Self Service laundry on Eclipse

I can never understand why some people chose a cruise line that has no self service laundry and then complain incessantly about not having it. That is about as ridiculous as choosing to dine at a nice French restaurant and complaining that they don't serve Italian food. If you want Italian food, go to an Italian restaurant! If you want self service laundry, go to a cruise line that has self service laundry! Wishing, wanting, complaining, grousing, bitching, whining - all because someone can't make proper choices.

Some people are never happy. They thrive on finding something to complain about, no matter how good they have it. Quite laughable, actually. It's about as dumb as me coming on here and complaining that Celebrity should have surf riders and water slides because that's what I like. "Why don't they install them?" and "If you don't like them, you don't have to use them if you don't want to".

In other words, the 'all about ME ME ME' approach to life!

BTW: I dress pretty nice - at least according to my lovely husband. And I have never had a single item lost or damaged when sent out for cleaning. But, I don't bring items that are so fragile that they can be easily damaged. That is not very smart to do when traveling on vacation.

Why doesn't Celebrity have Chiropractors?

We have taken some very long cruises, and we do take advantage of laundry & dry cleaning services. Have never had anything ruined. In fact, have had some things improved. Whatever they use to remove stains is light years ahead of Clorox.

We have also used the self-service laundries when available. We have seen yelling, name calling, pushing & shoving, people throwing other people's laundry on the floor in anger ... machines that break down, machines that eat your quarters ...

Just sayin' ... be careful what you wish for.

Yes, agreed. Once on a Princess cruise I ran a load of laundry - sadly several of our items were ruined as I suspect the passenger before me had run a bleach load... :(:(:(

Have never used a machine that wasn't my own since. :o

Slacks, pants with seams come back shinier after pressing.

On long back to back cruises my pants not only come back with "railroad tracks" but with the entire switching yard.

For some reason they just do not seem to be able to put the seam in the same place every time.

Creases are pressed into the wrong places when they flat iron the item on those big pressing machines.

Arno, we also used to have that problem until other cruise passengers told us the solution.

We bring along only permanent press slacks that need no ironing,

(except for dress pants that we send out to be dry cleaned).

In the space at the right side of the laundry form, we write:

Please wash and tumble dry only.

Do not machine press. Do not iron.

(We check to make sure the instructions are clear on all the copies of the laundry form.)

This works well most of the time with no problem.

Slacks come back folded, or sometimes on hangers.

If folded, we hang them up in the closet and any folds quickly drop right out.

But occasionally they may ignore the instructions and press creases into the wrong places anyway.

If that should happen, just call housekeeping (or even guest relations) and they will send a housekeeper to your cabin.

If you are in a suite, your butler will take care of it.

All you need to do is show the housekeeper (or butler) the problem, together with the order form that has the clear written instructions.

The housekeeper then takes the pants away, has them pressed correctly with the crease in the right place, and returned to you on a hanger, at no charge.

The key to having them re-done properly with no hassle is to point out the instructions that were ignored, clear and prominent right on the laundry form.

LOL "sturdier clothing" - you must be a guy! I'm not talking about dainties here but then there was the time when the Butler - thinking to surprise us, sent out all of our dirty clothes as a treat - no cost. Except that he took every bra in a storage cube that I had brought with me and yes they were RUINED beyond wearing. Did I report that - no, because I just couldn't break his heart, he thought he did us a big favor. So I sucked the cost of that ooops up.

However even my "sturdier" every day clothing never see a dryer unless on a very light setting - or they shrink. I'll admit that I shop as some nicer stores so my clothes probably cost more than some peoples cruise. My jeans get dry cleaned. All I'm saying it it wouldn't hurt for X to have a laundry room where those of us that care about their clothing could wash it ourselves. And no I'm not holding my breath for it to come about but I'm pretty sick of those that are so judgmental. If there was a laundry - nobody would force you to use it.

Thank you for this info. I am leaving for a month next week on a b2b on Solstice and am like you and I take nice items as well as sturdier. I wash many of my items on delicate at home and low dry or hang to dry. I understand your dilemma and have overpacked because I would be quite upset if my costly clothing was ruined.

I do not find it laughable. I (and a few others) mentioned it would be helpful to have self serve facilities but nowhere did I complain, grouse or bitch. I love Celebrity and certainly would not chose my cruise or cruise line by whether such facilities were available. I get by the same as everyone else and enjoy my cruise :)

I have chose other cruise lines over Celebrity and Royal Caribbean for longer cruises if everything else was about equal like itinerary, price, etc. because of the self serve laundries. I have free laundry on Celebrity but it is worthless because of the way they treat my shirts and pants. Two shirts on different cruises came back ruined and they were normal cotton shirts. Princess is a fine cruise line and Cunard also has self serve laundrys.

after 15 cruises on X we have never had a problem with the laundry, always fine. One cruise we were walking through the casino, an intoxicated guy walked into me spilling red wine all over a nice dress shirt of mine. I went back to the cabin, our girl saw me and said give me that shirt, I thought it was a gonner. It came back spotless.

