Hi Folks

For all cruises leaving or arriving at Australian ports smoking is totally banned inside the ship .. open air smoking area;s are designated and these are the ONLY area's where its permitted to smoke.

If you dont care for a smoky cruise perhaps you can consider Australia for your next cruise ....:D

John

Did a B4B going to AU and around it and it was so wonderful to be smoke free from Hawaii onward ? I believe.

No big deal, however on our last cruise we had an aft veranda and not only did the party next to us smoke on the veranda but they had (AND THIS IS WHAT GOT ME) the nerve to slide their used ashtray, with two crushed out butts in it, under the wall between our verandas to our side at night when they were done smoking. We turned them in and they were visited by security a day or so later.

That would be a red flag for me and yup I would absolutely report asap. Where did they get the ashtray?

Cabin steward as well as guest relations on Liberty told me they must observe the violation, or see evidence in cabin, no videos or pictures of smokers are permitted when guest are on their balcony taken by another guest as it is a violation of privacy, which is a more severe violation than the smoking ban.

That's not entirely accurate. Leaning around a divider would be wrong, but anything that can be seen from your balcony railing is not private, and is in no way a violation. These are pictures I took on a recent cruise to prove a point in a review I wrote. This was totally open view.

Did you report them to guest services and showed them the pictures? How could they tell where the cabin is located? The pictures are different views.

I did not report them because those pics were taken on Holland America, who allows it. I used them in a review to explain why I would not be booking HAL again until they changed their policy.....which is Jan 1, by the way.

The cigar was 2 balconies forward of me. The cigarette was directly below me. Had this been on RCI, it would have been easy to know the cabin numbers.

It would be very easy for the poster who took the photos to identify the offender as having been on a balcony "X" cabins left or right of theirs, and "Y" many decks above or below. With that information, finding the cabin would be child's play.

Jeez folks...this is really a non-issue. The wind blows it away, so YOU aren't breathing it. Live and let live. I can't imagine spending my vacation time trying to "catch" someone doing something they aren't supposed to. Waste of MY time!~

IMO a rather ignorant viewpoint and quite dismissive of good people who have moderate to severe allergic reactions to second hand smoke.

As a former and now reformed smoker myself, I fought hard to break a decade long addiction, and while not allergic, I certainly would be furious if I paid money for a balcony and some other person with NO regard for anyone but themselves decided to break the rules. The smoke stinks and I have no desire to smell it anywhere, anytime.

I am F---Ing sick and tired of it. Smoking causes me to have a nasty allergic reaction - I paid - thousands of damn dollars for my cruise and it will be smoke free. I detect smoking I call security and demand they attend immediately. ZERO tolerance. I take video and photos for proof, and I push for the fines.

Smoking on your balcony when it is prohibited is RUDE. You enjoy your balcony smoke or no smoke - I don't get that luxury. If I can smell it - it's a problem. You have smoking areas, I stay away and respect your areas you respect mine.

To answer the OP question : every single cruise I have to call at least 2-4 times sadly. Many here think it's a waste of time - but normally first day or so I have to call and then it stops. Just be very pushy about getting it stopped.

On NCL they deliver a bottle of wine to me each time it happened and made them stop.

I find SO MANY here on CC feel that rules/requests apply to others and not them. Same with SMOKING. I say make the first offense very painful, not a warning, and most will cease. Until that is done, some smokers will continue to abuse the rule.

Agreed.

If they can prove/smell/have evidence, then strong action should be taken.

1) 1 day confinement to cabin ?

2) $1000+ Fine ?

3) Seizure of all smoking materials ?

4) Random room inspection if you break the rules ?

RCI doesn't do enough to prevent it in my opinion. They need a small "No smoking" sign on the balcony door with the words "No Smoking In Room or On Balcony" in 47 languages

Force people to sign a no smoking policy document at check in that proves they have read and understood the policy.

I recently got into a lift on Harmony - and a guy was Vaping IN the lift. I was so pissed off I immediately exited and said something, and it wasn't nice.

It's funny but I just watched a video on YouTube about the Royal Suite on Navigator and when they panned across the balcony there was a cigarette pack, a lighter and an ashtray sitting on the table. I think it is a fairly recent video so I guess they thought since they were in the Royal Suite they didn't have to follow the rules!

Haven't had a cigarette in 2 years but:

1) 1 day confinement to cabin ?

Lawsuit.

2) $1000+ Fine ?

How will they collect?

3) Seizure of all smoking materials ?

Sounds reasonable.

4) Random room inspection if you break the rules ?

Possible.

No matter what fine - I'm sure they'd collect against whatever form of payment the person would have for on-board charges. They currently already fine people $250.

Like many others posting on this thread, I have asthma. Smoke kicks it off for me. We haven't cruised since they banned smoking on the balconies. I'm glad they have, but I know we'll likely see people breaking the rules. If I see where smoke is coming from - I definitely will report it.

It's been great here in Illinois since they banned smoking in any public indoor spaces - including casinos. We love playing blackjack, but won't on the cruise since smoking is allowed in the on board casino.

A second time and only $250, that's nothing to cruisers who spend a cruise or more worth of money a year in the cost of cigarettes..... make it a $1000 first time, no warning. That will get their attention.

Agreed. Make the fine high enough to be a real deterrent.

I will add, after reading more comments, that you look around the balcony divider once and I will politely ask you not to do it again. You do it again and I will not be so nice. Do it a third time and I will be complaining to the desk. It is rude and an invasion of privacy. I don't smoke on my balcony and I expect you not to be a peeping Tom. It is a matter of simple manners which some of you are obviously lacking.

I've had more trouble with noise and drunks dropping/throwing cans off of their balconies. Since the smoking ban was put on the balconies we've noticed none.

I'm an avid non-smoker. My wife is highly sensitive to smoke. When they could smoke on balconies, we did more than one cruise where she was not ablt to go onto the balcony for most of the cruise due to smokers nearby. But it was legal, so no right to complain. I did tend to be upset as I also paid a premium for a balcony and was driven from it by the actions of another. So I am "all in" on kicking smokers off the ship for breaking the rules. However I have to say, since the ban, and as it's been going longer and longer, we have rarely smelled smoke on our balconies. There have been a couple of times, but they have been few and far between. One time I did loudly tell my wife "better not come out dear, some idiot's smoking on the balcony. Might have to call security." Never smelled smoke again. So I think the ban works, and i think a warning, followed by $250, followed by tossed off the ship works just fine. A lot of times the rule breakers are more "blow hards" than serious. Call their bluff and report them and they immediately back down.
