Smoking on balconies

Thank you! They want to paint us all with a very broad brush. I guess it's easier to think we are all alike. I smoke. I smoke considerately and only in smoking areas. Most smokers do. I think we all get tired of being blamed for what a few do. It is like blaming all of those who drink for a drunk falling off of a ship rail and going on and on about the drinkers. They would find that nonsensical. And so is going on and on and on about all smokers.

I don't think people are painting all smokers with the same brush at all. This thread is about rule breakers and an unauthorized activity being conducted in an unapproved area, causing annoyances to others. If you are a rule abiding smoker who doesn't smoke in unauthorized areas, this thread doesn't pertain to you and you shouldn't be so offended.

Celebrity's casino's are smoke free :)

Ok, good, part of Royal so hopefully Royal will adapt the same policy.

Actually, I wouldn't hold my breath on that one. ;)

Celebrity has long held the gold standard for restricted smoking. Not only are the balconies and casino smoke free, but there is NO indoor smoking on any of their ships. Outdoor smoking is limited to a few specific areas, and cigar/pipe smoking only is only allowed in one place. Royal's current smoking policy is more in-line with other mainstream cruise lines.

I am not blaming SMOKERS for anything... although I really can't name anyone that smokes that we hang with.... having said that, they have rights too.... I will never say they don't have rights... but I do have the right to complain about SMOKING... I used to SMOKE, it is an addiction, I would probably like nothing more than having a SMOKE, but I don't believe I could just have ONE... some people can, but not me... it was a BAD addiction for me, and I really don't want to go there again. I am not against you, I am against smoking, vape or the real stuff.

If you convince them to make all the areas on the ship SMOKING, we will do something else. Many people don't believe in the rules and those that break them make it hard on those SMOKERS that follow the rules.

Everyone has rights, this is a debate that needs to be heard... many are debating today by other means and are being heard...

Who ever suggested smoking everywhere?

People need to get along and be respectful of each other and each other's rights. I think they've hit a good compromise but there are those who are never happy and want no smoking anywhere. People need to use some sense.

You know, from my conversation with crew, it will not be the non smoking cruisers that shut down smoking in the Casino, but the rights of those working in the Casino, the right to work in a SMOKE FREE work environment, that will win the day.

This is a large part of the reason that indoor smoking was banned in Australia, along with a ban on smoking in vehicles if there are children present.

Where I live there are even restrictions on smoking outside - such as in outdoor spaces in restaurants and bars:

A "Designated Outdoor Smoking Area" (DOSA) requirements include; may not encompass more than 50% of the outdoor area, must be separated from smoke-free areas by no less than 4 metres or a non-transparent fixed wall barrier at least 3 metres high.

The kids in the casino who covered their faces may not have been taught by their parents. Here, the schools educate kids from a very young age about the dangers of smoking to try to stop them from taking it up (knowing how addictive it is). I remember being a bit shocked about my daughter's overreaction to a smoker and that was the reason why. (I did ask her to tone it down but also to never ever take up smoking!)

In casinos and other places with slot machines there used to be the ability to reserve your machine and go outside for a few minutes without worrying that someone would take the machine you were sure was just about to win :) but it seems slot machines no longer have that function. The people who don't play at all and come in just to smoke and the smokers who break the rules by smoking in the non smoking section of the casino or on balconies are the ones who annoy me.

I used to smoke more than a pack a day and I know how hard it is to give up. Best wishes to all who try.

Hey, that is a start in the right direction. The Casino has become somewhat of a indoor air conditioned smoking lounge. I think Royal is taking some steps to prevent this. Last cruise on EN, the bar area was also NON SMOKING. Often, many used to like to sit at the bar or around the bar and smoke. I saw many people smoking in the Casino last week on EN when the Casino was closed. You must walk through the Casino to get to the other side, I believe one level of the MDR.

Was on Adventure a couple of years ago, and the smoking in the casino was so bad, we could not even use the schooner bar, as the smoke was coming out along the passage.

The smoke also came up the stairs onto the royal promenade and could be smelt and tasted in the pub. it was acting like a chimney

not been that bad on indy, so maybe its the Voyager class? will find out soon , going on Navigator, or maybe that cruise had alot of smaokers who were using the casino?

don't know as we could never face going in there.

Not at all. People use the word allergy because they think it sounds worse. I like facts. Say smoke irritates you. Say it brings on asthma attacks. It's not about being smart. It's about being factual and honest. I'm sorry you have a problem with that but I know a lot of people do.

