Am I a killjoy? (Pool party noise)

Okay, my question really is, could/should Celebrity do more to warn you about the late-night pool party noise before you select your cabin/stateroom?

Background: We have just returned from a good 7-day cruise around the Greek islands on the Equinox. We attended all the main theatre shows apart from the first night and enjoyed them all, and loved the CD Alejandro and Activities Manager Rachel, who throw themselves into everything, and I guess were also behind the pool party which went on until midnight.

We were in an A1 cabin, deck 11 midship, right under the pool deck and felt the full force of the thumping of the music and could plainly hear the words, eg Satisfaction, Great Balls of Fire etc (good choices IMO). But, and this is a big but, we had had a full day and planned an early start the next morning and wanted to get to sleep by 11 pm. No chance!

We had an A2 cabin last year on the Constellation (also under pool deck but closer to the solarium end) and although I heard the moving of the deck furniture people talk about on here, it didn't bother me very much.

I did ring down to the front desk after 11 pm to tell them that not being able to get a good night's sleep was not my idea of Modern Luxury but I feel a bit mean about having done it; lots of people were obviously having a great time. NB My call changed nothing and nor did I expect, or want, it to - I knew it was scheduled to end at midnight. I just wanted Celebrity to know that not telling people about the potential for substantial noise in these rooms was unacceptable in my book. There was also dance-type pool activity one afternoon too, but then we were quite happy to vacate our rooms whilst it was going on.

Don't you think that these (premium) cabins should come with a warning from Celebrity? There must be those who know they are likely to be attendees at such events or enjoy regular late nights and therefore would not be put off. Or am I asking too much?

In my not-so-humble-opinion, 11pm is not late. Celebrity cruise ships are large ships and carry many people. Each of those people has a different idea what a cruise vacation should entail. I say let everyone enjoy their cruise in their on way.(within limits) If avoidance of the public areas is important because one wants better sleep, I believe that is the job of the passenger selecting their stateroom.

Whatever you do, don't stop cruising,:)

I agree 11 pm is not late - I'd have been okay had it stopped then - it went on until midnight. Again, not late unless you want to get up early the next day as we did.

I am certainly wiser about stateroom selection than I was that's for sure :D

Sorry about your trouble with noise - these are 'lessons learned' with experience about plus/minus of cabin selection. Sometimes an experienced TA would know about 'noisy cabins' such as deck-9 aft cabins on M-class ships - lots of overhead chair scrapping noise from outside dining patio when weather is nice. SV cabins sometimes having soot layer on verandas from exhaust, front cabins having anchor/thruster noise, etc. Also, checking the 'sticky' at top of X board pages has feedback on many cabins in that area. Better luck next time.

Ah, yup. 🤔

Seriously, there is so much info out there about these ships and cabins, including sticky above. A little research, ask on these boards, and/or a good TA and a better choice for you can be made. Sorry for your issue with the noise.

No, you're not a killjoy. You want peace and quiet. That's not too much to ask for IMO.

What you are is a little inexperienced. I would never, ever choose one of those cabins for a few reasons: the pool noise, the people noise, the chaise lounge noise, and the huge overhang blocking all the wonderful sun. It's something you learn the more you cruise - what works for you and what doesn't. I think you probably learned a valuable lesson & will never again book those cabins.

Should Celebrity tell people about the potential for late noise? Well, if they did, no one would book those cabins! ;)

I'm glad to hear there was something going on until midnight.

The only way to almost avoid potential noise is to book with cabins above & below. Although on 1 cruise whoever was above us did what I'm guessing was an early morning (5a.m.) work-out-jumping jacks, running in place, things being dropped with a big thud!

I agree.....that is why Carnival will not be my go to cruiseline! I just bought earplugs yesterday for a "just in case" moment on HAL!

Don't take that deck again you did not learn the first time with the first one, right?

Deck 6 the Life boats

the states near the Elevator the Main foyer music noise

Deck 3 the main foyer noise

deck 11,12 the pool noise..

balcony sides the people outside noise

the people above, beside, below or the sides NOISE. it is all around you and you have no control. but keep to Deck 7, 8, 9 you be good

Never will I take top deck, never will I take lower deck I always take a balcony and near deck 8 LOVE IT

11pm should be the universal hour that deck noise be lowered or eliminated. Some of the most expensive cabins on the ship are directly affected by excessive noise. It's not being a killjoy to ask that at 11pm, one be able to sleep in their stateroom.

It wasn't your first cruise. And you had experienced noise above you before. So...I guess after these two cruises, you learned to look at a deck plan when choosing your room. ;)

A pool deck party going on until midnight is norm on cruises where weather doesn't interfere. Complaints most often here about Celebrity is that there isn't ENOUGH late music venues. ;)

I am a light sleeper and always have ear plugs packed if necessary. You might consider the same.

I think what's missing in all these comments is that it wasn't the pool deck that was the problem...........it was THE POOL PARTY which most people do not know about until they are in their room trying to sleep that night. Those type of events are NOT shared before you get on the ship.......and while some cruisers participate in ship activities including bars/casino until late into the night; other cruisers are more itinerary focused and are looking forward to daylight activities. Saying a certain time (11 pm?) is "not late" doesn't apply to everyone's choices on a cruise.

