My review of Zaandam

Recommended Posts

Thank you for taking the time to write your review.

Glad you enjoyed your cruise and loved the Zaandam.

Great pictures -- thank you for sharing them.

It has been years since we sailed on the Zaandam. I do remember that our first cruises on her (back-to-back) cruises was in the summer of 2000 when she first came out. Then a few years later she did several 10 day cruises which we did -- more back-to-back cruises.

OP thank you for the review and for the lovely photos. We are sailing on Zaandam in July and have been eagerly waiting for any info and photos of her post dry-dock. Thank you for taking the time and effort to post them. Much appreciated.

Now I'm even more excited about our cruise!

We too would like to thank you for the great review. We will be on the Zaandam in August as it is the sister ship to the Volendam which we have been on multiple times it will be like going home.

Thanks again

I wasn't planning on taking a cruise this month but I was playing around online and stumbled across a 5 day Pacific Coastal on HAL. The days fit in perfectly with my work commitments and best of all it was on Zaandam. For a long while I have wanted to try this class of HAL ship having previously sailed on the larger vessels. She did not disappoint. I know much has been written about Zaandam so I won't bore you with every little detail but I would like to share my thoughts of the ship. I literally booked this a couple of weeks ago and was trying to find information about the interiors since dry dock. I had done a fair amount of research for this class of ship and was familiar with what they ship looked like prior to this recent dry dock (thank goodness for the internet and for Youtube videos). There was very little out there on the new decor so I have taken a bunch of photos which I will upload at the conclusion of this review. I hope that it will excite those of you with Zaandam bookings and I hope it will encourage some of you to book a Zaandam voyage.

Embarkation:

What a breeze. One of the joys about joining a cruise mid-way is the pleasant boarding experience. Only a handful of us were joining for the 5 day San Diego-Vancouver itinerary so we were processed very smoothly and went on board around 1:30pm and into our stateroom.

Accommodation:

We have only sailed on larger HAL ships; Westerdam and Eurodam to be exact. For our prior three HAL trips we booked Neptune Suites. However, for this short trip we had a mid-ship Vista Suite. Upon entering it felt like a calm space. You could tell instantly the room was recently refreshed. I only had internet images to compare to but I could identify the new components easily. It had that new room smell which I love. New bedskirt, new bed accent throw, new sofa or possibly just new upholstery (I could not get a straight answer out of anyone!), new curtains, new net curtains (very pretty ones), new accent pillows, new desk chair (or newly upholstered). I found the entry way a bit cramped. The hallway as you entered the stateroom was narrow and I felt the many closet doors were awkwardly placed especially when trying to access the bathroom. Overall storage in the Vista Suite is really good. The bedroom and living area can be separated almost completely by a curtain which is always a nice feature. The living area is spacious and very comfortable. The cocktail table was incredibly heavy and took some effort to move it. It did not raise in height so dining ensuite as a couple might be challenging. We only had room service once for breakfast and found the table height an issue. The new TV (I think it was new) was very small and it was screwed into a large black platform that you could pull out and swivel. The whole thing looked like a make-shift improvement and was not thought out well, in my opinion. The balcony furniture was comfortable and clean so I wonder if that was also new. I did not take specific photos of the balcony furniture but when you see the images I will upload at the end of this review you can see it through the balcony door.

Dining:

I will keep this brief as we all have different tastes, different levels of expectation and different ideas of what constitutes good food. For context, I live in San Francisco where we are spoiled with amazing restaurants. I also primarily sail on Crystal, Silversea and Oceania so my cruise cuisine expectations are impacted by my personal experience. we dined one night in Pinnacle Grill and one in Canaletto. Both meals were very good and I regretted not booking Pinnacle on the last night for the chef tasting menu (next time!!!). The main dining room food was good, but to me it looked and tasted like banqueting food - like you would get a a nice wedding. I have no complaints I just didn't feel the food was outstanding. In saying that please know we had lovely evenings in the dining room and enjoyed our meals.

