This Thread Is To Be Used For All Discussions About HAL's On Board Smoking Policies

I'm guessing most people would not say anything. No one wants to be subjected to the possible anger of a smoker that is within their right to be smoking there.

Without a doubt if it's the policy of that line. But I'd say fair % of our recent cruises were on balconies where there was a no smoking policy. Even then, my lips are zipped. I've had a couple sailings where I was considering calling guest services and "ratting them out", but that's a little cold (either that, or it wasn't bad enough)!

I've never complained to smokers who've caused us issues on our balcony. So I'm guessing they think all is well too. I don't like to start problems with my neighbors, or really anyone for that matter.

Not saying that your partner has actually negatively impacted anyone - but it's likely you wouldn't know.

Totally agree with you if someone is smoking a couple a day their is not a reason to complain . If they chain smoke on the balcony it would not its more likely it would not make any difference ! HAL is the only one that can make it go away complaining to a chain smoking stranger will not !

You are a more passive person than I am. I don't like smoke in my personal space any more than I appreciate anybody urinating in the sea near me when I am swimming. Regardless of the legality, it is inconsiderate.

The difference though between smoke and urinating is that smoke is harmful and immediately so in the case of asthmatics.

Cheryl is an ex-smoker. She quit over 28 years ago as soon as she learned she was pregnant. She's less tolerant of smoke than I am (I grew up with my mother smoking), but I've heard that's often the case with ex-smokers!

I've never thought about it in quite those terms, but it's an excellent analogy.

Hi All

Can some one explain smoking on HAL to me,

I have no problem with folks smoking, so long as I do not smell

a single whiff of smoke.

yours Shogun

Good luck with that. You may be lucky and not have a smokers next to you if you have a balcony or you many not. On the eurodam smokers may smoke in the casino if playing or at the sea view bar.

If there were one, presumably no one would be forcing you to go. In my experience on Princess the cigar lounge is quite atmospherically isolated.

They were on HAL also. Humidors were at the back, starboard side of the Crow's Nest (furthest from the bar, dance floor and viewing windows) with the smoking area just outside on deck - very isolated from the normal flow of foot traffic.

The lounges themselves may be atmospherically isolated, but have you ever had the "pleasure" of sitting in the dining room, show lounge or piano bar next to someone who just walked out of one having smoked a cigar

On embarkation day,(October 25th) a letter from Captain Draper in the stateroom stated

"Thank you for sailing with us aboard ms Noordam.

We'd like to make you aware of a new Lounge on the ship that is available for guests.

The Oak Room is a Smoking and Cigar Lounge on deck 10 forward. While it is open 24 hours a day, full beverage service is available from 12 noon until 10pm daily. The Oak Room also has an enhanced ventilation system, comfortable leather seating and a large screen TV with a variety of channels, as well as wide array of cigars and cigarettes available for purchase.

For guests with verandah staterooms who smoke cigarettes, cigars or e-cigarettes, we encourage you to utilize the Oak Room for your smoking needs rather than your verandah.

Smoking is also permitted outside on the starboard side of Deck 9, adjacent to the Sea View Bar. There will also be a designated area for smoking in the Casino on certain nights of the cruise--this will be highlighted in the Today on Location program.

Thank you for choosing Holland America for your cruise vacation and we look forward to welcoming guests to the Oak Room throughout the voyage."

The Oak Room has always been there since the ship was built. It even had a door leading out to the deck.

But when the new cabins and Retreat were added, it was shut down. In fact when we sailed on her in the fall of 2014, it was kept locked. The only time it was open was for the Friends of Bill W and a couple of other times for very small parties.

Did they keep the artificial fireplace?
