CRUISEFAN0001 Posted July 8, 2015 #51 Share Posted July 8, 2015 We had to giggle a bit at the original announcement. First of all...the little 710-passenger vessel being used by Carnival is smaller than 2 lifeboats on Allure/Oasis. Second, Cuba is like a 1950's/1960's time capsule and questionable for many a destination for a cruise. Some may want to go...but others likely not. They hype exponentially exceeds the actual event. monctonguy Posted July 8, 2015 #52 Share Posted July 8, 2015 And for those that have not been to Cuba for a vacation...please look into it before you book it...as it is pretty much nothing like the areas of the Caribbean you are used to staying at for an AI resort. I have been there many times and can vouch for it personally. I think it will be many years before Cuba could accommodate a cruise ship and thousands of guests flooding their beaches and restaurants each day. And if the price is anywhere close to $3000/person, don't even think about it! I usually pay less than $800USD for a week of hotels, food, drinks and flights there! perditax Posted July 8, 2015 #53 Share Posted July 8, 2015 I'll just say that I work with a lot of millennials and I think there's a chance some of you may be underestimating the appeal/interest level of Cuba to younger folks.

I think the interest transcends age. I am not a millennial and grew up when Cubans were fleeing Cuba to settle in the US. Our synagogue was a magnet to them, since our congregants spoke Ladino and those that were Jewish found a commonality of language. So I am curious as to what they left behind....realizing that lots has changed from 50 years ago. I can't imaging leaving behind all you know for a world you know nothing about....but my relatives did it during the Spanish Inquisition.
Rare LMaxwell Posted July 8, 2015 #55 Share Posted July 8, 2015 Fathom pricing and structure does not fit for our family. Not that I am against a hands on experience, but it is pricy and not really practical with a baby. That said I'm hoping that in the next 3 - 5 years cruising from South Florida to Cuba will become a normalized operation. I would like to get there before American cruise guests are herded through compounds to eat Nathan's hot dogs or Dairy Queen.

Aquahound Posted July 8, 2015 #57 Share Posted July 8, 2015 Wonder when RCCL will send a ship to Cuba? The Majesty of the seas would make a good fit to cruise to Cuba it would fit well into the country. But they screwed up by putting her in PC. No, a 2800 passenger ship would not be a good fit for a humanitarian/volunteerism cruise to Cuba. In fact, I'll be surprised if Fathom can sustain 710 passengers per week with a cost starting at $3000.
Big_G Posted July 8, 2015 #58 Share Posted July 8, 2015 They hype exponentially exceeds the actual event. How do you know:confused: I tend to agree with CRUISEFAN0001. It may just be a gem to visit but you're not going there on a typical vacation. I think this is just a Carnival marketing strategy to be called the first. Look at the chart since they announced. Aquahound is right, they'll have a tough time sustaining this itinerary with all the restrictions and the high pricing.
boscobeans Posted July 8, 2015 #59 Share Posted July 8, 2015 I hope they announce soon. If not, I plan on booking Carnival (gasp!) to go to Cuba before it's ruined by tourists. I took a look on youtube at a video of the MV Adonia which will be the ship for the Cuba cruises. Very proper décor, no casino but it looks top of the line very, very classy. Also very expensive. bosco

besberry Posted July 8, 2015 #61 Share Posted July 8, 2015 I hope they announce soon. If not, I plan on booking Carnival (gasp!) to go to Cuba before it's ruined by tourists. There are lots of tourists there already, Europeans, Canadians, South Americans. The only people not there as tourists are Americans. Virgin Atlantic fly there from the UK and that'll be a plane full of tourists each week! There are many Spanish hotel chains represented there too. Yep, Cuba's full of tourists, just not American ones.
