Is ther free snorkelling on the island or do you have to pay for an excursion

If you have your own equipment, then you can snorkel, otherwise you have to take an excursion, which is really just an equipment rental. You can then go as you wish.

There is no charge to enter the ocean.  Therefore there is free snorkeling (with your own snorkeling equipment).

Entering the ocean is free, but if you use the backstroke while swimming you are required to give everyone on the beach a US one cent piece.  Please have correct change. 😎

Just there this weekend, and they require everyone who is snorkeling (whether you have your own gear or not) to be wearing a snorkel vest. We have our own, so not a problem for us, but if you don't have one you need to rent one from them before you can snorkel.

Don't know Bob. We had our own, so we didn't have to go over to the rental shack to get one. They were directing everyone who didn't have one over to the shack to get one, but I don't know whether they were charging for them. (they used to charge ~$8/vest back in the old days, which is why we bought our own)
