kathy884 Posted February 11, 2018 #1 Share Posted February 11, 2018 My wonderful 81 year old parents (active seniors) will be cruising with us on the NCL Getaway. I am planning to get adjoining balcony rooms near one of the elevators, as dad has some mobility issues, but doesn't want to use a wheelchair or scooter and this will mean less walking for him for activities. As this is pretty far in advance, I will probably have many choices on location. What are your thoughts about cabins right next to the elevators? Would seven or nine cabins away from the elevators be better do you think for noise? I am open to any and all suggestions. We have five people in two cabins ages 22 - 81. There are some regular balcony and regular mid ship balcony rooms that are adjoining that I am considering on deck 13. If I don't mind a family balcony, there are lots of adjoining cabins on 12 that are this type? I couldn't tell any difference except being close to Splash Academy?? What is the difference? Do you think family balcony cabins could be a good choice for us or would we be better off sticking to the regular and mid ship balconies? There are lots of these adjoining family one near elevators on deck 12 of the Getaway. Thank you so much for your help.
MissJessicaB Posted February 11, 2018 #2 Share Posted February 11, 2018 We tend to go to bed relatively early for younger people (10-12 depending on what we did that day) so we generally like being away from the noise more than being close to the elevators just so we're not disturbed as often by loud drunk people. We don't tend to have mobility issues though, so if I did, I imagine I would favor being a little closer to the elevators.
mjkacmom Posted February 11, 2018 #3 Share Posted February 11, 2018 We are always in family balconies right by the elevators and kids clubs, never had a noise issue. We love being close to the stairs.

murcor Posted February 11, 2018 #5 Share Posted February 11, 2018 I like the rooms right by the elevators. Never found it noisy but I sleep with white noise...... Don't hesitate book it for your parents! Sent from my iPhone using Forums
phoenix1181 Posted February 11, 2018 #6 Share Posted February 11, 2018 DH (86) has mobility issues and refuses to us a scooter or wheelchair so I always book a mid ship balcony cabin as close to the elevators as possible. Since I generally book very early, we frequently cruise in the first cabin by the elevators. We've never had an issue with noise &, with some planning, the location keeps walking manageable for him. CruisinHarvey Posted February 11, 2018 #7 Share Posted February 11, 2018 Just off the Getaway last Sunday. It was our 4th times on her. DW likes Spice H2O to lay out. So, we always book a cabin near the aft elevators. A lot less walking. Anyway, as long as you don't book the cabins right there were it's open to hallway and stairs, we've never had a problem with noise at all. It's funny everyone goes for the mid ship cabins. Since there's only forward and aft elevators, that mean wherever they go they have to walk a fair way there and back all the time. We find we walk enough on our cruises. We don't need the extra steps.
Son of a son of a ... Posted February 11, 2018 #8 Share Posted February 11, 2018 Stay by the elevators ... housekeeping leaves carts in the hall and can be difficult to get around when there are other passengers, trays in the hall, etc.
Buford T Justiice Posted February 11, 2018 #9 Share Posted February 11, 2018 A couple of years ago we had a cabin right at the elevators, and with all the choices of cabins vowed never again. We travel holiday weeks, and there were just too many family reunions in the early morning hours... We book about six - eight cabins from the elevator lobby and haven't heard a peep
Paul Bogle Posted February 11, 2018 #10 Share Posted February 11, 2018 I agree with the others, closer to the elevator is better. We had a mini-suite and a balcony on opposite sides of deck 13 by the forward elevator bank on Breakaway and it was fantastic. We chose these because we were not sure which way the ship would dock in Bermuda and wanted to be sure we had one cabin overlooking the America's Cup races. We picked by the elevators so we could easily go from one side to the other. We were concerned about possible noise but we heard nothing. Plus being by the elevators was very convenient. It's a great choice in our opinion.
Rare mking8288 Posted February 11, 2018 #11 Share Posted February 11, 2018 (edited) See these, deck 9 Aft - elevators & stairs are behind thick walls, not sheetrocks. It's better than fwd & closer to popular dining venue, hallways & corridors are wider. Ours were 4 or 5 staterooms further back and never heard a thing, except for the late night party crowds coming thru. Those family balconies meant that there is a higher probabilities of children, kids & teens running up & down, especially during school breaks ... we sailed off seasons with fewer worries. I suggest looking at deck 11 or 10, maybe just forward of the AFT elevators/stairs (closer to mid-ship) portside ... if connecting & adjorning ones are available. Advantage - better/smoother ride if sea conditions are on the rough side and no smokers below from the Waterfront (neighbors that puff, well ... not suppose to) See this, unless you get unlucky with a corridor section unassigned to a Room Steward, these service carts will be there ... no matter what. The area closest to the "exits" for elevators & stairs would be the widest; and, more room to "squeeze" thru - into those recessed doorway openings. zqvol Posted February 11, 2018 #13 Share Posted February 11, 2018 We don't find the noise to be any different whether we are close to the elevators or far from them. The elevator lobbies are separated from the cabin hallways, and frankly just don't generate much nosie.

