What did you buy in Alaska

Hi there! In looking at some other topics (mostly about packing) I've noticed a lot of folks mentioning they either mailed packages home or needed another bag etc. for the things they purchased in Alaska. While I recognize what one buys is based on personal preference, I was wondering if one is likely to buy more stuff in Alaska then in other ports?

So if I may ask, what did you buy in Alaska?

Hi, I agree with portiemom, sometimes I buy new sweatshirts, or somethin, but I bring back awhole lot of photos, once found ulu knives for $300!!:eek: Course I past it up, an found some cheaper.

People really like Stuff that says Alaska, plus ULu knives. It sometimes easier to mail the Ulu knife than to remember it's in your baggage especially if your flying post cruise. My DW loves the Alaska shirt company in Skagway and Juneau, so she has extra room saved for shirts from there. But it's all personal preference.

I love threads like this. I'm curious to know, too. I read somewhere that Polish Pottery is a good thing to buy in Southeast Alaska, so if anyone has insight on that, I would love to hear it.

Ok, this is sad. ;) My sons and nephews, "expect" , Fudge from the Juneau fudge factory (of course each have their own special flavor) and I pick up chocolate bars.

 

Yep I purchase a LOT of chocolate. Just dropped over 50 eruos at their favorite Chocolatier in Barcelona last week. :)

Oh yes!!!! for me, I'm bringing home my Taku Fishery sockeye smoked salmon. :) I've been out for months.

I got birch syrup (like maple syrup, only more delicious!!) in Anchorage. Can't get it anywhere else near where I live.

Other than that, nothing. Just a bunch of touristy things I don't need, which were made in China.

In Ketchikan I bought canned smoked salmon. There was a man outside his shop giving samples of the salmon served on Ritz crackers with cream cheese, topped with the salmon.

We're going to Juneau and Ketchikan, not Skagway. Does anyone know if there is a post office near the dock?

Yes - there is one close in Juneau. I can't think of where it is in Ketchikan.

Not to hijack the thread but my wife is interested in purchasing smoked salmon, not the canned jerky type (although I plan on buying some of those tins) but the frozen ones on our September cruise and having it shipped home. The only issue is that we disembark on 9/9 and we are spending a few days after in Seattle. Would there be any issues? Or should we plan on a neighbor accepting the package?

My souvenir include: Fudge from the Alaska Fudge Factory in both Juneau and Skagway, Glacier Smoothie soap at the small cabin shop near the Juneau Library, seafood shops for smoked salmon (take home and vendor ship home), and the Tongass Trading Company at the Ketchikan pier for Alaska-logo jackets, Alaskan-pattern fleece, Ulu knives, smoked salmon, outfitter needs (upstairs), Alaska sweatshirts, and kids items.

We bought T shirts and caps with Mt McKinley scenes and name. Reduced because it was soon to become Mt Denali :cool:

Beyond any new stuff - salmon products mostly, in the past we have mailed stuff that we over packed home... (My husband mailed something in Ketchikan - so the post office was "close" to the port.)

 

Our last port in July 2017, in AK is Sitka on our next cruise, while there I may mail home our coats - since we won't be needing them when we deplane.

I've told this before and a few people seemed to think it was cool like I do. In Ketchikan I bought a puzzle that's made from real wood. The pieces are not like normal puzzle pieces - they are in the shape of things like a man carrying a rifle, a bear, coyote, eagle, etc. The puzzles aren't square/rectangle either - the outline is irregular. I found them on Creek Street at a store called Fish Creek Company. They aren't cheap but are well made and worth the price - around $100 or so each. They had several different animals to pick from - I got the grizzly bear like this one - it took me a LOT of hours to put it together - the hardest puzzle I've ever done. It's my favorite sovereign from the trip.

We order seafood fairly often from Alaska and if you are having the frozen shipped home, they can set the shipping date when you make arrangements so you are home first. They usually do 2 day shipping for that type of order and pack it with dry ice or ice packs and it has always worked out for us. For this trip, if we ship something home, our dog sitter will plop it in to our freezer for us. If you opt to use the neighbor, make sure to include something for them! ;)

We just told the store to wait a few days to ship. Our salmon arrived after we got back, just fine.