Beverages:

We purchased an Elite package. I know there have been many threads discussing the beverages on board. Here are my two cents... I certainly don't need 15 drinks a day but I really loved the fact the package included large bottles of Evian and the specialty coffees from Explorations Cafe. I would have two or three coffees throughout the day and two bottles of Evian which made life very easy with the EBP. Throw in a cocktail before dinner, maybe a glass of champagne and a couple of glasses of wine and we were ahead of the game. On paper the beverage packages always seem to be a bit pricey but for us it worked out nicely. I think the water and coffee could easily add up so it made the daily rate for the beverage package worthwhile. I felt the splurge for Elite was worth it alone for the champagne and better choice of wines. For others it may not be necessary to upgrade.

Entertainment:

Sadly we did not participate in any shows or events. For us we wanted a quiet relaxing time at sea enjoying each other's company and having some nice meals. It would have been nice to see the production shows but we opted not to. We also did not visit America's Test Kitchen. Next time we will.

Zaandam:

LOVED it. I know its an old ship - that does not worry me. I know there is rust if you look closely - again that does not worry me. I know there are pipes on the promenade deck that are wrapped in old white sticky tape - does not worry me. I know there are occasional smells and issues - again that does not worry me. Why did I love Zaandam? Firstly the size. 60,000 tons is perfect. I am used to sailing on smaller ships - its just my preference. Despite the fact we sailed full I did not feel crowded. The public spaces were laid out well and there seemed to be plenty of little nooks and crannies where you could curl up with a book and a coffee and enjoy a calm day at sea. The Lido, at times, was a bit busy but name me a ship where this isn't the case. We timed our visits to the Lido accordingly and did not have to battle crowds. I love the promenade deck. It is wide and was never busy. We would walk and talk for 'miles' with the sea surrounding us and breathing in fresh clean air. I could not be happier. I also liked the new decor in the areas that have been refreshed. I am certainly used to the brighter and more colorful HAL interiors so, for me, it was refreshing to see the new color palette. I found it calming and the blue/grey/gold resonated with me. Carpet has been changed out in many places such as the elevator and stairs, the main dining room, Pinnacle Grill, Crows Nest and I was told more carpet is on its way but apparently it was not all delivered during dry dock. I am sure some of you know more details than I - but that is what I was told when I asked the crew. The newly reimagined Crows Nest is welcoming with lovely seating areas which have been refreshed (I never saw the old one, remember, so I did not have the image of the DJ booth and dance floor of yesteryear). They changed up the bar in Crows Nest apparently and this new one is really nice. The Explorations Cafe and new library is really lovely and well laid out and its a great social spot or perfect for a quiet read and a coffee. I am not sure what was in this area before but I was very happy to see this new-to-Zaandam feature.

Disembarkation:

A breeze! We decided to spend the day in Vancouver seeing friends and visiting the Van Dusen Botanical Gardens so we were able to disembark around 9am. Being independent and being able to choose from a selection of disembarkation times was convenient. We enjoyed a leisurely breakfast ensuite and then walked off the ship when our color was called.

Overall:

Were there a few things that could be improved - of course there were, but overall we had a great time. I loved the ship, we met some nice people and we will be back for another HAL cruise and most likely sticking with the smaller vessels. I would like to sail on Rotterdam and Amsterdam. I also have my eye on Prinsendam as that is one I really want to experience as she is steeped in so much history.

I will upload some photos of our cabin #6166. I will also include some photos of the newly renovated spaces. There are two photos of the main dining room carpet and a couple of photos from the Pinnacle Grill. The chairs and carpeting in Pinnacle are really elegant.

If anyone has questions I will be more than happy to try and answer but please remember this was my first Zaandam so I won't be the best resource if you have specific questions about what she looked like before the dry dock.

Thanks for reading,

Ashley

Thank you for the pictures and review! 12 more days for us!

