We used to get nice loungers; now most balcony furniture is practically unusable it is so uncomfortable--and balconies keep getting smaller too. But, so far not a really big deal for us as we don't even want to sit by the pool or other busy area. (It was a problem when we sailed with several children and needed to be by the pool). We've always been able to find seats in a nice quiet area, although sometimes it takes some looking. I do agree that some cruise lines have very uncomfortable chairs on their balcony. Princess is one that immediately came to my mind. Haven't really had an issue with Carnival or NCL. Having said that, I do pay attention to balcony size when I book a room. On NCL Escape I discovered angled balconies that you can get for the same price as regular balconies and ask for a lounger on it. This was awesome. I have also had my first Aft balcony on NCL Getaway with 2 loungers and 2 chairs....absolutely loved it. I have my first Aft balcony booked on Carnival on the Mardi Gras next year. I am definitely becoming a balcony snob.

Putting nice stuff there is a waste for the cruise lines, can't monitize your time while you napping or enjoying stuff privately

Our room didn't have a coffee maker. I thought it was annoying but clever. Gotta get down to the casino floor for a cuppa 🙂 Since then the casino hotels I've stayed in do have coffee makers. The cost of those cruises over a couple of years would pay for an upscale cruise. We can't afford to cruise an upscale line every year (well, we could if we wanted to stick to places like the Caribbean) so we alternate with other trips that are more budget friendly to save discretionary income for cruising. Two cruises per year in an inside cabin does not equal one cruise on an upscale line.

Everyone has their preference and mine is to cruise as often as I can so I know the choice that I would make. A couple of years ago, we met a very nice couple on a cruise, and spent a lot of time with them. One evening we were talking about the options. Inside cabin, less cost, more cruises versus suite, more cost, less cruises. They were in an Owners Suite, we were in a Grand Suite. We all looked at each other, and about simultaneously said, "We are suite people." I have a close friend, who cruises a lot, but she does an inside. And only showers and sleeps in her cabin. Whatever works for you.

Actually it can if you add in all the extras you pay for that are inclusive on the upscale line, and you pick a lower priced itinerary on that upscale line. e.g. two Princess cruises - one at $164.06pp per day including drinks etc, the other at $179.35pp per day, totalling 343.41. Crystal cruise $324pp per day. Note: prices quoted are in AUD with exchange rate conversion from USD current at the time for the Crystal cruise.

They still make money off me one way or another.

Rare brillohead Posted August 21, 2019 #137 Share Posted August 21, 2019 That's what I love about cruising -- there's something for everyone. For people who really enjoy the suite experience on a cruise, they can do that. For people who really enjoy the public space experience on a cruise, they can do that. I'm one who typically does an inside room, and I'm not "suffering along with" or "putting up with" my inside room in the least -- it simply suits my needs. I'm a night owl who commonly sleeps from 4am to noon, so the pitch dark "cave" works well for me. After Tutti Salad for breakfast/lunch in the MDR, I spend my afternoons on the pool deck socializing with others. Evenings are spent in a lounge with cruise friends, at a show, in the nightclub, then I retire to my room to read for a while before turning in and repeating the whole thing all over again. My stateroom really is simply a place to sleep, shower, and change my clothes, and if I had a balcony or even a suite, that wouldn't change how and where I spend my shipboard time in the least. However, there are also people who like getting up in the morning and enjoying coffee and/or breakfast on their balcony while watching the sunrise, spending sea days on their balcony reading / napping / drinking a glass of wine (with their partner or alone), in the evening socializing with others over drinks in the suite lounge or watching the sunset from their balcony, etc. I have no envy of those with balconies or suites, and I hope they don't have pity for me in my inside room, for I am very happy there indeed. Honestly, if I won the lottery, I'm still not sure I'd give up my inside room!

You seem to have assumed that we sit around a cruise ship and drink all day just because I mentioned "drinks etc" which are extras on mass market lines, along with speciality restaurants, excursions, laundry, and other onboard spending. Perhaps I should have also mentioned daily gratuities. They aren't charged for Australians booking Australian cruises but, of course, the fares are usually higher. All those things, except excursions and laundry, were included on Crystal and we had sufficient OBC to cover all of our onboard spending. Plus the service and food was superb. We choose the cruises we do by itinerary, not just for the sake of being on a ship. We're equally comfortable cruising in an inside cabin as in a balcony and look for value for money with the cruises we choose. Sometimes a luxury cruise line is better value and provides better itineraries than a mass market cruise line.

All about value, agreed, sometimes sail outside suite, many times inside dark as a cave, all about what we are looking for like you. Love all the included perks sometimes get a drink, sometimes a drink package too. But aghast at how our society has become almost Wally like 😲