My point remains the same. It causes serious reactions in some people. The word chosen to describe it has no bearing on the severity of reaction.

You are choosing to ignore the problem and focus on the term to describe it.

I also don't believe the majority (I'm sure some do) of people refer to it as an allergy to ramp up support. I'm pretty sure the phrase "serious asthmatic reaction" denotes the same level of red flags.

I don't have asthma, but I am sensitive to tobacco smoke. Doubly-so if I'm wearing my contacts, which I usually am.

Interesting note... nearly 250,000 worldwide die from asthma attacks each year*, so it's not like it's somehow less serious than allergies. Which is kind of how you are presenting it.

Oh I agree...

Step 1 - Ban smoking in the Casino when it is not OPEN. Otherwise it is just a SMOKING LOUNGE, indoors.

Step 2 - Ban SMOKING to those not playing while the Casino is open.

Step 3 - Begin to downsize the SMOKING area in the Casino.

Step 4 - Ban SMOKING in the Casino.

Well, when HAL announced that they will be phasing out balcony smoking in 2017, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that two of their ships already have non-smoking casinos. So, I guess it's possible that RC might follow their lead.

Thank you.... the more we discuss and debate here, the sooner it will be banned. The time is coming...

Jeez folks...this is really a non-issue. The wind blows it away, so YOU aren't breathing it. Live and let live. I can't imagine spending my vacation time trying to "catch" someone doing something they aren't supposed to. Waste of MY time!~

But congratulations on winning first prize... You've made my Ignore List on CC. :p

We go on a cruise every year and have been doing it 15 years or so. When I book the cruise I have to research the ship so I can book on the opposite side of the smoking sections. For some reason they are different, not all on port or starboard side.

I have never been on a cruise that hasn't had some of my relaxation time on the deck ruined by some idiot smoking on their deck.

He is partially right, depends on you distance from the smoker or smokers.

Stanford University Study:

"The easiest way to avoid exposure to outdoor tobacco smoke air pollution is to be located a reasonable distance away from active smokers. For a single smoker, this distance is approximately 2 meters (6 feet) or more. However if one is directly downwind from a smoker for a significant time period, the distance will likely have to be greater to avoid exposure. We detected air pollution as far away as 9 to 12 feet from a single smoker. In addition, if there are multiple smokers, the distance will have to be increased; for example, if there are two or three active smokers present, moving to 6 or more meters (about 20 ft) away from the group may be necessary."

My first cruise was on The Carnival Paradise, it was a totally smoke free ship at the time. Not long after my cruise the ship did away with that policy. Turns out smokers spend more money on gambling and alcohol than non smokers so they were losing money.

Point is, I find it hard to believe they would ever totally ban smoking in the casino.

No, the wind doesn't blow it away, it blows it right onto your balcony!! We had this issue on a previous cruise and it was disgusting - to the point where we avoided being on our balcony, that we paid good money for.

Luckily, it is totally prohibited on RC and I would have zero qualms telling on someone. It's also a safety issue, in case you hadn't realized....

I'll do you one better - how about banning casinos altogether?? They are such a stupid waste of peoples' time and money!! I will NEVER understand the attraction of those vile places!!!

What you say is true as far as the history goes, but then you start trying to make it a relevant present day example. Times have changed so much in the years since the Paradise experiment, that it is in no way a valid reference anymore.

Heck, people used to smoke in hospitals, office buildings, restaurants, bars, even in their cars with kids. We have come a long way since then. To think that casinos cannot be successful without allowing smokers to light up in there is so 1990. Most casinos are smoke free, or at least do a much better job of having smoke free areas. In smoke free casinos, smokers still gamble, but do like they do in all other areas of their life. They step away for a quick smoke break when they get the urge. Not like the bottom line has to be hurt. Non-smokers will be able to "donate" to RCI without enduring second hand smoke, and I doubt that smokers that gamble will lose their urge to gamble just because they have to step away every now and then. That's the way the world is heading.

Agreed.... and don't forget Planes to your list... and airports now for the most part.... NON SMOKERS gamble...

Honestly, it will really not be us that stop it... it will be the CREW requesting a SMOKE FEE environment to work in... Last few cruises we have been on we discussed with the crew, most are non smokers and do not appreciate having to work in an environment with smoke.... I bet we see a lawsuit soon...:rolleyes::cool:

But in the mean time... do all you can to promote NO SMOKING in the Casino....
