CAPE LIBERTY 411 (and NYC too) Version 4!!

OK, I've read tons, but still haven't quite figured out my best options, so here goes. Am leaving Port Liberty on Sunday, April 29th. My daughter and I will be driving down from New Hampshire the day before (with a Friday overnight stop in Connecticut). Need a hotel for 2, shuttle to the port and parking during the cruise (coming back the following Sunday). Daughter has never been to NYC, so she figures we'll get to NJ early Saturday and can spend some time in NYC, so would need to figure out the best way to get there from the hotel. Anybody have a suggestion on the best options? I know about Trinity Reservations, but since I'm not familiar with the area, have no clue what may be convenient for the side trip to NY. I've also heard Embassy Suites is a good place to stay, but I believe you have to book them directly, no idea about their parking, and I think I read that the shuttle to the port is $20PP each way, so that's $80 just for transport.

I just came of the anthem a week ago. I met 2 couples who parked right at the pier in covered parking I believe and both were thrilled at the convenience. Public transportation isn't cheap around there so whatever you save in public transport getting to and fro could go toward parking right there. As for getting into NYC, we cane from the airport on the airport free train to Newark path then the path into Penn station NYC. Coming back to the port we took the path to Bayonne then light rail to 34th street where there happened to be a lyft waiting. We stayed in the Hampton inn 35th street and would HIGHLY recommend it. How bad would airport parking be overnight so you could actually stay in Manhattan (2 nights would be better than 1 so you could see more) and then go back to the airport and drive to port. Just throwing out another idea.

Kathy, we just disembarked from Anthem this morning, and stayed one night pre-cruise at the Embassy Suites,Newark Airport, which we found very comfortable and would recommend. Self-parking at the hotel is $20/night.

I’m confused as to why you need a shuttle to the port if you are driving. The garage right at the port can’t be beat for convenience; it’s $20 per day. Perhaps the easiest disembarkation we’ve ever had.

Enjoy your cruise!

Where are you stopping overnight in CT? What exactly do you want to see in Manhattan?

Parking at the port is $140 for a 7 day cruise, which can be a reasonable option depending on what sightseeing you want to do. It also has the advantage of being able to get on the road immediately when you disembark rather than waiting around for a shuttle.

Why don’t you just drive right down to a hotel close to the port? It’s maybe an hour more. You have a car so parking at liberty state park for the ferry to Statue of Liberty is a good option.

To answer the first, no to two nights. The Friday evening we are staying at Foxwoods casino in Connecticut (free room). Not flying in, so why would I want airport parking? Or are you saying to just use the airport parking as a staging area and then stay in Manhattan? I think Manhattan is more expensive than I want to spend, which is why I am looking at NJ hotels.

As far as paying to park at the pier, I figure $140 for parking there, plus the price of one night hotel, would be about equal to the price of say, Ramada Plaza stay/park/shuttle from trinity reservations. Guess I just can't figure out the best way to go.

As I said above, daughter wants to hit up Foxwoods on the way down. She also wants to mainly see Times Square area.

Got2Cruise, when you say drive an hour more, you mean rather than staying a night in Connecticut? For answer, see above, LOL! Our original plan was to drive straight through on Saturday, but she changed her mind.

With all of that, I still can't decide on the pier parking, or the hotel parking. I checked the price of Embassy Suites in Elizabeth through hotels.com, with no parking/shuttle and it was over $200 for one night. Add in $140 for pier parking, and I am way over the Ramada Plaza all inclusive price.

Foxwoods is about 3 hours from the Newark area.

So Friday you drive to Foxwoods, enjoy the casino, and spend the night in that area. Saturday morning you drive to exit 15X Secaucus Junction (MUST follow the Lincoln Tunnel signs on the Turnpike South from I80), pay $12 to park, and take NJ Transit to New York Penn Station for $4.25/pp each way. When you pick up your car, you drive to the Ramada to take advantage of the park, sleep, cruise package for $213 tax included.

