Not really concerned because it is not high on my list to travel to. Already been there. It is a sign of things to come and I do not think it will get any better. The Chinese government is only going to get more aggressive and assertive and try to be more in control. They will not give up. Depending on how far China wants to take this the rioting probably will not stop and it is probably showing them what they will expect if they try to take Taiwan back or do similar in Macau. The whole area could possibly be worth avoiding in the future.

Our cruise finishes there on Oct 4.  Maybe we'll forgo our planned 4 day stay and come straight home.  Disappointing as haven't been there before.

We're in Hong Kong now on our way home from a cruise and haven't seen any sign of trouble. Protests appear to be only on the weekend and in a very small area easily avoided. It would be a shame not to experience this vibrant city, especially at night.

Macau is already part of China so there shouldn't be much of an issue of unrest there. The Chinese government chooses to run it as an autonomous state so they can have casinos since gambling is illegal in Mainland China (they have similar territories in Laos, Fiji and a planned one in Micronesia). You would think that would be the solution for Hong Kong but I think because a lot rich Mainlanders use Hong Kong to get their money out of China they want to shut it down. As for Taiwan that is just going to be all out war. Obviously they will lose but they will definitely get a few missiles out before they go down😂. But don't cancel any plans to visit Taiwan, (Taiwan is amazing and certainly worth a visit😻) that is still way in the future, China has a few countries left in the UN they need to convince to change their position on Taipei. They won't make their move till that happens😉.

I can recall the hysteria when there was a terrorist attack in Istanbul. Travelers were cancelling visits, cruise ships going elsewhere, travel alerts etc.

 If you were to ask those cancelling Turkey if they would feel safer going to UK what would be their reply I wonder? Compare the number of terrorist attacks in Istanbul with London. More attacks in UK? Hm?

For the record I have been to Turkey twice and London/UK three times in the last five years. I never felt unsafe in either place.

For the record I have been to Turkey twice and London/UK three times in the last five years. I never felt unsafe in either place.

While I agree with your reasoning, it is not always about how you may feel about visiting a place but also about if insurance and such will cover you in case of an incident.

Note that if visiting a country that is on the do not travel list, even twisting an ankle will likely not be covered.

The current troubles would not prevent me from going to Honkers, as the Brits used to call Hong Kong.   I was in HK and Macau 2 years ago for a week post QM2 cruise from Sydney to HK.  Lovely place.

 

I actually lived there in 56-57 with my British Army father and family.  This was during the Chinese riots, mainly in Kowloon re their fight for independence, the riots were orchestrated by the communists and many deaths occurred.   We lived in married quarters in the New Territories and went to school by Armoured car, guarded by Ghurka solders, we were safe, no dare attack the Ghurkas, fearsome warriors.  On another note, the whole Regiment 'cruised there' on HMT (Her Majesty's Troopship) 'Nevasa,' 6 week journey from Southampton to HK  and back after a couple of years.

 

Due to be in Colombo, Sri Lanka in March on Arcadia, not really worried about it.

We too love Hong Kong.  We haven't been back since 2013 though we used to go regularly, since 1976, especially when my sister and BIL lived there in Mid Levels.

We are so looking forward to returning in 8 weeks time when we board our Princess ship on its cruise back to Sydney. I have been watching the riots and they do seem to be away from Kowloon so hopefully we won't be troubled by them.

I am expecting repurcussions though as I am sure China will crack down and take over the island. I am amazed that they have left the riots go on for so long.

You'll notice quite a difference from 2013. We finished a cruise there in 2016 and stayed a few nights, then had a port stop there in 2018, and even in that short time it seemed to be more crowded, especially in Kowloon. Prior to those two visits the last time we were there was in 2007 and from then to 2016 was a very big change.

Indeed the Chinese Government have been quite patient re the riots, but I am sure they have given the message to the HK Administration...'crack down' or we will send the Chinese Army in, they have a million of them and they won't use tear gas and rubber bullets either like the HK Police who are are modelled on the pre 1997 Royal Hong Kong Police.