I had booked this last year and looked forward to the cruise. The pictures shown from OP were beautiful. I had cabin 1827 which I thoroughly enjoyed although I don't believe it was quite as updated as his suite. My "ONLY" complaint was the tv. It was not the updated one he mentioned (and that I had on another HAL cruise in Oct. 2017). It has 4 news stations, 3 movies and the picture was rarely clear. The room stewards and guest relations people were unbelievable in their kindness. I chose open dining and loved meeting new people each night. Most of them were Canadians and they were all so very friendly. My one main goal of this cruise was the on-off bus ride throughout San Francisco. I wanted to ride it all the way through first and then go again and get off at certain places. The city streets were a mess. Either there was road construction going on, or, building construction with workmen and trucks etc. in front of so many of the buildings. It was especially cold the day we were in port so sitting up on top (where I'm sure the view would have been better) was out of the question, down below if you sat on the left you could not see out the front. When the bus returned to the ship I had planned on just walking down to Pier 39 on my own but again it was so cold I just gave up. The sun did come out a few hours later but by then I was warm and cozy. I took the backstage tour and really enjoyed that. Especially the question and answer part with the singers and dancers. I went to one of the "meet with ----" programs and wish I had gone to all of them. I went to the one with the cruise director. Ours was wonderful but sadly he was crossing over to another ship the day we returned to port. I'm not a fancy cook but I did go to one of the cooking demonstrations and enjoyed that. Oh, I finally realized that the movie of the day in the theater is shown the next day in your cabin so if you can't get to the theater you have another shot . 24/7. Getting on and off the ship was a breeze. The ship transport to the airport was efficient . Should have taken 30 min. but their was a marathon in Vancouver that Sunday morning and many streets were blocked off. There was one couple on board that were going to miss their flight and one that was kind of "iffy" but since most of us were booked for noon or after we were OK. We left the sally port at 9:00 and instead of being at the airport at 9:30 we arrived at the bus parking lot at 10:30 and were finally allowed to proceed on the bus to the airline departure terminals at 10:30. Inside the airport could not have been more organized. I walked right up to the Air Canada desk, everything was explained, I moved right along and was at my gate almost 2 hours before my 12:55 flight. To pay for your suitcase they prefer a credit card to US cash but the restaurants will take US cash but change will be in Canadian money. All in all this was a really nice little trip. Maybe next time I will take it in the reverse order in early fall so I can see more of S.F. Oh, I also learned from fellow passengers that one could have stayed on the ship another day and gotten off in Seattle!!! That was never explained to me and it would have been much less stressful.

Darlipoo - thank you for adding your comments to this Zaandam thread. Sorry to learn of your experiences driving around San Francisco. It is our home town so we decided to have a 'sea day' and enjoyed Zaandam with so many of the guests ashore doing excursions. The traffic congestion, the construction and chaos downtown sadly is a daily nightmare for all of us. I hope that you return and get to spend a little more time exploring San Francisco. The weather will certainly be better in the fall as this is our most favorable weather in the city.

With regards to staying on board to Seattle you were misinformed. For those of us who booked the 5-day Pacific Coastal we were not permitted to do the 1-day cruise offered from Vancouver-Seattle. It is due to the Jone's Act. HAL sent notifications to those passengers booked on the 5-day to remind us. The passengers who remained on board to Seattle were on the full Fort Lauderdale-Seattle itinerary (24 nights I believe). I hope that helps explain the situation.

With regards to the TV.... did I have a 'new' TV or was it an older one? It was silver in color, not very large, and it was screwed in place on a much larger platform. Like you the quality of my picture was weak. Many times the channels would not come in but for such a short cruise it did not bother me. If I was on board for a longer sailing I would have wanted a better quality picture image.

To others who have added this review to their roll call thread.... THANK YOU.

It appeared to me from your cabin photos that the TV was of the older sort, especially if it or the platform it was attached to swiveled. The newer TVs are wall mounted, usually across from the bed, and much larger. Was there a DVD player in or under the TV or platform or space for one?

