I just can't get myself to feel bad for them. It's the winter. Snow, and bad weather tends to occur in the winter. You're coming from Canada, which sees lots of snow! Anyone who doesn't fly in the day before is a fool IMHO..

It was some kind of charter group/ trip, don’t believe there was an option. Seems it was mechanical not weather related.

I saw the thread and thought it was bizarre to ask other passengers onboard to go around asking the crew to hold the ship at port “because Pat and I will be there late. It was just strange.

Also, I stopped feeling sorry for the OP when she started getting snippy with people that were trying to help her.

The only time she got snippy was when people stated the obvious “ you should have flown in the day before.”

The SunWing trip wasn’t offered the day before.

I don’t think she was 100% serious and think she was just in panic mode. I didn’t think anything of it. Secondly, she started to get snippy with the idiots that were lecturing her about flying out the night before. Many of those people were hoping she didn’t make it.

There are a lot of terrible reviews about that company and that is something people should be aware of when booking that way. You get what you pay for as unfortunate as it turned out to be. I think this is good lesson for new passengers.

They seem in good spirits as they are split between the zoetry and Hyatt hotels. They meet with the ship tomorrow.

How can you think she was not 100% serious when she gave the names and the cabin number? I don’t believe anyone was hoping they did not make it to the ship. I do hope they all enjoy their New Years tonight even though it wasn’t where they originally planned to spend it.

I just hope this is a lesson learned for those who missed the flight and for anyone from Canada reading this information. There's no way I'd book with SunWing after our experience with them almost 10 years ago... they don't appear to have improved.

The money you save is not worth the angst and the missed days of cruising, I'll always book my own vacations.

The headache for everyone else on the ship is that this is no longer a closed loop trip for that group. Adding to the fact that they are not US citizens. So, US immigrations will have to process them into the country when the ship returns. Usually BEFORE anyone else is allowed to disembark. We were on a cruise last year where not all the “special people” showed for early disembarkation and processing. The whole ship stood in long lines for an hour, first on board, then in the baggage hall, waiting for the ship to find and escort the “special people” (eating a leisurely breakfast) to immigration control.

Being from Canada. I take offense to that. Why assume they will not be there.

On my 1st cruise in 1998. All non americans had to go through immigration on the ship everytime we re entered the usa. Ex peurto rico and Us virgin hours. As a "special person ". 500 of us made this special meeting 3 times in 7 days at 6.30 am. We were always all there and no americains. Got delayed.

Everybody. Please have compasition for this group.

Plenty of people attempt to fly in the day before but then THAT flight gets cancelled. It's too simplistic to chalk it up to....."They shoulda flew in the day before".

So you're at the airport the day before, your flight out gets delayed, delayed, delayed then finally gets cancelled. The airline tells you....."We can't get you out tonight, we'll have to get you on a flight tomorrow". Hmmm, Ok then tomorrow's flights are all full, now getting on ANY flight out is a big problem.

This is how many people get caught. "Shoulda flew in the day before" comments are too naive.

You may not agree with that was written but there is no need to express yourself in such a demeaning manner.

I must have missed your post expressing the same thought when that poster referred to them as "special people".

Keep padding that post count!

Hi again!

beerman2 ~ that would be interesting to know at whose expense. Was the original post on the other social media site?

Hope they all make the cruise & have a great time. I remember how frustrating & scary it was when we knew we would miss sailaway & attempting to read the insurance policy under those circumstances. It sure put a damper on the cruise.:(

All-ready2cruise ~we used Sunwing for a Thomson Dream cruise in Feb 2016 & had no trouble with them. They seem to be the only ones offering these package deals for British ships plus NCL & MSC

They had my sympathy until I saw it was a Sunwing flight. Sunwing has a notorious reputation for flight delays. I'm guessing 95% of the vacation travel horror stories I've heard have been with Sunwing Vacations. They provide the cheapest packages for a reason. One has to decide if the dollars saved are worth the risk of losing a day or two of your precious vacation spending hours in an airport wondering when you'll get to your destination or when you'll get home. For me, the answer has always been no.

Neither would I fly in the day of departure, especially in winter. But again, that's a personal decision, I won't criticize anyone who chooses to take that risk. We are flying in the Wednesday before our Saturday cruise departure and even that is no guarantee winter weather won't play havoc with flights.

As someone else mentioned, getting rebooked after flight cancellations is not always easy. My husband was once flying home to PEI from Vancouver and got stuck in Halifax because of weather related flight cancellations. It was four days before they could get him rebooked on a flight. It's a 3 hour drive.

Always sad to hear about pax missing their ship's embarkation and you simply can't make up for the lost time enjoying the ship, even when not self-insured & covered for the extra expenses to catch up. Not a good way to celebrate New Year's Eve.

Keep in mind that airline/airport & inflight delays aren't just related to winter blizzard ... summertime storms caused more delays & missed cancellations than snow, sometimes an ice storm with a 1/4" coating is all it take to shut down ground ops outside the terminal until deicing can be repeated, as flights lined up on the taxiways waiting for ATC clearance for their routes. Frozen switches & mechanical malfunctions on jet bridges are as much problems as a massive blizzard when temperature take a deep plunge ...

These are true even if booked on a non-stop ... like when the inbound aircraft triggered a delayed connections, even with a freshly rested pilot & crew ready at Flight Ops lounge waiting.

That brings up another element - do carry-ons and keep a change of clothes & all essentials in a personal/cabin bag if flying on a small commuter jet ...we've made connections but our checked bags didn't get delivered by courier services until 8 hours later (paid by the airline to our hotel, late evening.)

I also like to travel a day ahead but as you mentioned you can have problems any time of the year. I was going to visit friends in St. Louis and arriving early afternoon from Syracuse, NY. I was traveling a weekday in July. We had to land in Rochester ,NY which is just 2hours west of Syracuse.. They were having bad weather in Detroit where I had to change planes. We were in Rochester for a few hours. Then we were okayed for Detroit. After we landed they had strong storms so the next flight was delayed a long time.In between I keep calling my friends telling them not to go to the airport because of the continual delays and I would call them when I landed.

Long story short I arrived 9 hours after my scheduled time.

Safe travels everybody in 2018 !

Sali

WE drive to the port and still come in the day prior.

Right there with you (unless the port is Canaveral)!

I recall one cruise out of Miami - we were driving down the day prior and ended up in a 3 hour (delay) traffic jam. I'd have been going NUTS had it been day of!

I hope they can manage to have a great cruise after they are able to meet up with the ship.

The best advice I have ever read on CC was to fly in the day before the cruise. I travel frequently and have experienced delays and cancellations in bad weather and in good weather. Sometimes it has nothing at all to do with weather. Sure, flight delays can happen the day before the cruise, but at least you allow extra time for these things and can be rerouted, if need be, or even drive. When it happens the day of the cruise, you have no other options.
