scotsman Posted October 19, 2013 #551 Share Posted October 19, 2013 I don't know how RCCL decides who to send emails to, but I have noted on my comment cards several times about feeling treated unfairly by the point system. I doubt if comments by solo cruisers were the reason for the change. I'm sure a lot of market analysis went into the decision. Baby boomers are especially subject to becoming single unexpectedly. And there are a lot of baby boomers. I'm sure this decision was driven by the need to maximize the bottom line. One more comment, I don't understand the negativity of some on this thread. Why should anyone else's point standing cause such concern? Is it jealousy, fear of change, a need to control? It's like going into a restaurant and asking for a table for one and having the hostess say, "just one?". Sorry, but us "just ones" are a growing number! Flame away!!!! Well said :) Due to bereavement I am cruising solo, I would much rather be cruising with my late partner and getting single points than paying for two and getting the extra points. I read a thread last night just before going out, and mentioned to my husband, I'll bet it's a full moon; lot's of snotty people on CC tonight. Seriously, some people need better training! Oh, I get that all the time as a solo cruiser. But the one I really dislike is, "just one, really?" But it was topped by the MTD guy who asked why I couldn't make friends to dine with.

But it was topped by the MTD guy who asked why I couldn't make friends to dine with. How about requesting the biggest table for regular late seating - then to arrive the 1st night to NO ONE else showing up? Can you say awkward? I felt like the loser guy in the pretty full dining room - sitting in the middle, at a table for 8, all by myself. I ended up drinking the whole bottle of wine that I planned on sharing. Needless to say, I had a great night anyway.

On a recent cruise, there was a couple sitting alone most nights at a table for ten. One night a second couple came to dinner, so four at a table for ten. That would have seemed awkward enough, but you story sounds more so.

That would have seemed awkward enough, but you story sounds more so. I made it worse, since I asked the servers to delay the tables dinner until someone else came. After a half an hour, we decided that they weren't coming. I don't really take the 1st night seriously anyway. It's more about meeting people and getting ready to have fun cruising. dacsmom Posted October 20, 2013 #567 Share Posted October 20, 2013 I have also had the waiters in the MDR not understand that I am a solo cruiser by choice. I sometimes cruise alone or with others but when I am alone I avoid the conversations that start out "What do you want to do, I don't care, what do you want to do." You wind up compromising and doing something no one really wanted to do. As solo cruisers we are able to do what we want, when we want. I have met some of the nicest people on ships, even if some cannot understand why I would ever want to vacation alone. Baby steps, first double points, next let's tackle that single supplement. squadron Posted October 20, 2013 #568 Share Posted October 20, 2013 Interesting how this is one time when RCI gave something more to a group without taking anything away from anyone and it still riles people up. I'm happy for the solo cruisers. Not much more to say about it I guess. Amazing all those people who think it is unfair for those booking solo (I usually have to pay the 200%) to get double points didn't ever comment how unfair it was for those solos to get only single points and pay as much as two people do (still the case!). Then - all the schemes to "beat the system" the complainers have come up with. I sail in an interior for what some couples pay for an OV or balcony . I'm eligible for the balcony discount but it is still too expensive for me.
BillB48 Posted October 20, 2013 #569 Share Posted October 20, 2013 Baby steps, first double points, next let's tackle that single supplement. You may not be able to eliminate the supplement but at 340 cruise points it drops to a 150% for most of the year... double points will make that goal easier!!:D

I ended up drinking the whole bottle of wine that I planned on sharing. Needless to say, I had a great night anyway. I am sorry you had this experience! I had a different experience on a TA cruise. I checked out my table assignment when I boarded and was at a table for 4. So I asked the MaitreD to change my table. (Understand this was a 14 night cruise.) He tried his best to make me happy. I was reassigned to a large table. 2 single guys about my age, 2 gay guys (who were a delight) and two couples. One couple, the wife tried to insist that everyone sit at the same spot every night. Second couple was a VERY elderly guy and his much younger wife. The two unattached guys were friends and one was a doctor (at least that's what he said). They kept trying to match me up with one of the single guys who was a cigarette addicted drunk. The supposed "doctor" latched onto to the soon to be a widow woman, and escorted them around Spain. It was a unique experience but I would have been happier to dine alone! Be careful what you wish for! I have done MTD ever since!