I do agree that cabins on the deck above and below is the best you can do to avoid noise issues in your room. I do think that when a customer has a valid concern--(ongoing noise affecting ability to sleep in their cabin) that X should step up and try to 'make it right' in some manner if they are creating the noise........so sorry this happened. It's never fun to not sleep!!

I disagree. There are many posts on CC highlighting the fact that those Aqua cabins are directly under the pool area where noise is an issue, whatever time of the day. It has also been documented by many that often Aqua cabins are in less desirable locations and that's why X provided the extra perks in order to sell those 'less' desirable (location wise) cabins.

As Mario said above, it's a trade-off. That's why in many instances Aqua is cheaper than Concierge. It's what's more important to you. Some pax spend hardly any time in their cabins so appreciate Blu more than anything else and are not bothered by location. On the other hand, other pax would never book a cabin where there is a public deck either above or below. Unless you book a GTY, X let you choose your own preference, so why should they 'make good'? It would be different if you had constant noisy neighbours, smoking on the balcony, maintenance issues etc., but a one-off event for the whole ship's enjoyment? Similar to going to Epcot and not expecting the nightly laser/firework display.

Lesson learned, for sure.

I had a cabin under the pool deck on a HAL cruise once. There was no late night noise, but at 5:30 every morning, we could hear them putting the pool chairs out!

I always make sure there are just cabins above and below me. Doesn't guarantee you won't have annoying neighbors, but does give me the best odds.

Carnival Cruise lines used to specifically call some of their cabins "night owl cabins" because of their proximity to the disco, casino, etc. Anyone who has cruise experience, or even experience booking rooms in hotels/resorts....knows to look at the location vis-a-vis public venues. On cruise ships we usually look for cabins that are surrounded (top, bottom and all sides) by other passenger cabins. As a rule, we would never book a cabin directly under any pool deck...not so much because of a party (we do not even think of going to bed until midnight) but because you can often hear scraping chairs....especially in the morning when the pool stewards are arranging chairs and cleaning.

My advice to the OP is, book your next cruise on HAL...where nearly everyone is asleep by 10 :).

I agree with everyone else - researching your cabin is important but to be honest, I don't think anything much will have been flagged up as 11pm - is very early indeed to expect nightlife to have come to a close - especially on a Med cruise as Europeans like to party late -

On Costa ships late dining can be 10.30pm!! WITH babies and children joining in ...

Only thing I would have complained about was "Great Balls of Fire" - too "old hat" for "Modern Luxury"

I think this is the same cruise director we had for our Equinox TA cruise last fall - don't know which century he is out of - he is all "FabbaAbba" and 1950s retro - for sure no Calvin Harris....

Ear plugs and a few Irish Coffees might be the answer ;)

I suspect that they had the music turned up too loud. I find this to be a problem quite a bit with outdoor events. Generally Celebrity is not too bad in this regard, but I have been in the pool area at times (especially on NCL) when I could not stand the loud music.

Lesson learned many years ago - the NUMBER ONE criteria in choosing a cabin in that it have only other cabins above and below it. The second lesson is always bring earplugs, as you never know what you'll get in terms of noisy neighbors or other surprises. The real lesson for us was one cabin that was directly under the piano bar - how bad could it be to hear a little music every once in awhile? Unfortunately almost every night there was a pretty poor Billy Joel 'wantabee' performing until about midnight. Thinking back on it, we must have been right under the piano itself, because we heard every note.

Wow, that's a whopper of a tale. Long before CC or AQ concepts even existed, cabins on the top and next to the top floors were always, always, always the highest priced cabins on the ship. Everyone knows that.

I stand firmly with the OP here. 11pm needs to be the designated "reasonable" noise time on the pool deck. That doesn't mean library silence, but nor should it mean that the front half of AQ cabins need earplugs or white noise machines.

I never understood the reasoning of higher on the ship is better. To me higher is noisier. The best cabins are mid-ship. Concierge cabins are usually forward. Aqua are higher and suites even higher. We were offered upgrades from our A1 cabin. No way was I going to give up my hump cabin on deck 9 on the Eclipse for a few canapés.

Of course you never know about inconsiderate people who slam doors of have to talk loudly walking down corridors, or the person doing jumping jacks on your head.

There is a sticky where you should post the pros and cons of your cabin.

That may have been the case previously, but why then on all the S class ships are the best suites not on that deck under the pool? Perhaps because of all the prior complaints? Together with the overhang issue. There are many, many posts on here every week stating that they are Captain's Club members and are entitled to the 1 free category upgrade, yet insist they want to keep their A2 position and NOT be upgraded to A1s.

I have been in one of those cabins on a med cruise. IT is NOT fun, it's not just the noise, but the vibrations of the band that comes thru the ceiling. Yes you can research cabins, decks etc, but unless you have been on the ship you don't know where the bandstand will be. One side of the deck can be fine and the other rocking out. Unfortunatly for the guy who gets the noisy cabin, it's an expensive mistake, to the rest up on deck it's a great party-- bottom line is you can't please everybody. I feel your pain OP! I learned my lesson, I loved the big balcony on the hump, but I like to sleep so I'm refreshed for my next port day, so I have gone back to A2's under the beauty shop, very quiet.
