PORT OF DUBLIN

Question for someone who has previously sailed into the Port of Dublin...how likely are we to be able to get off

the ship around 7 and get to downtown (taxi or limo?) by 8 ?  We'd like to book a tour that departs around

8:30 from downtown.  Is it too risky to try to do this on arrival day ?

I don’t know what time your ship docks to best advise you. We got off our ship at 7:30 for an 8:10 excursion leaving from a hotel downtown and easily made it. Our taxi driver said we beat the traffic by leaving that early. We Overnighted there, and the next morning, we went to get a taxi at 8:00, and wow was it a difference! No taxis were available, and there was a line to get one. We finally got on the road, and the taxi driver said traffic was so bad downtown that there was no way we’d make it to our Trinity College reservation at 9:00. It was a very stressful drive. We finally asked him to drop us off a few blocks from it, and we High-tailed it on foot to get there jusssssst in time. So, moral of the story, leave at 7:30, not 8:00!

You need to prebook taxi.

There won't be many taxi come to the port area.

Dublin native here.  If you can get off the ship by 7 or even 7.30 you should not have any difficulty reaching city centre by 8.30.  There is a tram (Luas) to city centre within a 10 or 15 minute walk from the port you can take if you have difficulty getting a taxi. The tram will not be impacted by traffic.

Like others have recommended you will need to pre-book.  The Terminal is in an Industrial Port with no public transit into the port.   There is a tram within a 10 minute walk.  Distance by Cab is only about 10 - 25 minutes dependent on traffic.   It is only about 5 Km (3 miles).

Wow, I wasn't aware this is an industrial port.... When would you suggest should we leave the ship for an Air Lingus flight to London at 11AM? Thanks !

to OP, sorry to highjack the post

Take the Celebrity Transfer.I think you have the same flight that I had last year.

It only takes 20 minutes to airport.

We have been to Dublin twice via cruises.  Once with Celebrity and another with NCL.  BOTH had a shuttle that took you to the area near the Trinity College.  From there, you can take the HoHo bus or walk yourselves.  Not sure where your tour departs from?

I posted a question regarding the availability of getting a taxi when we depart our transatlantic in Dublin on May 6.  A reply came from someone from Dublin that there were taxis available if ships were in port.  Guess we'll find out when we get there, but she said no need to pre book.

Thought I read here on CC that Dublin is an industrial port....

How often are cruise ships in port?

Not having ever been to Dublin, can you suggest who to prebook a taxi with and how to go about doing this?

Thanks, Mike and Mary

Hi alo,

Book your taxi in advance of your trip.

Cabs do not cruise the port.

I was told that, drivers who do pick up pax are not permitted to call in the need for more cabs.

Ships crew and dock workers do not get priority service.

Enjoy your visit.

We were on Silhouette last August and we were scheduled to dock at one location in Dublin but only when approaching the port, it was obvious the location had changed. The taxis and tour operators were on the ball and all turned up at the right place.

Originally, no free shuttles were to be offered, but as the new berth was further out, the shuttles were free.

Plenty of taxis were lined up (both pre-booked and vacant).

We departed the Eclipse last May after TA and the situation was abysmal.  We were the first of the season and new to home port in Dublin.  Were more taxis available as season went on for any of you cruisers that sailed later in the season?

Thanks,

Gail

Hey Pete,

>  A reply came from someone from Dublin that there were taxis available if ships were in port.

That is true.

There will be several thousand pax and a couple of taxis.

It took us almost 3 hrs to get a cab, shared, into town.

Book a cab in advance.

What about Uber. Any restrictions?

Uber using individually own autos is prohibited in Dublin.    If you use Uber they book rides via Taxi and Limo companies depending on service requested.

We were on the Eclipse also last May, and "abysmal" is not a strong enough word to describe the chaos.  We prebooked a taxi, but the port security was stopping the taxis.  Never saw our taxi.  We managed to hitch a ride with a small group in a van.  We only had to get to a hotel.  This year when we arrive on May 6, we will be catching a flight at Dublin Airport at 11:15 am, which is too early for Celebrity's airport transfer.  We're trying to find a shuttle/transfer, but the websites do not show Dublin cruise port as an option.  Any suggestions?

Perhaps contact Limos for Less and prebook airport transport. We used this company 3 times last May prior to and after our sailing on the 28th (although none were tight for time constraints.) When we disembarked, we stayed an extra night in Malahide but used Limos for Less to transport from the port to our hotel - we had a driver waiting for us and it was very stress-free. https://www.lflcs.com/

Don't forget May 6th is a public holiday in Dublin.  That might impact the availability of taxis etc, especially so early in the day.  I also wonder if the fact there are two different cruise ports in Dublin (although in fact neither are in Dublin) might account for the different experiences?  Larger ships can dock at Alexandra Quay which is the Industrial Port 1.5Km from Dublin Center.  But you can also tender in to Dun Laoghaire which is actually 8 Km outside Dublin.
