What items are prohibited onboard a Royal Caribbean cruise ship?

A

Weapons, illegal drugs, and other items that could interfere with the safe operation of the ship or the safe and secure environment of our guests and crew are prohibited. The following are examples of items that guests are not allowed to bring onboard. These and other similar items will be confiscated upon being found. Alcoholic beverages, illegal drugs, flammable liquids, explosives, and dangerous chemicals will not be returned.

Prohibited items:

  • Firearms & Ammunition, including realistic replicas.

  • Sharp Objects, including all knives and scissors. (Note: Personal grooming items such as safety razors are allowed. Scissors with blade length less than 4 inches are allowed.)

NOTE: The only exception to this policy are curling irons and hair straighteners. Matches and normal lighteners are allowed onboard. However ""torch lighters"" and novelty lighters that look like guns are not allowed onboard. Torch lighters emit a powerful concentrated flame, and therefore are prohibited.
  • Baseball Bats, Hockey Sticks, Cricket Bats, Bows & Arrows

You might find a large selection on the seized item table when you complete your cruise. Amazing what people will try to bring onboard and they often forget to pick it up when they leave.

Big lessons learned here. We had no idea that a steamer was prohibited but we've brought one along all these years without realizing.

However, Bob in another thread mentioned that some people simply leave their wrinkled clothing hanging in the bathroom while they take a hot shower, that's a good suggestion and it will help save us some room in our packing.

  • 2 months later...

Does anyone know why clothes steamers are not allowed? I could understand it in the old days they were less safe, but my new one has self shut off and does not get hot on the outside. What I don't understand is if I can bring a curling iron or hair straightener why not the steamer, some of my older curling irons are a much bigger fire hazard then the steamer.

They would have a mutiny on their hands if hair appliances were prohibited.

The auto-off switches are famous for failures, just look back to Mr. Coffee in the 80's when they almost went out of business over lawsuits from house fires caused by their auto-off switches failing. If the auto-off switch fails, even if the steamer doesn't get hot on the outside, the heating element will heat the plastic water reservoir until it melts or smolders, and can start a fire. The ships routinely take the coffee makers and hair dryers that are supplied in cabins out of service for inspection and testing. We were testing one in the electrician's shop when it went up in flames. This was about 10 years ago.

If the cruise lines thought they could get away with banning hair care appliances, believe me their insurance underwriters would jump to do it in a heartbeat.

Downy Wrinkle Free works great !

I have ironed most of our clothes on Princess cruises ( laundry rooms) and NCL ( irons and boards provided on request). I know... I am on vacation, but stil, neatness counts IMHO !

We took a Celebrity cruise this Summer, where ironing was not available. I followed advice on CC about the Downy product, but was doubtful that it would work.

I was pleasantly surprised and I will not do ironing again on any cruise.:D

I take an empty small water bottle with a spray attachment, purchased at Walmart. I fill it with water and spray all our clothes as I unpack and hang them up. Sometimes a little hand-smoothing on the bed. The moisture of all the clothes in the closet together helps all of them lose their wrinkles. Works every time, even on my husband's sport coat.

Oh, it works for "bed hair", too!

They scan things like they do at the airport. When they see something that catches their eye, they do a more in depth examination, or call you to the "naughty room" so they can inspect. They do that with booze too, so its a combination of safety and them trying to protect their bottom line.

The security people are human. They miss things and that's probably how your friend kept his travel steamer.

I roll all of our casual clothes. Once they are put on a hanger the few wrinkles come out quickly.

Our dress clothes I leave on the hangers, cover them with a plastic dry cleaner bag, fold them in half and lay them on top of our rolled clothes. Never a wrinkle!!
