thunter1224 Posted July 9, 2019 #1 Share Posted July 9, 2019 I want to do an Alaskan Cruise. But I really don't want the mega ship feel. what is a smaller size ship that does Alaska out of Seattle ? maybe 1,000 - 1,500 passengers
Rare Hlitner Posted September 10, 2019 #2 Share Posted September 10, 2019 Consider stretching your budget and cruising on Seabourn. Not only is it a high quality cruise line, but they operate relatively small ships. We recently took a 14 day Seabourn Sojourn Alaskan cruise which was quite nice. The vessel has a capacity of about 450 and I think we only had about 410 on our voyage. There are no queues (lines) on the ship, tendering is painless, and the vessel is able to have its own Zodiac Tours (in many Alaskan areas)...although these are not inexpensive. We had previously cruised in Alaska on larger ships and there is simply no comparison. In this case small is definitely better :). Hank

CruiserBruce Posted September 28, 2019 #5 Share Posted September 28, 2019 Holland America usually has at least 2, frequently 3, of their smaller ships (12-1400pax) operating in Alaska in a normal season.
princeton123211 Posted September 28, 2019 #6 Share Posted September 28, 2019 Ill second the Seabourn recommendation-- we did a 12 day with them from Vancouver and it was really wonderful. 400 passengers on our sailing and never felt crowded. The ability to use zodiacs for landings is something you don't get on a large ship and allowed us to see more than we would have otherwise. DaveOKC Posted September 29, 2019 #7 Share Posted September 29, 2019 We just did a 14 day cruise on the Amsterdam (Holland America) out of Seattle and loved it. Got us real close to the Hubbard ans Sawyer Glaciers. I believe it only holds 1400 passengers. This itineary is fantastic, as it goes to out of the way ports and to Anchorage. riffatsea Posted September 30, 2019 #8 Share Posted September 30, 2019 I have friends going to Alaska next summer on Ponant. The ships are much smaller than what has been described above! The ship holds about 260 passengers.

xlxo Posted October 1, 2019 #10 Share Posted October 1, 2019 The Maasdam with 1200 passengers sailing out of nearby Vancouver may be of interest... https://www.hollandamerica.com/en_US/find-a-cruise/A0L14A/M031.html
Heidi13 Posted October 2, 2019 #11 Share Posted October 2, 2019 Viking Orion is just below your range at 930 pax. Sailing 10 day alternating N'bd & S'bd between Vancouver & Seward.
Splinter Posted October 21, 2019 #12 Share Posted October 21, 2019 Crystal also usually has a few cruises to Alaska annually. Their ships are on the medium size, but their cruises are expensive. There are also small ship expedition type cruises available, although most depart from places other than Seattle (such as Vancouver or Juneau). ATSEAMYLIFE Posted October 23, 2019 #13 Share Posted October 23, 2019 You will want a smaller ship for Alaska. They get in closer to the glaciers. Save the "mega" ships for the Caribbean.