On top of that is people who complain about the cost of the laundry services, after paying thousands for their cruise. Fifty bucks to have all your laundry done is nothing compared to the cost of the trip itself.

We leave today on a 37 day trip, each with a 24" suitcase, that's it. So lots of laundry will have to be done, and those coupons sure will come in handy!

Ouch! Some of the bra's my wife has purchased cost more than the blouse that she wears over them. Much less expensive to be a guy. It's cheaper to replace a package of Hane's tee shirts and the one's at Walmart are just as good as the one's at Macy's. I have to say that we pack very differently when we sail on Celebrity as compared to sailing on Princess who have self service laundry. We pack more synthetics that can be washed out and hung to dry and if something gets ruined in the laundry it's not a big deal.

I have had to have my two pair white capris repressed when they were returned with no crease...well they pressed them with the seams acting as the crease. I just showed them to the housekeeper, who understood the mistake and she took them with the verbal directions to the laundry. OR she might have done them, I don't know. But they were perfect when I got them back.

Not sure if my pants shrink or I GROW over the cruising days.:D

And nowhere in your post do you address the loss of revenue from all those eliminated double occupancy cabins and their occupants. Sure, the quarters might cover the cost of acquiring and maintaining the equipment, but the loss of cabin revenue would be much, much more than that. Seems like an easy decision to me - "We have been getting by without offering these facilities for 25 years and we are doing quite well profit wise. There is no logical reason to start now."

You have to think outside of the box. Get rid of the photo gallery and stick a Laundry Bar there! :D

Wow  Let me just set straight a few things - I'm not leaving Celebrity because they do not have self serve laundry - but if they did have it would make Celebrity pretty near perfect in my eyes. It is my one desire and no - as I said I'm not holding my breath. It is the anti-laundry folks who really get their panties in a wedge over this. :p

Sloopsailer - I never implied your wife dresses like a lumberjack although now that you mention it - I guess in my mind that would be "sturdier" clothes and you were the one that used "sturdier". As far as my statement about the cost of my clothes - I'm sorry you took that as bragging - I'm just stating a fact and I'm sure that I'm not alone - stroll through Saks sometime and have a look.

Clothing is not a priority to some people and to others it is - it doesn't make one person better than any other, perhaps your priority is your boat or your car or some other hobby. I happen to enjoy nice clothing and I cannot afford to have Celebrity wash and dry them in hot water. I've stated before that we have had good luck with the dry cleaning for my husband but I'd never send an evening gown there.

So I'll just say that while I do not believe X will ever put any laundry facilities on their ships - I sure wish they would. Not because I'm too cheap to use X's service - which in threads past has been an accusation but because they discolor and shrink my items. Sending them back a wrinkled mess.

Everyone needs to take a breath - we are talking about laundry for crying out loud. My opinion and your opinion don't need to match. :)

No, it was bragging. Your claim that you spend more on clothes than some people do on cruises has nothing to do with self serve laundry. It has everything to do with impressing us. If I were to say I am better looking than most people who take cruises, would you just accept that as fact and not as bragging? No? I didn't think so. If I were to say I am smarter than most people who take cruises, would that be accepted as fact? Again, no you wouldn't. (And you might be right! After all, I am wasting time on this thread, aren't I?! ;) )

Telling people that you have or do something better than they do is bragging. It may be a fact, but telling us about it is still bragging.

And BTW, I must also dress like a lumberjack in your opinion. I bring "sturdier" clothing on my vacations, and leave the delicate items for wear - and cleaning - at home. I have zero interest in wearing my "more-expensive-than-other-people's-cruise" clothing where I have to constantly be worried with how they will be cleaned. My vacation time is for fun, not wasting it in a laundry room because my clothes are too fragile for anyone else to handle.

Oh PTMary - well that is your opinion and you are certainly entitled to it. My clothing isn't meant to impress you - but how kind of you though to think so - it is to please myself. When I'm on vacation - a time to relax and have fun - I enjoy looking my very best for my own enjoyment, your milage may differ.

Like I said it is the "anti-laundry" people that get their undies in a wedge over this issue. My statements stand on their own.

on cruise critic....yes I did read it on these boards.....

Fortunately Cruise Critic has a self correcting feature. When someone provides incorrect information it is corrected by more experienced and knowledgable cruisers.

Sorry I posted this....did not realize what a hot topic. I was not bitching for whoever ranted....just wanted info so I could plan & pack so as to have the proper clothes. Wish the few people on here who rant would just ignore post if they make you so angry. I love these boards for info and most of the people are so helpful.

All I can say is the last place I would clean any very nice clothing is in an industrial grade washer and dryer like they have in public laundry rooms. I also wouldn't leave it there to be taken out and left in a pile by others who are in a hurry to get theirs done. I can't imagine that I would want to sit in the laundry room waiting for my laundry either, but as you say ymmv.

Some time ago on another Board, Cruise Critic was referred to as An Island of Information in a Sea of Drama and indeed it seems this is what we have become.
