290 Days......

Until I am exhaling aromatic billows of smoke from expensive cigars over every square (allowable) inch of the Koningsdam.

The term aromatic, however, is relative - but I can understand looking forward to something you find pleasurable.

If there were changes afoot in company policy, you'd think that HAL would implement them on the Koningsdam - so far, crickets...

Edit: We're on the sailing immediately following yours... close, but no cigar! ;)

Haha.

Well, hopefully they won't change their policy.

Maybe a non-smoking casino on the Eurodam is a test - and we can still hope for a balcony smoking ban on the big K! I would think if that was going to happen it would have been announced before bookings opened.

I was on the Zuiderdam from Jan. 4 - Jan. 15. I asked if they were going to have non-smoking nights in the casino. I was told they tried it over the Christmas/New Year's cruise but then went back to the regular smoking in the casino policy. There were no smoke-free nights on my cruise.

Yeah, I guess. I'd still rather they eliminate it from balconies instead though.

I agree. they can pollute the air in the casino all they like, but I prefer they not pollute the pristine sea air and my balcony space - but HAL doesn't make any money out of that. They need to entice more spenders into the casino because obviously they are not making enough with deterring the non-smokers.

We just have to be patient. Eventually it will happen and we will be able to enjoy smoke-free balconies.

I agree. I can easily bypass the casino but I pay dearly to enjoy my verandah and am reluctant to take the risk of paying 200% for my suite and not being able to use by verandah. Sailing as a solo now, the verandah means more to me than ever.

Here is HAL's current published smoking rules as part of their cruise contract with already booked guests. It seems that if they have made some recent significant changes, such as no casino smoking on the Eurodam, that would be reflected herein:

"Is Smoking Allowed On Board?

For the comfort of all of our guests, all staterooms (cabins), showrooms and most other indoor areas are designated non-smoking. While smoking is not permitted in staterooms, guests are allowed to smoke on stateroom verandahs. Smoking is also permitted on certain other designated, outside decks. The designated smoking areas for all ships are as follows unless otherwise noted:

Stateroom verandahs

Sea View Bar (not available on ms Rotterdam and ms Veendam)

Outside Decks

Sports Deck

Observation Deck (ms Prinsendam, ms Eurodam, ms Nieuw Amsterdam, ms Noordam, ms Oosterdam, ms Westerdam, and ms Zuiderdam only)

Casino

Active players only, when the casino is open

Designated slot machines only

Each sailing will offer one or more non-smoking nights depending upon the length of the voyage

Cigar and pipe smoking is not allowed anywhere inside the ship; it is only permitted on the outside decks where smoking is otherwise allowed and on stateroom verandahs. Electronic cigarettes are permitted in staterooms but not in other public areas of the ship other than on outside decks designated as smoking areas.

Any guest who smokes inside staterooms in violation of our policy will be charged a US$250 cleaning fee per day of violation.

Holland America Line reserves the right at any time to modify the smoking policy onboard or alter the locations where smoking is permissible."

I think change is coming on HAL. About time.

I just got off the NA on Sunday on the LRBC charter.

I was very upset that the few smokers onboard were not respectful of the majority. It only took 5 or 6 numbskulls to pollute the air at the pool deck. The smokers were supposed to stay on the port side of the pool deck. Some jerks smoked on the starboard side. Please bear in mind, during this cruise, the pool is covered over and becomes a dance floor. So there can easily be 1000 people (or more) out there for a show.

The disrespectful smokers upset dozens of people around them. Sadly, the president of the charter did nothing.

I spoke to a senior officer (Dutch, tall, salt & pepper hair, beard, late 50's, I don't recall his name), complaining about the lack if enforcement.

He told me it was up to the charter. However, the balcony smoking is HAL's policy.

I told him that I was upset that HAL still allows smoking on the balconies. He told me, without a doubt, that this will end. It will not be allowed on the Kongindam. He was pretty darn sure.

For those with upcoming cruises, ask a senior officer. Looks like there will be changes. Yay!

That sounds great but it's too late for the koningsdam inaugural cruises. Iirc the first cruise leaves mid April. Hal would have to give at least 90 days notice so it's too late for the first cruise. I do hope the end is near.

Why does HAL have to give 90 days notice if they change the smoking policy?

They can allow cancellations by smokers who don't approve the change if it is after final payment.

Would they though? Can you imagine the complaining if they didn't give plenty of notice. I wonder how long the notice was when other lines banned balcony smoking? I'll be shocked if Hal bans balcony smoking before the koningsdam hits the water with its first paying passanger.

They can change your complete itinerary with no notice and you think you'll get 3 months for smoking? They might...but there's nothing saying they have to. It's probably a good idea for diehard smokers to buy cancel for any reason insurance.

A change in itinerary is a little different than banning balcony smoking, don't you think? Most smokers will have a cow. Why in the world would they have to buy cancel for any reason? Hal will let them cancel. You should have seen the outcry when Hal changed their wine policy. I believe they tried to change it immediately and got killed on that decision. Smoking would be worse. I'll be delighted to be wrong, I should take some bets to finance my next cruise :D;). My guess is that there will be no change in 2016. Hal doesn't have the balls to do it.

Interesting. That's the second such post I have read from someone speaking to an officer. I do think the change is coming. It's just a question of when.

I just did a quick and dirty search of the smoking policy change on ncl. Looks like it was announced mid July and was effective November 1 making it about 3.5 months before or about 115 days.

I think other lines have done the same as a curtesy, but it's definitely not a requirement.

Fingers crossed for Konsingdam. It's the only thing holding us back from being super excited and hoping for a similar itinerary on another line.

I never said it was a requirement. Hal would certainly do it to try to keep the complaining to a minimum. I still stand by my comment there will be no changes in 2016. Hal, please make a liar out of me :D;).

I'm not holding my breath (unless someone is smoking around me:D) - you said last year it would be around June, 2015.
