Just added one to our suitcase 👍 I’ve been taking one for years, it lives inside my first aid kit, but I am told that a spoon handle in the bottle works well. How dreadful it would be if you were forced to finish the bottle. Perish the thought!

annieuk Posted August 28, 2019 #28 Share Posted August 28, 2019 We had a bottle of champagne in the cabin when we arrived on one cruise and drank some of it while unpacking. Finished the unpacking and it was time to go to the muster drill. We hadn't finished the bottle so looked forward to finishing it when we returned to the cabin. When we got back our helpful Cabin Steward had cleared the tray with the glasses etc away and also taken the unfinished bottle, presumably thinking we'd finished with it! My husband rushed off down the corridor and thankfully returned with the rest of the bottle. Our poor Steward was so apologetic, he thought's we had enough and didn't want the rest! Maybe if we'd taken a Champagne Stopper he would have realised we were intending to finish it. It was in an ice bucket so we hadn't seen the need to take it out and put it in the fridge - we will another time!
smj777 Posted August 28, 2019 #29 Share Posted August 28, 2019 In order to find/use the loo at night, we take a couple of those small battery powered imitation candles. They can be left on all night just inside the open bathroom door and can't be seen from the bedroom and a fresh battery will easily last2 weeks.

kruzseeka Posted August 28, 2019 #31 Share Posted August 28, 2019 Elastic band to improve grip to get stubborn bottle tops open. Extra trouser hangers - and for those ships with smaller wardrobe space, hanger extension clips: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Hanger-Connectors-Garment-Clothes-Connector/dp/B00UI1Z1RS
Scriv Posted August 28, 2019 #32 Share Posted August 28, 2019 (edited) Jim jams - couldn't bear having to abandon ship or jump down a chute in a nightie. Modesty prevails even in an emergency😂. And for those who don't know me, I am a lady. Edited August 28, 2019 by Scriv

Seriously, I always put my dressing gown on the edge of the bed on a ‘just in case’ basis.

Warmer too.

Yes indeed, even hitting an iceberg should allow enough time to dress in warm clothing and collect your medication, and dare I say money and jewellery, before heading to your muster station.

Oh that's alright then. Thanks for the reassurance that I will have plenty of time in the dark and the panic to sort through the wardrobe and my personal effects - and the gin bottle. Think I will keep to my jim jams though as base layer🤣 Edited August 28, 2019 by Scriv

Your clothes will be laid out ready for the next morning. And your valuables will be in the safe. Sorted.

Tablelamp Posted August 28, 2019 #41 Share Posted August 28, 2019 I think we all make contingency plans, but I bet in an emergency, we should forget everything. A new plan, go to bed dressed in warm clothes, with your life jacket hooked over one arm and your meds clutched in your other hand. Unless of course you feel the need to take your hand whisk, in which case leave your life jacket or your meds. behind. 1

Makes sense, you could tape it to the back of a dingy to create a mini out-board motor. 1

Tablelamp Posted August 28, 2019 #44 Share Posted August 28, 2019 We seem to be agreed that the necessities of a good cruise should include hand whisks and champagne stoppers.

BrianI Posted August 28, 2019 #46 Share Posted August 28, 2019 (edited) Have tried the various battery/electric milk frothers but found that the best one is a Bodum milk frother. Manually operated so no batteries required. Brian Edited August 28, 2019 by BrianI

Jules. Posted August 29, 2019 #50 Share Posted August 29, 2019 I’ve taken the battery operated tea lights before when I’ve cruised with my mum. She doesn’t like sleeping in total darkness (unlike me). I love the idea of a string of fairy lights draped around the picture frame, think I’m going to pinch that one 😍 I drink de caff tea and take a huge supply with me. Learnt my lesson when once I didn’t take enough with me and I had run out half way through the cruise. I took some of the tea bags from the buffet for use in my cabin and literally had a strip tore off me from a crew member about it. Oh and I also always pack some vitamin C!
