HELP-Princess Oversold Offer

Can a Princess expert answer this one?

We have a South American Cruise booked for Feb/March. Princess is oversold. They have made the following offer. Rebook at no charge the cruise to a 2015 sailing and 1) be upgraded from a balcony to a mini suite and 2) the $4800. that we paid for the cruise will be given to us in the form of an on board credit that must be used on the rebooked cruise.

It seems to me that we would have a great deal of trouble using a $4800 on board credit, or getting value from it.

So I wonder if we should wait it out and see if the offer gets better or if the parameters of the offer will change to our benefit? We are ambivalent at this point but if the offer changed to a refund of our $4800. instead of an OBC or even a credit against a future cruise we would be more predisposed to accept. Air is booked but on points so minimal dollar loss there.

Any advice or experiences to share? Thanks.

You could always make a counter offer - ask for all or part of it as an FCC. Depends on how overbooked they area.

Personally, I'd be inclined to take it and book something else this year if you have the flexibility.

It's worth noting than OBC can be used to get chips from the casino and cashed in chips are refundable as cash end of trip.

It would be the flights that.would concern me. You cant change them yet and have no idea what they would cost as they havent been released. Do you lose the flight money all together if you cancel. Reading your posty again, i see you booked.them on points. Can you still do that in 2015.

I recently accepted a "move over" offer myself (Though I was not as high a category as you) I was told the $ refund would be given as OBC on the new cruise .... BUT the agent said it is REFUNDABLE OBC. I was given a specific phone number to call him back if I needed. I would call Princess back and ask again to clarify about the refundability of the OBC. I would have preferred it given as FCC (future cruise credit), but this can work for me.

PS, I was not given an option to "think about it" I had to say yes on the spot or he would go on to another passenger.

They will also usually cover the cost of redepositing your airline points.

Any moveover offer I've known gives you at least 24 hours.

A few years ago we got a call to change our cruise date to the week after ours was to leave and they would upgrade us to a full suite (from a mini) and refund half of our money. I recall that it was initially listed as OBC, but we didn't spend that much so when I checked out, I was given quite a wad of cash.

We just accepted a moveover offer to change to a cruise, same date, same cruise in 2015. We're being upgraded in room, and getting the price of the cruise in OBC. Any unused OBC will be reimbursed to us. Since our travel arrangements were made through Princess, they are cancelling everything and just re-doing it for the next cruise. Basically, we're getting a suite, and a free cruise for putting off our trip for a year. What's not to like????? Being retired and able to travel whenever makes a BIG difference.

I have called back on a few offers within hours and the offer was no longer available.

Other times, they have continued to contact my agent every day with a better offer for several days.

It all depends on how others respond.

Thanks all. I have instructed our TA to accept the offer conditional on any unused OBC being credited back to us at the end of the cruise.

We have an open schedule so this is not an issue. We already have a alternate last minute cruise in mind and fortunately our surrounding land reservations can be cancelled.

The key....being able to travel whenever. We aren't retired and vacation days are specific and not easily changed. Sounds like a winning deal if retired and can travel whenever!

Thanks for the comments.

We took the offer.

We had a con call with our TA and Princess this morning and accepted the offer. It includes selecting any 14 day cruise gratis, they will cover the costs of cancelling our air reward tickets, they will upgrade us to a mini suite, and they will refund any portion of the fare on our cancelled fare that is not used onboard the free fare.

We are very, very pleased.

I had a similar situation once. My three kids were asked to give up their mini suites and were upgraded to a suite and we were given $10,000 in OBC. We managed to blow $7,000 on a two week cruise and we received a check for the remaining about two weeks later. It was nice to not have to worry about spending on the cruise. We had a blast.