There's really no point to going to the Ramada first. It will take you 1+ hours each way to take the hotel shuttle, Airtrain, and NJ Transit to NY Penn Station for $13/pp each way. The train ride from Secaucus Junction is about 15 minutes with 4 trains per hour.

Thanks. The only thing I wonder about is the safety of parking there in Secaucus with all our luggage in the car - no trunk, it is an SUV type vehicle. And if we take that exit 15X, where exactly is the parking place? Right off the exit?

Secaucus Junction is a big train station in the Meadowlands with a huge amount of parking. https://www.google.com/maps/place/Edison+ParkFast,+675+New+County+Rd,+Secaucus,+NJ+07094/@40.7620422,-74.0755085,18z/data=!3m1!1e3!4m2!3m1!1s0x89c2570172a1dd31:0x1098187985f936df?hl=en-us&gl=us

You'd have to google the precise directions. Exit 15X was created to provide easier access to the station area.

Both the train station and parking have many security cameras.

Dial7 at $120 sounds about right for JFK to EWR.

What is your base price for the Newark Airport Hilton? Are you 2 people? What size bed did you book? Where do you plan to eat dinner? The Hilton is fine, but there could be other options that offer food choice and shuttle transportation.

Thanks for the quick response, we got an offer at £80 equivalent to around $109 for room with 2 double beds, as for eating, probably will only want a snack so thought we would see what the hotel has to offer.

You might want to check out Embassy Suites on International Blvd (another Hilton property) For $20/pp you can get Port shuttle transportation. They have free breakfast. It's very popular with cruisers and is also the newest hotel at EWR.

Just flagging that, as I noted in my post above (3529), we just stayed at this Embassy Suites and it was an excellent choice. Very comfortable room, friendly staff, and, yes, breakfast. We were driving to the port, and it was convenient for that the next morning as well, but they do have a shuttle as Carol has noted.

I'm back again with another question. The flight out of EWR is about $110 more than the flight from LGA. With that being said, do you think it's worth it to use LGA? Also, (sorry if this has already been answered) how much would a taxi/transfer/Uber be from Cape Liberty to LGA? I've seen quite expensive prices and I wasn't sure if those were correct. Thank you for any help!

Along with my question, I just saw a page on the NYC Airporter which says it would be $18 from Cape Liberty to LGA. Is this known to be safe and reliable?

You may have misread something. NYC Airporter doesn't offer service from Cape Liberty to LGA, and if they did it would be more expensive than $18.

Their closest service to Cape Liberty is from from EWR to LGA, which requires a change of buses at Port Authority. That costs $29 per person, plus you would have to pay for transportation from Cape Liberty to EWR.

Figure on $100 -$125 including fare, tolls and tip for a car service such Dial & or Carmel Limo to travel from Cape Liberty to LGA. Uber would likely be cheaper for UberX or UberXL.

Another parking question:

It's been a few years since we've cruised from Cape Liberty. Last time, we parked in a fenced, open area right near the ship. Is that still an option?

Thanks!

That parking area is still there, but it may not be an easy option until the parking garage is full. The garage automatically dispenses a parking ticket that you put in a machine to pay when you get back to get a receipt to open the exit gate. I don't know exactly how they handle the open lot parking now. Last time I used it they had someone collecting payment on entry. There must be some plan for the open lot because oversized vehicles (i.e. RV's) have to park there.

Why wouldn't you want to use the garage?

Hey there....we are cruising out of Cape Liberty in May. We are driving from Michigan and will arrive at the port the day of departure. Looking for parking information and also the possibility of parking at a hotel and staying post cruise. Does anyone know if that is possible?

Another option was to spend the night in New York City post cruise but with never having been to New York it is so difficult to make a decision as to where to stay.

We have heard that you can stay in New Jersey and then take Amtrak into Penn Station and then get the subway for just about anywhere you would like to go.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.....

Thanks so much for your help.

Wasn't sure how close the garage was to the ship. I did see on this thread that the machine doesn't accept $100 bills. Can you pay by credit card? We paid an attendant (via credit card) upon entering the lot. It was easy. Using a garage minimizes any concern for snow! That's nice.
