Is Windjammer Really THAT bad?!?!

Recommended Posts

Johnny Rockets is so small you can never get in there and that's why I didn't mention it.

We ate outside 4 times on our Oasis B2B and enjoyed it. It's nice to eat outside in the cooler Caribbean mornings.

Now, after having lousy scrambled eggs (fake) on Freedom and Oasis in 2015 and 2016, I had real ones that were good on Majesty last fall. I did go to dinner at the WJ on Oasis and did find a couple of things I thought were really good. Jim Beam BBQ ribs for example.

Fake eggs? Where in the world did you come up with that? Did you have them chemically analyzed to determine which ones were fake and which were real?

We eat at the outside tables and haven't had a problem getting served.

Your responses made me smile. One of you is from the UK and the other from Illinois. I live in South Florida. Outside is hardly ever an option. There is no such thing to us as a "cooler caribbean morning."

Lol. Trust me the mornings on Oasis were like our "scorching" British summers. We couldn't understand the demand for inside tables...

Allure opens for dinner at 5:45.

Omelets: Other than the MDR, you can only get your breakfast omelets at Wipeout. Windjammer does not do omelets.

Have had freshly made omelets in the Windjammer on several different ships

I was very disappointed in the Windjammer on the Oasis. I did not feel that the layout was good, nor was the quality or variety. We had difficulty finding seats, and the staff was not keeping tables bussed and cleaned. Fortunately we found the Solarium Bistro for a lovely relaxing breakfast buffet and the Park Cafe for lunch.

Windjammer on enchantment was awful! For breakfast, pancakes and French toast were cold. Not not warm, COLD! One morning, there was no available seating yet an entire area was roped off and closed. On disembarking day, employees were too busy collecting tips to do their job. Embarking Day was chaos and no other options were given. My only complaint with the cruise involved windjammer.

People who complain about finding a table should be a bit more proactive. Buss the table yourself. Take the plates & glasses to the buss station, use their existing napkins to wipe crumbs and moisture.

I know I paid for the service....but why wait for someone else do something that you are perfectly capable of doing yoursef? :tropical-drink:

I have no problem with the food in the Windjammer. I have to admit that because of work I spend a ton of time in a Holiday Inn Express so any breakfast is an improvement! With that said, I avoided it for awhile, not because of the food, but because I had a horrible experience with another cruiser. I was waiting for my husband and after more than 10 minutes got up to get coffee. When I got back to my table some guy was sitting at it. I left my stuff on the table and he told me to collect my things and move. The Windjammer Staff had to come over and make him leave. It upset me so I did not even step foot in there for the rest of that cruise or the next.

This reminds me of something that happened on my last cruise (Carnival). My husband and I set our drinks and silverware down on a table for two and then went to get our food. There were empty tables all over the dining area. When we walked back with our food, a lady was sitting at our table eating her meal. It was so strange because there were empty tables everywhere.

We did clean the tables ourselves, once we found one! Staff only appeared after we moved everything. Not once was a table wiped down. And yet they expect tips?

I was also on the Allure March 19th sailing and was disappointed in the WJ quality overall. Some things are indeed good, but it seems like a crapshoot trying to find them/luck into them, and I don't want to have to sample the entire buffet just to find the gems. Observations:

Breakfast - Real eggs were good (room service were powdered and scooped, nasty!) - bacon tends to be overcooked, chicken sausage is better than the "pork" sausages aka spongy meat sticks. French toast and pancakes are usually not that great..most buffets don't get this right, as the french toast gets too soggy, and was usually not in the batter long enough or cooked long enough to get crisped. Waffles can be hit or miss as well.

Lunch and Dinner - I just don't get some of Royal's recipes...I think they are trying to appeal to too many people with some ethnic dishes, and those dishes really suffer, rather than taste like the authentic versions. Example: tiny pieces of sausage floating in a large pool of gravy, called "gumbo". A vanilla "mousse" one night is labelled "vanilla fondue" the next night, despite being the same gelatinized mess. Indian and most asian dishes were pretty good, mashed potatoes good. Most other items are not as tasty as their Golden Corral equivalents (or casino buffets), which I consider a very straightforward and basic level of expectation. My "meat and potatoes" friends had some difficulty finding things they liked, as each dish had some sort of "twist" that made it just a little bit "off". Don't make me stare at sweet and sour fish, just make sweet and sour pork or chicken, and focus on perfecting the flavor. Don't give me generic "red seafood sauce" for pasta, make a Fra Diavolo or something authentic. I think they try too hard to create 'Esperanto Cuisine" and the dishes end up suffering for it.

I love the Windjammer and on my last cruise I started to broaden my horizon and went to the Windjammer for dinner on certain nights when I didn't fancy the MDR's menu. Absolutely loved the relaxed atmosphere and there were plenty of spaces to lounge around during dinner.

For breakfast and lunch I tend to hit the Windjammer at off peak hours either soon after it opened or close to closing. The first thing I grab once inside is the napkin and cutlery then in search of seats followed by drinks before food.

What they really need to do is to provide variety of food. A lot of the food is the same and when I'm on a 14 nighters it gets abit boring towards the second part of the cruise. The desserts are certainly the same every day.

Not when people are still sitting at all the tables and you can't get a table and your food gets cold.

Maybe she craved some company.

I tend to get table first before getting food

We don't go there for breakfast now but yes we do get a table first now, then either my wife or i stay at the table while the other gets their lunch.

I've never understood why people get their food and then walk around looking for a table.

I suspect that first time cruisers don't know how difficult it might be to find a table.
