Hurricane Irma Watch

Recommended Posts

The latest report from the National Hurricane Center (11am) shows a more sourthernly path than the last couple of reports.

It's a good trend for us so far. Keeps getting pushed more south with the potential curve pushed more and more west. Could end up really, really bad for the Tampa area or even panhandle.

Irma might make it into the Gulf! The Atlantic high ridge must be getting stronger, as they said it might.

I really wanna have this cruise happen. Unfortunately, the "I" storms are living up to their legacy :(

As for Allure, she is scheduled to be in Labadee on Friday. That might not happen now. If Irma fallows the path of these new models Allure may try to go around the storm instead. I hope she makes it back to port on Sunday for our cruise.

Sunday would be day of impact for South Florida if this storm curves up as expected. You may get lucky, but I'd start mentally preparing for a Sunday cruise to not happen this time. Hope for the best, though.

So far it looks like the Dream will be soiling with a flip flop of schedule. Castaway Cay change up with Nassau. We have an at sea day Thursday 9/7 and are scheduled to be in port Canaveral 9/8 am. May be making a beeline for Tampa to board up the house. Hope not.

So after 10+ Cruises and Stalking this site I am motivated to make a post ;-) This is a great resource to learn everything there is to know!

We flying into Miami on 9/8 going out on the Norwegian "Booze Cruise" Sky for our 10 year Anniversary. It's a short 3 day affair. The itinerary is pretty much in ground zero of the current path of Irma (Nassau, Great Stirrup Cay). At this point we are just waiting and seeing what happens. I hope Norwegian is responsible and considers all the factors. IE, Impact of Embarkation Port, can people get home if Miami is impacted, etc, etc. What I have done to sort of prepare is book a Hotel Stay inland in preparation we might be stuck for a while. However if Irma slams Florida I think we are going to stay home and forgo the flight, etc. The bottom line is folks, this is what life hands us and you have to be willing to take a loss without insurance and plan accordingly. I see a lot of frustration here and can relate but what control do we have in the end?

Hope everyones' trip pans out ok!

We were on the Sky doing the 3-night Bahamas cruise when Sandy went through the Bahamas (before it devastated the NY area). We sailed and went out into the channel and rode it out for that Saturday in 30+ foot seas. Fortunately it was quickly through there and not quite a strong as Irma. Empties I've ever seen a dining room or casino (and only real time my daughter was seasick). So be prepared.

We will ride out Irma at home, like every other hurricane. I'll have to have someone put my shutters up if it will, in fact, hit us. That's one heck of a project but oh well. South Florida isn't anywhere near as prone as New Orleans or Houston to flooding, so I'm not terribly worried. Plenty of water, fuel, generators, food, etc. etc. More of an inconvenience than anything.

I hope RCI is better prepared this time around to cancel cruises out of South Florida and give travelers plenty of notice. I think around Thursday will be decision time. Let's see.

Where in FLL are you? I'm in Weston, and we're in the same boat as you. Unfortunately just came down with gout, so putting shutters up is going to be a chore, might need to find someone as well (especially as our house as 2 floors). Agreed, at least we're not prone to flooding, and we're not in a flooding zone (though I do have flood insurance anyway, it's cheap enough not to have it while in Florida). We could end up with 10 people and 4 dogs at our house though, as my inlaws (parents and sister w/kids) are on Marco, near the water. At least we're 15+ miles inland.

We are on Oasis until the 10th. Of course, we don't have any information on the ship. The only information I get is the Internet or what I read on cruise critic.

What are the rumors about a Sunday return to port Canaveral?

Thanks. M

Ps- gorgeous weather today (Monday) and calm seas

I'm in Davie just on the border with Weston (other side of Indian Trace). I am definitely not doing my shutters, I have a guy who does it. We have a lot of large windows (12ft tall) and it's a big chore. Waiting until later in the week before I pull the trigger on that decision. Not fun at all. House isn't that old and it's almost unbelievable they wouldn't have built it with impact windows, ugh!!!

We had some pretty good flooding the last storms that came through what, a few months ago. Tennis courts were completely submerged. So I get a little nervous but I have never seen water get anywhere close to the houses. Stay in touch if you need any help.

Thanks Ellen. I haven't heard anything official from anyone on board. It would be nice just to mention that they were monitoring it and would let us know of any changes ASAP. I know that's what they will do anyway, but still it's nice to hear from someone with stripes.

People are wondering if we will return early, miss Cozumel, return to a different port or whatever.

It is hard to even think about the weather, as today we have magnificent weather and calm seas

Thx. M

If all goes well I will be getting on that boat on the 10th when you return! I'm also paying close attention to any rumors for Sunday. None really yet. Someone had mentioned the name James Van Fleet (not sure if it was this post or another one). He's on Twitter. He's the meteorologist for Royal Caribbean. He says that they will make a decision regarding the Oasis 9/10 sailing in the next day or two. He said it might leave from another port, but that's just one of several options they are considering. Nothing decided yet of course. I don't have a twitter account but I can still view his posts. We are supposed to be doing an Eastern Caribbean cruise (I think that will change). Did they change your itinerary?

BNBR would you happen to have the name and number of your guy who puts up hurricane shutters? My sister/brother in law live right there where you do, my brother in law who is 49 had a major heart attack and had quadruple bypass last year, he is a pilot and unable to fly still and he can't put his up....my email is lyndammr@yahoo.com if your able to share the persons info.

I am in northern Florida the past few years have lived through so many hurricanes also, but my advice to people is to keep watch, it is still a bit too early to tell where this thing is going to end up...I also wouldn't suggest Floridians to put up hurricane shutters just yet, lets hope she continue to dip more southwest and miss Florida all together. We should know more by tomorrow evening. The ship is not going to be redirected to another port because as of right now, it appears all the ports will be effected in Florida with the exception of Jacksonville but the large ships cannot dock there.

In the meantime, its very possible that the current cruise could come back a day earlier or the next cruise leave the day later anything is possible, again, we need more time to figure out where its going.

Great follow. Thanks.

And his name is really "Fleet"? Funny.

Supposed to leave out of Tampa on Empress on Sat (9/9) for Key West and Cuba. I don't have a good feeling about this.

I'm on this cruise also. I really hope it's cancelled (unlikely) because I'd rather stay home then be diverted somewhere else.

It's a friend of mine, not really a contractor that does this for others, I'm sorry. I wish I could be more helpful. Just start calling contractors and handymen. Start with Angieslist. Funny enough, I have a pretty good hunch I know who your brother in law is - though it could just be another pilot near me who can't fly due to recent heart attack.

Sailing on Empress on 9-4 to Cuba. I normally would not care if we were diverted or even cancelled, but this is Cuba. I have never gone during hurricane season, only in January and February. I only booked because it was going to Cuba.

We are scheduled to leave Tampa, Sept. 9 to Key West and Cuba. I wouldn't care where we were diverted either, but its CUBA! We have never cruised in September before, this it itenerary is why.

Hi everyone! I am currently on the Harmony of the Seas in Labadee. Beautiful day and the waters are calm. We have been updated daily on Irma, but thus far there has been no indication that there will be a change in itinerary. We are headed up shortly for a sail away with the captain and senior officers so maybe there will be some mention then.
