Smoking on balconies

I'm an avid non-smoker. My wife is highly sensitive to smoke. When they could smoke on balconies, we did more than one cruise where she was not ablt to go onto the balcony for most of the cruise due to smokers nearby. But it was legal, so no right to complain. I did tend to be upset as I also paid a premium for a balcony and was driven from it by the actions of another. So I am "all in" on kicking smokers off the ship for breaking the rules. However I have to say, since the ban, and as it's been going longer and longer, we have rarely smelled smoke on our balconies. There have been a couple of times, but they have been few and far between. One time I did loudly tell my wife "better not come out dear, some idiot's smoking on the balcony. Might have to call security." Never smelled smoke again. So I think the ban works, and i think a warning, followed by $250, followed by tossed off the ship works just fine. A lot of times the rule breakers are more "blow hards" than serious. Call their bluff and report them and they immediately back down.

Although I am totally against smoking, I wouldn't want one to peer into my balcony. I would never peer around the balcony divider. I have smelled smoke but unable to determine where it is coming from. Most of the time it is obvious as the last few cruises they were smoking and leaning over the balcony rail.

If I smell it, next time I see the cabin Steward, I am likely to mention that someone nearby has been smoking, and leave it at that.

Like I said, until the first offense means something other than a warning, the rule will continue to be broken.

Then there are those that complain about smokers in the smoking areas.

I don't smoke but will on occasion enjoy a cigar (4 or 5 times a year and usually on a cruise) but I always make sure I stick to the areas I'm supposed to. On the NOS last year I was in the cigar bar after dinner and stepped out for a minute. DW said a woman came into the cigar bar and complained loudly about the smoke and put on a show worthy of an Oscar. Her husband was with her and he lit a cigar up and apparently ignored her. Maybe, just maybe, he was hoping for 5 minutes of peace and quiet but she made sure that wasn't going to happen for him or anyone else for that matter.

I will add, after reading more comments, that you look around the balcony divider once and I will politely ask you not to do it again. You do it again and I will not be so nice. Do it a third time and I will be complaining to the desk. It is rude and an invasion of privacy. I don't smoke on my balcony and I expect you not to be a peeping Tom. It is a matter of simple manners which some of you are obviously lacking.

I know I don't plan on peeking around any balcony dividers. If, however, I smell smoke - I will try to find out where it's coming from so I can report it.

I wouldn't think many people would be peeking around balcony dividers just to spy on others! Though these days - with the security cameras they have looking at the sides of the ships - I'd hope no one would be doing anything they wouldn't want to be seen doing, anyway!

I agree, the balcony is ones personal space and not to be peered upon by their neighbors.

I also don't go into a designated smoking area and raise a ruckus or anything else. I do believe that those smoking in the Casino should also be playing and not using it as an indoor smoking area. I hope one day soon it will also be a non smoking area.

Just got off B2B on the Oasis. First leg we had smokers that threw their buts overboard (nothing was done). At the pool if you looked over at Central Park there was always some guy smoking out there (yikes! Live trees!). Chair hogs every day (same people) pool attendants were told, and they keep a chart with times at the beach pool. Nothing done. I gave up and had another frozen thingie!

Absolutely agree! I would be very annoyed if someone felt the need to peak around the balcony divider. Once.. fine but any more I would complain as well.

I agree. The worse thing us NON SMOKING advocates could do, peering into another's space/balcony.

Please don't look into your neighbors balcony. I would never promote that an it is probably worse than SMOKING.

Just raise the penalty on the first offense, no warning. Until such time that the first offense hurts, they will continue to break the rules.

Agree. I too value my privacy on my balcony. But then I don't smoke and put lives at risk.

Agree. No one should ever peer into anyone's balcony (private space) for any reason. Unless you knew them. Call GS and have they can let security handle the smoking violation. We would never say anything to the smoker as some may be cool about it but some may not. No need for what might turn into an ugly confrontation.

And then there are those who are having a smoke on their balcony and talking on their cell so loud that you can hear them in your cabin with the door closed.

And we can talk about the loud ones in the CL and DL..... but lets not....

Just about NON SMOKING....

Ok so take this with a grain of salt because I did lol! My friend is a very funny but mischievous guy. He sailed in a balcony cabin last year and said he could smell someone smoking on their balcony. He didn't care, said it was just a whiff, whatever. However there was a very loud, dramatic, gauche couple near his balcony as well and they would make a giant performance about it all the time. He said the first day they were peering over everyones balcony trying to find the culprit and waving their arms, coughing and generally being a nuisance. So in order to annoy them or put a stop to their antics or probably just to amuse himself, he called and reported their cabin for smoking every time they disturbed him lol. He said she sounded like Edith Bunker yelling 'It ISN'T US!!!' every time security came. I know that's awful but it just made me laugh so hard!:p

Jeez folks...this is really a non-issue. The wind blows it away, so YOU aren't breathing it. Live and let live. I can't imagine spending my vacation time trying to "catch" someone doing something they aren't supposed to. Waste of MY time!~

Kind of missing the point ... it's not about live and let live. It's a fire hazard and you don't want a fire on a ship. At least one onboard fire that I can remember was caused by some inconsiderate J*&K smoking on a balcony and throwing the butt overboard. The "butt" drafted the ship and ended up causing a fire in some towels left on another balcony. So ... it may be a waste of your time but not mine. I'd rather be safe. Try having some accountability in your life!

Ok, how's this.

Hal is banning smoking on all their balconies..........casino's soon to follow:D

Out of curiosity, as I know nothing about cruising on HAL, when they ban smoking in the casino will they still have smoking sections elsewhere on the ship? I would hope so, or I would imagine that the number of sneaky balcony smokers would increase.

Some ships have the Oak room, but most have no indoor place, as do most cruise lines. The best they do is have a covered area for smokers.

Only one ship has the Oak Room (Noordam). It's the only indoor smoking lounge in their fleet. All but 3 ships still allow smoking in the casino.

Yeah but you can't fix stupid, nor ignorance for that matter. There's nothing stopping that same moron who tossed his smoke overboard from doing it elsewhere on the ship in a proper smoking area. Any idiot who would toss something from his balcony is going to do the same on an open deck in a smoking area. Believe me, I've seen it.

If you look it up the highest percentage of fires happen in Engine rooms and the Galleys, there are even a few that have been caused by electrical outlets in cabins. Though balcony smoking also may cause fires and are definitely a potential fire hazard that is a lower percentage than the others.

So, what percent of a fire is acceptable to you?

Zero for me...... If it is a added risk, ban it.
