Thrak Posted May 21, 2016 #51 Share Posted May 21, 2016 That is my wish, too! But I would suffice with a ship other than the Grand here in SF. Time to trade it out for the Crown or the Ruby, I think! The Grand is OK but I agree that the Crown or Ruby would be a nice replacement. Either one would be nicer than the Grand. I have sailed Star out of SF a couple of times but I did like Crown better. I don't care about Skywalker's and I like Adagio. At least Grand does have Alfredo's though.
cruzsnooze Posted May 21, 2016 #52 Share Posted May 21, 2016 I just booked my Favorite covered mini suite. I hate to fly so this is wonderful. It will be our fourth Alaska cruise to the same ports BUT we don't have to fly so I'm all in.
ar1950 Posted May 21, 2016 #53 Share Posted May 21, 2016 ..............................I wondered how the Alaskan cruises are without the covered pool. Our Alaskan cruise was on the Sapphire (when it was brand new) and it was nice to have that option on cool and rainy days. ....................................... We did the Ruby to Alaska last year. Depending on the weather on any given day, pool time might be a tad too chilly or it could be fine. If pool time is important to you then this may be an issue (we don't care as we live in Arizona full time and have a pool). For us, cool days are great (again, an Arizona thing ). YMMV
timtrek Posted May 21, 2016 #54 Share Posted May 21, 2016 While I was on a cruise to Hawaii a while back I met a woman who was asking everyone to sign a petition asking Princess to do an Alaska cruise out of Los Angeles. I signed and thought it sounded great, but doubted that Princess would ever do this. WELL..... Princess must have listened! There is a 12 night Alaska cruise sailing April 27, 2018 on the Emerald Princess. Bookings just opened today. I'm posting this for people who like to sail out of Southern CA. I don't want you all to miss this opportunity. I'm guessing this is a test by Princess to see how well it sells. BTW, it follows the 28 day Tahiti, Somoa, Hawaii cruise. That would be an awesome B2B!! Just booked it yesterday as soon as I saw it. Couldnt believe how many Balconies were already booked. But it was a great excuse for booking a Mini Suite :) Really looking forward to this cruise - NO AIRFARE! Sweet!

donaldsc Posted May 21, 2016 #56 Share Posted May 21, 2016 (edited) Not only do I think it'll sell out quickly but pricing will go up. Here's the itinerary: On a 13 day cruise to Alaska, you only have 4 days in AK. I can't imagine why anyone would take the cruise unless they did not really like Alaska - in which case why take a cruise to Alaska. Makes no sense to me. Obviously though based on the comments in the thread, I must be in the minority. DON Edited May 21, 2016 by donaldsc
Pam in CA Posted May 21, 2016 #57 Share Posted May 21, 2016 Hi Pam....We have been booked for Alaska in 2017 for a long time. I checked with the others, and they don't want to switch. Someday we will connect on a cruise. Sorry you won't be on this cruise. I'll just have to drive down to SD some time so we can have lunch or something. :)

Obviously though based on the comments in the thread, I must be in the minority. Two words: no flying. No need to fly to or from Alaska or spend another day or two traveling. While this cruise is relatively expensive, when you factor in no air or hotel costs, it's not bad. Love sea days and it doesn't matter to me whether it's warm or cold. The others who have booked this cruise will also make it very special. I think it's gonna be a ball. Plus I get to visit Alaska again.
MsSoCalCruiser Posted May 21, 2016 #59 Share Posted May 21, 2016 Big plus... No need to fly before or after the cruise. No having to get a hotel room either. I love Alaska but also having several Sea Days means: Lots of time to spend with old friends and time to make some new friends, ship activities, Kindle time, Pub Lunch, Casino, walking on the Promenade deck, MUTS (bundle up buttercup) and anything else I can think of. Sounds wonderful to me! :)
VibeGuy Posted May 21, 2016 #60 Share Posted May 21, 2016 And to be fair, it's a given that the Vancouver-Juneau segment will be via the Seymour Narrows which will make for a spectacular day of scenic cruising. So I'd happily count that as a fifth day.

MsSoCalCruiser Posted May 21, 2016 #62 Share Posted May 21, 2016 We sail out of SF quite often and usually the conditions are pretty choppy going north. Thank you, Cruise Raider this is exactly what I was thinking.

Cache Trekker Posted May 22, 2016 #64 Share Posted May 22, 2016 I think this cruise was meant for folks that live in Southern California and close to the port. We had also been pushing for this itinerary for a very long time. It will be sold out very soon, we were one of the first to book it!!!:):):) You're right, and there are a lot of us here in Southern California so I'm sure it will sell out soon. I hope my cruising pals will be as excited as I am.

DON You have the same number if days in Alaska as you do on just about any Alaska cruise with many relaxing sea days as well. It is much like the Hawaii cruise we love - 14 or 15 days with 4 in Hawaii. Wish we could join those of you going on this trip.

After 2 or 3 sea days, I am pacing the deck looking for land. Any land. Anywhere. I would love to take cruises where there are zero sea days. I guess the phrase "different stroke for different folks" applies. DON

notentirelynormal Posted May 22, 2016 #68 Share Posted May 22, 2016 (edited) As a "newbie" I was happy to see this cruise come up, since we live in Long Beach area. We just booked our second ever cruise for September 2107 to Alaska on the Grand from San Francisco. Wow! Now YOU are a planner! :D Welcome to Cruise Critic. I can't believe how this cruise is almost sold out on the second day. If I didn't have a Alaskan Cruise booked already I'd be on this like white on rice. (Just like I thought a RT Panama Canal Cruise would ever happen. LOL. Wrong on both counts.) We are booked!!! April is a little early in the season - and weather in the Pacific NW can be unpredictable, but it will be worth it. Seas probably won't be any worse than our April Pacific Coastal this year that had the Captain saying things like gale force winds and 15-foot waves as we traveled from LA to SF. We even stayed overnight in SF rather than brave the winds by leaving at 11 PM. Next day, everything was smoooooth sailing. Anyway - really looking forward to this one. It will be our 4th Alaskan cruise. All the rest have been late in the year, usually the last cruise of the season. Will be different to be on the first. Thanks again...
