want to see more tv programming on your room TV's

I am so happy to know I am not the only person who wants to see improvements made for onboard TV programming on Royal Caribbean. We are taking a 12 day Southern Caribbean cruise and just to get news or some newer programming in our rooms would be nice since there are so many at sea days. We too like to watch TV as we get ready for meal times. I have been ill for the last 5 yrs with a serious disease and I need to rest because of fatigue and having some TV programming would be excellent to allow me to rest up some in the comfort of the room. If other cruise lines are offering newspapers, Direct TV and local news channels I wonder why RCCL is not considering updating programming since people fill out their surveys and mention TV programming updates. I sure hope they are reading CRUISE CRITIC to see the need for update onboard communication services in the room beyond just internet speed.

 

I think it would be wise for Royal Caribbean to study this issue and make some improvements. Thank you everyone for your responses.

The strange thing is that TV on Celebrity has a much better selection of channels. Both Celebrity and RCI are owned by the same company - you would think they would have basically the same lineup on all of their ships.

I agree. That's why we booked our Hawaii cruise on Celebrity instead of RCI because 5 days at sea with RCI TV would be awful. We're D+ and love RCI, but again the TV is miserable.

Although we don't cruise to watch tv, we do watch some each day. Mostly for the CD's morning show. Then occasionally through the day when we're changing or such. But we usually turn it on to wind down before going to bed. My issue isn't always so much as not a big selection as much as it is why can't there be more in English. Big Ban Theory in multiple languages, but none of them in English. I know RCI is a multi national passenger cruise, but there are still lot's of English speaking passengers. Especially form US Ports.

Port Canaveral". HUH????!!! Orlando is 40 miles away inland, and is not

even in the same county!!

 

Orlando is in Orange county, Port Canaveral is in Brevard county, and the

port has an address of Port Canaveral with Cape Canaveral and Coco Beach

as the nearest towns.

I do use the TV quite a bit during cruise - while I get ready for dinner and before bed - and I usually find something to watch. I also usually have a bit of OBC during my sailings so I'll treat myself to a movie. For what I use it for, I'm content with it.

I'd suggest that your assessment probably reflects that of the majority of passengers. While there are a few very vocal CC posters on this thread demanding that RCI improve the quality of programming, I think that the majority of passengers really couldn't care less. As many have said here, they don't even turn on the TV. RCI is probably right to think that it will get a much bigger bang for the buck in customer satisfaction by putting its money elsewhere.

Their week progressed with our week so that by the last night it was their last night too. I thought it was kinda funny. Two girls fell for the same guy and there was drama between them. It was a nice change.

 

But movies would be awesome!

I think the movies are only on the ships with the Dreamworks experience.

They were actually filming a new episode of that on our Oasis sailing in May. They said it will be ready sometime this summer. Was kind of a pain at times when they blocked off certain areas to film. They were filming a mini golf scene they day we boarded. They closed down the Wipeout Cafe for another scene and then one of the stores on the Royal Promenade and part of the Royal Promenade for a different scene. On the Promenade, they actually had someone directing people as they were trying to walk by, telling us not to look directly at the camera. Who knows, maybe we ended up in a shot or two.:p

Most of the movie channels are in other languages too. Okay Royal it's nice that you have all the channels in many foreign languages, but how about some English speaking movie channels. CNN and ESPN international doesn't do anything for me.

With VOOM we able to watch local tv stations back in Denver on iPad using Dishanywhere App. We are also able to download shows to the iPad I think Comcast offers similar. We use our balcony a lot and usually have the door open and something playing.

 

For me VOOM has now set the bar for internet access, while we realized that RCCL is not for us, cruising without true high speed will be difficult.

If you are in a GS and above, go to the concierge/Suites lounge and ask for DVDs.

They are free rentals for you to use.

 

 

After a long day of walking, my legs give out and I need to rest.

I respect others that don't like to have the movies on TV, but sometimes I physically need to lay up and relax.

Another incentive to get a suite, we did book a Grand suite for our next cruise.

George C it appears you are so right we just have to keep complaining. It is a major issue to me because I feel they have not looked at their audiences that they serve in quite some time for the on ship entertainment offerings via their room TV system. It is not up to date. IF Carnival one of their competitors offers Direct TV for in the rooms what is RCCL doing?

Once again, there are those of us that would like to see the better TV programming

that RCI used to have 10 years ago. Now it is all pretty lame and worthless.

 

To those passengers who "never watch TV"...and "I don't cruise to watch TV" that is

your choice. Just leave the TV off. :rolleyes: But to those of us that would enjoy

good TV programming on our down time to relax in the cabin when we want,

unfortunately there is absolutely nothing worth watching now. :(

I knew several people would post this. I don't cruise for tv either but it would still be nice to have something good to watch in the evenings while we are just relaxing.

 

And everyone cruises for different things. I don't cruise to go somewhere and sit by a pool or a beach since I can do that when at home. But many others do. If someone goes on a cruise and wants to watch tv then good for them. Their vacation their choice.

I am booked on the Serenade of the Seas next Feb for a cruise to Southern Caribbean. It is a 12 day cruise. Since the internet is still so SLOW on the Serenade and the TV programming is so awful yet it is going to be a boring time I guess. There is only so much Bingo, on board shopping and casino visits I can make. I will be visiting the fitness center too but when I come back to my room to rest I really want after all this time a more modernized channel lineup. It is nice that the cruise director does his morning show but it plays way too much!

what we would like?? It is not a huge request. You are already

showing those second run movies for free in the cinema (though

good luck trying to find a seat) and on the pool screen (try to

watch that when it is raining).

Perhaps they can funnel some of their budget from theaters and dining venues to providing current movies and television programming on in-cabin HDTVs with a full complimentary room service menu. I am sure there are guests who would greatly enjoy such an amenity.

I agree - I do like to have the TV on when in the room. I especially miss a decent news program. After a cruise I feel I'm out of touch with current events. Also I would like movies other than a "hokey" one from years ago being endlessly run.

RCI used to HAVE decent programming 10 years ago, but they substituted it

with the crap they show now. The second run movies are already on board,

being shown for free at the cinema and pool screen. Just how much extra

cost do you think it would be to also show them on cabin TVs like they used to?

I noticed a couple days the movie they showed on the big screen, was also on tv

 

But I vote yes for more/better programing

We are doing a lot more TA's and with all those sea days, the onboard ship entertainment isn't always something that keeps me awake

So why not go back to the cabin, turn on a movie and relax:D