Look over the layout of what typically would be used and most frequently traveled. Dining, activity, casino, lounge, etc, etc, etc. Consider certain features are at front while others are near rear and some in the middle. But middle elevator isn't always going to mean less walking. Maybe a front or aft elevator would work better based on where they think most time will be spent. Onboard it's a lot of walking really no matter what. I probably do more walking the week of a cruise than I do any other week of the year. Hope they enjoy.
Newbcruiser1 Posted February 12, 2018 #15 Share Posted February 12, 2018 I just got off the Epic. Had a family room on deck 13 near the elevator and it was super quiet - no issues with elevator noise, noise from people, etc. Also had a mini suite on deck 10 on the Epic right by the elevator - no issues there either. Definitely a wise choice for your parents to be near the elevator as the ships are huge and it will be much easier for them! tammy531 Posted February 12, 2018 #16 Share Posted February 12, 2018 We were right by the elevators on the same level as the kids club on the Breakaway. We never heard hallway noise from either. I believe midship on the getaway is similar to the breakaway, and you will be far from the elevators. Sent from my iPhone using Forums

hladygirl Posted February 12, 2018 #18 Share Posted February 12, 2018 We are on the Dawn cabin 11612 right in front of the midship elevators. No doors or hallway to block the noise. Hope it is quiet enough. Noise doesn’t usually bother us though so crossing my fingers we made the right choice.

You have location location location - ignore that man behind the curtain controlling the elevators. In reality - the only noise the elevators make is the soft boing boing elevator at your service announcement. If you can hear that you need a new cellular phone company. The only difficulty is the people using the elevators - how loud the crowd - especially after a show event or just simple mayhem - as soon as the elevators arrive it will go away ! The elevator foyers are for the most part sound forgiving - it will all be a problem in the mind - nothing to worry or fret about these are not the noise making droids you where thinking about. Now about that man behind the curtain controlling the elevators you are not on a Disney ship !

Similar situation to yours. Hubby is 81, does have mobility problems as well and takes his walker. We love cabins near the elevator. Even in days gone bye before not being able to move too well, we loved being near the elevator. Only once did we have any issue with noise and it certainly wasn't a deal breaker. We had a family with several kids, just down the hall. We would hear them as they headed for the elevators. Even then it didn't really bother us, we just knew when they about to get on the elevator. Rare BirdTravels Posted February 12, 2018 #21 Share Posted February 12, 2018 We only accept rooms near elevators. The halls are narrow and on the Getaway, it is a LONG walk if you are between the elevators. There is never any problems with noise from the elevators which are separated from the hall. HOWEVER, we have noted more kids running in the halls in the Family areas. Inconsiderate Parents don’t take accountability for their kids. Thump thump thump thump. But, that is mostly in the day.