Again, thanks for your efforts here and thanks to Darlipoo for adding her thoughts as well. :)

Lovely pictures! Thanks for sharing! Definitely should cruise more often on these smaller ships before they are being extincted ... just like what LeBron did to the Toronto Raptors lol [emoji23][emoji23][emoji23]

Our first cruise was 9 years ago on RCI Liberty OTS and my family have been in the mindset of "the larger the better" and I was trying to convince them that's not the case. DW and I did the Veendam last month and I definitely loved it but DW still not convinced yet.

Wow! May I express my sincere appreciation for such a current and detailed review of the ZAANDAM! You took a lot of time and trouble to help others and I am so glad that I found this under a different sailing. We cruise Zaandam on June 18th and I am, as always, looking forward to the next cruise! I also cruise A LOT and hope to see you at a CC M&G someday! Thanks again!

Thanks for your review and photos. Other than the updated colors in the carpet and furniture coverings, I really didn't see much difference from what I experienced when I was aboard in January. The "reports" that the Atrium's sculpture--the Organ--was to be removed during her dry dock proved to be as bogus as I thought they originally were.

One afternoon in the Crow's Nest, I spoke with some employees of a Company that had been employed to plan the dry dock while we were en route to Buenos Aires. They were taking measurements, etc. From what I "thought" I heard from them, the changes to the Crow's Nest appears to be much less than what your photos show. In my opinion: thankfully!

Thank you for your wonderful review. My husband and I will be on the Zaandam for the June 4-June 18 sailing to Alaska and it was great to be able to read your comments and see your wonderful photos.

gigmom23,

We're on the same sailing! Can't wait.

Ashley,

Thank you for your wonderful review and pictures. I do have one question. Were any USB charging plugs added anywhere in the cabins?

Thanks for the review. Also interested if USB chargers were added to the power boards at the desk or headboard.

Noted that they still have the tub in the bathroom, some other review here showed new stand-up showers and new bathrooms...?

We're going to be on the Zaandam (again, as we did Alaska last year on her) in January 2019 for South America. Prefer the stand-up shower to the bathtub that was a hassle getting in and out.

I'm not the OP, but was on this cruise and will chime in and say that at least in our cabin there were no USB chargers added.

We were in one of the cabins with the new showers and the thread you mentioned was probably the one where I posted photos (https://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2624172). HAL notified us a few days prior to the cruise that our cabin #3339 would have one of the new showers. Here is the message that we received:

This is to advise guests who've booked Ocean-view staterooms on board Zaandam

that during the April 2018 dry dock, the bathrooms in the below staterooms will

be updated to a shower-only configuration:

Lower Promenade Deck: D3331 - D3370

Main Deck: C2564 - C2647

Please note, this change does not affect all Ocean-view staterooms, only the

specific staterooms noted above. We thank you for your attention to this matter

and look forward to welcoming you on board.

The glass shower was wonderful! It occupied the same space as the old bathtub and had a large, adjustable shower head. The walls in our bathroom had also been replaced. Friends we were traveling with had one of the original bathrooms and still had the coral colored tile walls.

We are also going to be on the Zaandam in January for the South America/Antarctica itinerary. Unfortunately we won't have a cabin with the new showers then. :(:(

Utahtea and others... I am not sure how many 'new' charging points were added to the Vista we were in but we just used the plugs on the desk area. I did notice the USB chargers on the lamp closest to the windows. We did not use it.

With regards to the bathtub I wish there was a walk-in shower in the Vista. For laughs my husband got in a bath. He is 6'3". It was a tight squeeze. I also commented on how challenging it would be to climb over the tub when we get into our senior years. I personally love a good soak in a tub but only when its big enough to actually accomplish the task at hand. The size of the tubs in these small bathrooms is so silly and I think a nicely remodeled shower would make the bathroom look and feel more spacious. I tried to poke my head into a ocean-view stateroom to see the new showers but when casually walking along the corridor there never seemed to be any doors open for me to glance in.
