My boys started cruising when they were 3 and 6. We insisted that they dress up and wear suits (when it was the custom on formal evenings). To this day (they're now 19 and 25!), they still dress up!

But to be honest, I DON'T CARE WHAT OTHERS WEAR! WHO CARES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If others don't want to dress up, so be it! Enjoy your dinner, enjoy time with your friends and family! Don't worry about what others are doing or wearing... SHEESH!!! Life is too short! Bash me now, I DON'T CARE!

Would you really enjoy your dinner if a guy is seated next to your table, wearing a muscle shirt so you can view his hairy armpits throughout dinner? Don't tell me that wouldn't bother you..

a cruise ship is full of adults setting bad examples to kids

Eating to excess

Drinking to excess

Cavorting in skimpy swimwear

Smoking

Gambling

Roasting themselves in the sunshine

Bit rich thinking an 11 year old is heading down the wrong path because their mum allows them to "wear" shorts (as opposed to "drink" shorts" )at dinner.

You are so right. Good reason to keep kids off Celebrity cruise ships with all that going on!

Enjoy the teenage years OP if you are training your child to only obey the rules he likes. Once he realizes he is special and rules don't apply to him you'll wish you dressed him appropriately and didn't brag about your lack of respect.

LOL Those are good reasons to keep the adults off Celebrity ships.;p

Hmmm, not so sure. When our children were younger, we took them on cruises with us. The only thing they learned from example was how to behave at a shared dinner with other guests, how to dress properly for dinner, how to order politely, how to appreciate the finer things, and lots of other values.

I don't recall them learning about smoking and gambling, because they were not in the casino or smoking areas, they did not observe their parents (us) eating and drinking to excess, and they always applied adequate sunscreen with limited time in the sun.

Even if it does, I'm not going to lose sleep over it or get all bent out of shape... So he 'ruined' my 2 hours... Oh well.. People that talk in theaters or chew cud during a movie, now that bothers me... A KIDS attire on a cruise, and maybe even an adults, I'll survive....

Also, the OP was talking about a child... Come on.... I'd like to see how many rules the bashers break, i.e., chair hogs, not sanitizing at buffet, sharing a drink package, etc...

Celebrity's dress code for children, officially, no matter the age has always been the same as the adults. Unofficially, it depends on who is at the door when you enter,

I'm not so sure that you qualify as a Celebrity "expert," regarding the rules or anything else. I see from your profile you've never cruised Celebrity before, and are primarily a mostly Carnival and some RCI customer.

I would be more inclined to listen to long time Celebrity passengers, for opinions regarding X's rules, etc.

Congratulations on teaching your son that rules do not apply to him. He will do well in high school, university, and the working world.

Actually, the OP should be congratulated on promoting and encouraging individualism. And you're right, with this type of thinking he will do well in high school, college and the working world.

Perhaps you would enjoy your cruise more if you didn't waste so much time worrying about how other people dress. Although, I think that some people just love to complain.

Thanks! I wasn't sure if I was missing something. True... I've seen the "at the door" difference.

Just my opinion: I think staff is afraid that if they confront the ones not following the dress code, chair hogs, children being "dipped" in the solarium adult pool by parents (no it wasn't family hour they sometimes have), or other things that they will receive a bad review from the person they have to confront, online social media rebuke and complaints to higher ups.

For anyone in a service role, bad reviews & complaints equals promotion issues in future or loss of $. If Celebrity wanted to be serious they would back the staff when they try to enforce the rules they set. I don't think Celebrity really cares at this point

What I'm noticing is the difference between the "live and let live" types and the "respect the dress code types" is the "live and let live" types cruise mostly RCCL, NCL or Carnival. This gives me hope that my Edge cruise will have the ambiance I'm expecting. Fingers crossed.

I hope you enjoy! The ship looks great.

I did have to laugh out loud about the live and let live types you mentioned for Carnival. The last time we cruised the Miracle in 2010 we saw a few guys in their white bathrobes walking through the ship during dinner hour carrying beer bottles. Now that's living! LOL

That's funny, I saw people doing the same on the Constellation in November of last year. Sailing from Haifa to Kusadasi wearing white robes and holding beer during the dinner hours. Now that's living!

I by no means approve of passengers wearing muscle shirts in the MDR, or in any of the indoor restaurants for that matter, and I fully support strict enforcement of the dress code. That said, hairy armpits don't bother me in the slightest, and I laugh whenever someone trots out this specious argument. We have friends and family over for bbq's around our swimming pool all the time during the summer, and I've yet to see anyone having difficulty eating their burger or ribs or whatever we're serving because the men have their shirts off or are wearing a muscle shirt. All those passengers grabbing a bite from the Mast Grill and eating there or on the pool deck below have no difficulty eating with hundreds of hairy armpits on display, but seeing one in the MDR will somehow bother them? Sorry, I just don't buy it.

I think they mean it's the "venue" that matters. Outdoor vs Indoor. Shoes and shirt inside at buffet vs. Mast Grill come as you are at pool including bare feet.

OMG!!! OP put out an informational post. It amazes me how much can be said about an 11 year old behaving nicely in a polo, shorts and topsiders. And then....down the rabbit hole it went. How many more threads about shorts, sandals, and parenting? i'm finished ranting....sorry
