Hong Kong riots

You'll notice quite a difference from 2013. We finished a cruise there in 2016 and stayed a few nights, then had a port stop there in 2018, and even in that short time it seemed to be more crowded, especially in Kowloon. Prior to those two visits the last time we were there was in 2007 and from then to 2016 was a very big change.

On the weekends it is even more crowded when they permit the mainland Chinese to come in and buy goods not available on the mainland  and gamble over in Macau at its 47 casinos.

I really hope it doesn't come down to them sending in the army, that is an escalation that would have serious ramifications on the residents and the tourists

I agree.  I reckon HK Tourism is already affected to a small degree.  Don't want it worse.  I have flown Cathay Pacific a couple of times to and from Heathrow, nice little stop over for a few days is Honkers.🥢

As it stands, they won't send in the army. That will just alienate other Hong Kongers as well as put offside other countries, which would make their efforts to take allies from Taiwan much harder.

If they had more dominance though, things would be different. But not now.

They are using some the army as a threat though even if it is just using it as propaganda at the moment.

Media reports this morning that there are some troop movements just outside of the HK administrative area.  Beijing flexing its muscles perhaps?

I think China will end up like the Soviet Union .

Ronald Reagan just out spent the USSR on the star wars program and the arms race.

Donald trump will bring financial disharmony to China and the government will loose its foothold like USSR.

Chinese love their money.

Not sure China will stop, they have a foothold just about everywhere around the world, all they have to do is call in the debts and all those countries will be crippled.

Uncle Sam and NY banks  are not beginners.

Just seen on the news that the demonstrations have moved to the airport and they intend to sit it out for the weekend in the International Arrivals Terminal .

Interesting times ,a old Chinese curse.

China has ordered the Hong Kong based Cathay Pacific to suspend staff who support pro democracy protests in the territory.

BBC

China's Aviation Authority has issued a major safety warning to Cathay Pacific (flights over mainland China).

Alarming, we normally fly Cathay to and from Europe via Honkers, great airline. The situation is getting dire there. I fear the Rulers in Beijing will send in the Chinese Army to quell the unrest.

I'd be surprised if they went that far. They're happy to keep the threat they may there, but taking such action would just escalate things as well as be problematic internationally so not achieve their aim of cooling things down.

On the abc radio this morning.

Because Cathay pacific employees were on strike, the Chinese military issued a warning to their planes in their airspace.

It could get nasty now with civilian main landers heading to HK to do battle with the protesters. If that happens police could well just stand back and let all hell break loose.

The tactics are starting to get serious now with protests starting and dissolving before appearing elsewhere.

What China announced was they:

1) require a full listing of all crew serving Chinese routes so they can investigate them beforehand (just like us getting visas)

2) Any crew involved who had been protesting/charged or similar to not work on those routes otherwise they will be charged (nice of them to tell people for once! But indicative that they're trying the heavy pressure tactic to discourage people in this case rather than their usual tactics of force as it's not suitable at the moment).
