free is their balcony. Looks like they turned the tables on everybody.

Oh boy - yet another smoking thread! Suggest the OP re-read the smoking policy per the link below. Not sure I see where the tables have turned on the non-smokers. More importantly, not sure why it should matter either way - the policy is what it is.

And a lot of outdoor space will still be smoke free. You do realize the vast majority of cruisers do not smoke, right?

BTW, I got the same response from my email telling them I supported the ban. Don't get too excited. It's a canned response.

Smokers seem to need to keep posting that they are leaving. I'm not sure exactly why since they don't seem interested in anyone's ideas except their own. To stay angry this long seems counter-productive.

I see it as their own choice and hope they enjoy the ship line they choose.

I think it's odd is all, that in banning smoking on balconies, they are adding more places for people to smoke. No it doesn't matter to me one way or another because I won't be there. Just wanted everyone to know what they can gripe and complain about now.

The press release from RCI stated this so you're not telling us anything new.

For someone who asked that no one flame you, you sure are doing a lot of it yourself with these smug responses.

Smoking areas on board are starting to remind me of leper colonies from the past. What? You smoke? You are now banned to the smoker colony.

Judging from your signature photo you seem to have a pretty bad habit yourself. Suppose they ban drinking alcohol. How would you feel about that. Because of the new drink packages there seemed to be more drunks on board than usual and they were pretty offensive to me. Lets ban all the alcoholics to a drunk tank so everyone else can enjoy their cruise. People who live in glass houses should not throw stones.

Just a wee bit defensive. Drinking on a cruise ship doesn't give others cancer. I love the extremes that smokers go to to try to defend their habit that is not only self-destructive but harmful to others around them. One or two drinks a day won't kill anyone. Cigarettes will. Most drinkers aren't addicted, but most smokers are.

There is so much talk about the "freedom" and "rights" that smokers have. Smoking isn't freedom. It's slavery.

They have added more outdoor areas but taken away balcony AND indoor smoking with the exception of the casino. So as a non smoker you can ignire fewer places and stay away from smoke if you desire.

I was on a cruise in June with the package in play and saw no more drunks than I have before, besides if someone has too many drinjs they can be cut off, taken to their cabin, or kicked off. Yes that is all in the policies as well. I am just hoping Royal enforces the smoking changes better than some of their other policies.

I think this change will be grezt for Royal.

Just figured I would save us some time. Add if you wish.

What about the drunks? Suppose they ban booze? That would teach ya.

Smoke on my balcony ruined every cruise I have ever been on. Or at least the ones I would have been on if my boss at Subway would pay me more.

That perfume you wear is much worse then the smoke.

You have BO problems.

I agree, e-cigs aren't just water vapor, but it's stupid to make me stand in a smoking area and smoke my e-cig. Trying to quit.

I used to smoke and have forgotten that it was wonderful.

Smokers still have rights! This ain't Russia!

Good riddance. I will take all of your bookings, even though I really ain't got a dime to spend.

Smokers are low-lifes. Go get a job holding a sign in a construction area - then you can smoke all day.

I'm gonna write Congress.

There are NO considerate smokers. Everywhere I go they blow it in my face. It makes it hard to tuck the dollar bills.

I'm going to HAL and smoke with the geezers.

Bottom line:

If you smoke, the new rule sucks.

If you have been a non-smoker all of your life, you probably did give a darn (but feel a little sorry for the smokers).

If you are an ex-smoker, you are happy.

They haven't banned smoking. You can still smoke on a Royal ship. Just in designated areas.

If you wish to ask a more appropriate "what if" question, it should be: "Suppose that they LIMIT where you can drink alcohol. How would you feel about that?" My answer would be to do what I currently do on land. Adapt. You can't drink alcohol every where you want. Many places limit it to bars or restaurants. They may not let you take it out to a patio or on the street. What do people do? They adapt to the rules. It wouldn't be any different on a ship if it ever got to that.

OP: I'm sure you'll also be able to adapt to the new smoking rules, just like you've done on land. :)

One common thread I've seen in smokers' comments regarding the new policy is a denial of the seriousness of breathing in second hand smoke. Which makes sense; there needs to be some level of denial of how truly horrible smoking is for you to continue smoking in the first place.

First of all you don't know anything about me. That pic was put up because of a Smuggling thread I was commenting on. I maybe have 4 drinks a day on any given cruise. And, the cruise lines aren't going to ban drinking due to the revenue. They don't make any money on cigarettes. And, it's funny how so many smokers make fun of the nonsmokers who talk about all the smoke around the ship by talking about all the drunks they run into on board. I have sailed 18 times and have never, NEVER run into a drunk personally who had any impact on my cruise. I've seen people from a distance who were obviously having a lot of fun due to some drinks but never anyone being obnoxious. Maybe you smokers should stay out of the bars so late at night and you wouldn't run into any drunks. And finally and most importantly, if I am sitting at a table next to you having ONE drink it has absolutely no impact on you but if you are smoking a cigarette at your table my life is impacted via the smoke I have to inhale and the smell of my clothes. So, let's not confuse the truth.

My post began as an informational post as to what an email said that I received on the smoking ban on balconies and that they were "expanding" the other areas on board where you could smoke. If I missed that announcement when it came out it was because I was on the Freedom of the Seas last week and in the Dr's office Monday battling a bad virus I picked up on the cruise.

My decision to no longer cruise with RC was already decided when I got home but the balcony ban just cemented it. These were two of many reasons. But as usual if anyone even mentions they smoke they become snails to pour salt on. Yes I did get defensive when attacked and called a leper and I'm sorry about that. I do not smoke inside and would never sit down with anyone at a table and smoke. That is why the balcony was important to me. My point about adding more spaces to smoke would only add more fuel to the fire because it would effect far more people. It just seems counterproductive to me as it will only cause more people to be bothered. That was my point plain and simple. I found that humorous. Go get your salt and get ready for the next smoking thread.

Just like the other 500 threads about smoking...

With all due respect, with over 1,000 posts and 6 years as a Cruise Critic member, you had to know that another smoking thread would get controversial fast.
