Three decks is a long way for smoke to travel, rather surprising. Certainly not pleasant, but you are taking an accepting, moderate attitude. There was a passenger directly below our balcony who smoked all day long on his verandah. We reported him to Guest Services, and he was warned and caught several times but kept smoking. I went out to the balcony to see if I could spot the offender, knowing that balcony smoking is a major safety hazard on a cruise ship. Not only did I not see anyone (and the aft corner balconies get a good view of other balconies) but the odor wasn't apparent outside, only inside our cabin. Seasick Sailor Posted June 28 #1159 Share Posted June 28 On Rotterdam this year we were in cabin 5055. We had smoke coming from people on deck 8. Saw them clearly, both smoking. I said something to them and they saw and heard me. Next morning, same thing. I called Guest Services and never saw them smoking again. I was wondering if the smoke also enters the Crows Nest area and affects that area. I was also considering booking a cabin outside of the Crows Nest and was curious if some of those cabins are affected by smoke from the Oak Room. We spent a lot of time in the Crows Nest and I never saw anyone smoking in the Oak Room. If they did I never smelled any second hand smoke. Often when the doors open between the Lido restaurant and the smoking area, the smoke does waft in. It's really unpleasant. On one NCL ship there was a person smoking a cigar on his veranda, just one deck up and one cabin forward from us. I reported it to the customer service desk and nothing happened. The next time that person was smoking on the veranda I call customer service and said, "either you can go to this persons room and tell them not to smoke or I can do it, which would you prefer?". The first time I reported the guy, guest services security people came to our cabin first to see the guy smoking below us, then talked to the guy. The next day the guy was smoking on his balcony again and a call to GS got him another reprimand. We were on board the NS a couple years ago and even though smoking was only allowed in half the casino the air quality was a problem for me since I have asthma. We were on the Koningsdam last November and the smoking in the whole casino was horrible. Smoke propagated up the stairwells near the casino and out to the shops. It was the worse smoking I can remember on any ship. HAL needs to step up like other lines and ban smoking in all indoor venues like the casinos. No smoking of any kind will be permitted on any stateroom verandah. Designated Smoking Areas: Eurodam, Nieuw Amsterdam, Noordam, Oosterdam, Westerdam, Zuiderdam Sea View Bar area* Oak Room (Noordam only, including cigar and pipe smoking) Koningsdam, Nieuw Statendam, Rotterdam Sea View Bar area* Casino-smoking is allowed in designated areas for active players only and only when outside of 12NM from the Netherlands Volendam, Zaandam Sea View Bar area* Casino-smoking is allowed in designated areas for active players only and only when outside of 12NM from the Netherlands Sports Deck, outside Crow's Nest Cigar and pipe smoking is not allowed anywhere inside the ship; it is only permitted on the outside decks where smoking is otherwise allowed.
