Kiwi Kruzer Posted March 21, 2016 Author #180 Share Posted March 21, 2016 Update . Postal voting closes on Thurs. (24 March) . For votes to be delivered in time they needed to posted yesterday(Mon) in order to arrive on time. Anyone who has not posted back their papers can drop their completed forms into any Post Office. Initial polls are indicating an overwhelming vote for retention of the present flag . So now we wait for Thurs evening ..:D

Waihekean Posted March 22, 2016 #184 Share Posted March 22, 2016 That's a shame!! Not really. At least we get to keep our souvereignty! Then will be not so vulnerable to the new Corporate powers to come with TPP. This according to DH, who has been following the issue from day 1 and before most people were aware of this. At first I thought too, that it was just a new design for the flag, but as a Country we loose a lot of rights when this souvereignty is gone. That's why Key is so keen on changing it.
GUT2407 Posted March 22, 2016 #185 Share Posted March 22, 2016 Not sure I'd say a shame, but not a surprise either. There would be a lot of peopl who liked one of the other options but not the one that made the cut, and a lot of "traditionalists" who didn't want to change. Basically the same as damaged the republican referendum here. A lot of Monarchists plus a lot of Republicans who didn't like the model put up equals defeat. Kiwi Kruzer Posted March 22, 2016 Author #186 Share Posted March 22, 2016 Little bit different in NZ. We will never be a Republic as rights and entitlements granted by the Crown under the Treaty of Waitangi , would be lost.

Some didn't want change others didn't like the option they were given.

We will never be a Republic as rights and entitlements granted by the Crown under the Treaty of Waitangi , would be lost. It is also another reason why NZ will never become part of Australia (or New Zestralia. :p). Edited March 22, 2016 by MicCanberra

Rare TLCOhio Posted March 24, 2016 #191 Share Posted March 24, 2016 Results are in..43.2% in favour of new flag 56.6% in favour of retaining present flag From the New York Times this morning, they have this headline: "New Zealand, Unmoved by Bionic Kiwi and Starry-Eyed Sheep, Keeps Its Flag". Here are their story reporting/highlights: "The judges weighed 10,292 options — including a flightless kiwi bird firing lasers from its eyes — and the country spent two years thinking about it. But in the end, New Zealanders chose decisively to keep their century-old flag, a blue ensign with Britain’s Union Jack in the upper left corner and the four stars of the Southern Cross in red on the right. Preliminary results of a nationwide postal vote, which pitted the incumbent against the final challenger — a flag known as the Silver Fern (Black, White and Blue) — showed on Thursday that 56.6 percent had voted to keep the existing flag flying, despite the assertion by Prime Minister John Key that it symbolized a colonial era whose time had passed." Interesting situation, questions and background. Full story at: http://www.nytimes.com/2016/03/25/world/asia/new-zealand-flag-vote.html THANKS! Enjoy! Rare lyndarra Posted March 25, 2016 #193 Share Posted March 25, 2016 Makes you wonder what percentage of those who voted against change would have liked a change of flag but not the one that was put up.

That is often a problem when people are agitating for change, they can't agree what they want to change to, and thus nothing happens.
Pushka Posted March 25, 2016 #195 Share Posted March 25, 2016 Makes you wonder what percentage of those who voted against change would have liked a change of flag but not the one that was put up. Its a clever way to ensure the status quo. As soon as you 'attach' something to the question (ie Do you want to change the Flag?) it is doomed to fail. As soon as you 'attach' something to the question (ie Do you want to change the Flag?) it is doomed to fail. It's fair to know what you're changing to. I've also seen the situation where people just aren't happy with something... but they get blind sided by the new solution as well and aren't happy with that either. GUT2407 Posted March 25, 2016 #197 Share Posted March 25, 2016 (edited) And if you said, do you want a change planning to then (if majority wanted a change) say well to which one of these options, I suspect the "Do you want a change" vote woul be n danger because many would want to know "Change to what alternative", this is always an issue when it's not just a choice of two options. Appreciate this wise, above comment for how many people will be "itching" for a change!! BUT, when they see exactly where and how those changes might take them, they back off quickly. It is much easier to complain about certain current events, situations. Coming up with an alternative that most support will be more difficult. THANKS! Enjoy!
