CallyCruzer Posted January 28, 2019 #1 Share Posted January 28, 2019 We are on a cruise this fall that ports in Civitavecchia from 5:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. We have spent a week in Rome and been twice from a ship so we would like to find something else to do that day. Anyone have suggestions? Prefer not to rent a car so would prefer places that we can get to either by train or bus. Thanks!

Grandma Cruising Posted January 29, 2019 #4 Share Posted January 29, 2019 We got the bus to Tarquinia. It’s a lovely walled town. It has a necropolis which we didn’t see as its outside the town and it was a very hot day. However there is a great museum which has tomb replicas and lots of artefacts. You get the bus from opposite the cathedral. You have to buy the tickets beforehand and the supermarket near the bus stop sells them. Civitavecchia market is nice too.

Rare cruisemom42 Posted January 29, 2019 #6 Share Posted January 29, 2019 If you do opt for Tarquinia, I'd definitely recommend the necropolis -- the Etruscan painted tombs are exceptional. There's a little bus that leaves from close by the museum entrance and it's really close -- a matter of 10 minutes or so. If you ask at the museum you should be able to get the details. Grandma Cruising Posted January 29, 2019 #7 Share Posted January 29, 2019 When we were there the lady in the museum told us the little bus wasn’t running.
Rare fabnfortysomething Posted January 29, 2019 #8 Share Posted January 29, 2019 we got together a group from the roll call and did a private tour to Tarquina which included the necropolis-really interesting we usually avoid museums preferring to spend more time outside-coming from the UK we like the sun as we don't see it that often theres a reason for the song "mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the mid day sun" however the museum in Tarquina where all the artifacts from the tombs are displayed is worth it not least that its an old palace/rich persons home and very interesting archaeology wise
Rare cruisemom42 Posted January 29, 2019 #9 Share Posted January 29, 2019 (edited) Here is some additional info (from the Civitavecchia port site): https://civitavecchia.portmobility.it/en/tarquinia-and-etruscan-necropolis-monterozzi If the small shuttle to the Necropolis isn't running for some reason, there is a major bus stop also within a block and you can catch a bus there as well. Also note that both are closed on Mondays. Edited January 29, 2019 by cruisemom42

Giantfan13 Posted February 7, 2019 #13 Share Posted February 7, 2019 We also had been to Rome for a week the year before and now, here we were, with a port day in Civi, so what to do. We also wanted to do something just a bit different, something most others won't be doing, so we opted for a day at a thermal spa. https://civitavecchia.portmobility.it/en/ficoncella-thermal-baths We thoroughly enjoyed our day there. Now it is hard to get to, as you need a taxi and it wasn't a cheap ride, but the baths only cost about 2-3 Euros depending on how long you want to stay. It isn't a glamorous spot, but the three pools that were open were great and we were the only tourists there, and had a wonderful time meeting the locals. My DW also said the pains she was having in her legs were gone when we returned to the ship. We made arrangements for the taxi to pick us up at a certain time and he was right on time. You want something different, this was it for us. Cheers Len
