Excursions included?

Most river cruises include most excursions.

Europe River cruises typically include an excursion in each port. And beyond this they also sell 'extra' or 'optional' excursions ...... the included one is typically a bus tour of the city or a ride to THE 'attraction' in the city. IME the bus tour is similar to the hop on/off tours available - when there's more than one thing to see - , with less hop' allowed! Some add a bike option on the 'included'.

Translation of the point: higher cost cruises, typically smaller vessels, will often include 'an' excursion in each port.

Looking at a VIKING Ocean right now and they include an excursion in each port, like they do on river cruises.

As far as I know none of the mainstream companies include excursions.

And if they did the published rates would be significantly higher than the other cruise lines. And they would likely only offer a limited selection of excursions in each port as most of them are priced differently from each other.

Viking Ocean Cruises includes one free excursion in each port. Sometimes they are walking tours and sometimes they include ground transportation. Of course they also offer other optional excursions that require a payment. But it is possible to never pay extra for any excursion if you stick with the included tours. One could argue that the tours are not "free" because all cruises on Viking Ocean are in the high price category.

However we will be sailing on the Viking Ocean SKY soon and we are hoping that it will be a good value overall.

ON the true "luxury" lines, they may include 1 specific excursion...but that's about it. If you're willing to do a bit of research and read a guidebook, you may find what you would enjoy requires NO excursion at all! We seldom take ANY excursion. We read up on our destinations, and then do our own thing, on our own timetable....so much cheaper, and we have a great time!

As noted above, Regent includes multiple excursions in its fare. There's usually a few that have a charge, but most do not. This does indeed raise the price of the cruise, so if you prefer to arrange your own tours Regent may not make sense for you. But if you prefer to do ship excursions, the inclusion of the excursions simply shifts a cost you'd be paying anyway to up front.
