Rare CynCyn Posted August 31, 2019 #1 Share Posted August 31, 2019 Good Morning! I received this notice from Princess last night..... ITINERARY AND FLIGHT GUIDELINE CHANGE Please be advised that due to newly updated speed restrictions to safeguard the marine life in the area, we must allow more time for the passage to Los Angeles from Vancouver. As a result, Ruby Princess will now arrive in Los Angeles at 9:30 AM on Tuesday, September 24, 2019 rather than 7:00 AM as previously scheduled. Does anyone know if this is US or CAN based? I’m not complaining as I think it’s a step in the right direction, just curious and want to know more. Also curious if it will delay the shops and casinos opening on Day 1. I did this trip in the opposite direction in May and was disappointed that casino and most bars shut down when we hit Canadian waters.
Deesquared Posted August 31, 2019 #2 Share Posted August 31, 2019 I got the same notice last night for an upcoming California Coastal on the Star. I assume it's US based, as it affects all of our port stops in California. We will have less time in San Francisco, San Diego, Santa Barbara and LA, but no change in our arrival time back in Vancouver. Sadly, it cuts 3 hours off San Fran, 2 hours of San Diego, and 2.5 hours off our LA stops. But I'm glad marine life is being protected, in a small way. Rare CynCyn Posted August 31, 2019 Author #3 Share Posted August 31, 2019 I am so sorry you are losing all of that time! I was excited to get a little more time on that last morning but would be a little bummed to lose that many hours in port!
lx200gps Posted August 31, 2019 #4 Share Posted August 31, 2019 Hopefully this only applies to California itineraries and is not more widespread. Our next trip into San Pedro is not until September 2020 and we haven't received any notice of change yet because it's too far out. Pity the poor folks who have early but "legal" flights out of LAX, as I can't imagine Princess or the airlines will cover change fees for this,

Steelers36 Posted August 31, 2019 #6 Share Posted August 31, 2019 That is pretty late notice for anyone to make a flight change for a SEP date. I suppose regulations just changed all of a sudden? We don't sail on the west coast - as yet at least. But important to guard against unnecessary damage to marine life.

I was glad that I had a late (3:30pm) flight. I’ve googled for news articles and cannot find any.

Thankfully our flight was at 1400 but those with earlier flights that met the original earliest recommended flight time were affected. I didn’t talk to anyone affected so don’t know if anyone was able to switch to later flights.
lx200gps Posted August 31, 2019 #10 Share Posted August 31, 2019 We'll just have to sit by and wait for more info on the reasons for this, is scope, duration, etc. A similar ship speed reduction in the Gulf of St Lawrence, put in place due to ship collisions with North American right whales, was recently lifted after it was determine that there were no whales sighted in the affected areas. Perhaps this situation along the West Coast is for a similar reason?

satxdiver Posted September 1, 2019 #23 Share Posted September 1, 2019 This is appears to be California ports which says that it has to do with CA law and/or regulations. I doubt you will find anything on Princess about it.
vampiress Posted September 1, 2019 #24 Share Posted September 1, 2019 (edited) i wasn't looking on princess, i was looking for the laws, specifically the law that changed inthe past week or so causing people to last minute flight change. i found this about the VSRP but it is just a kudos post for ongoing compliance, not a change in the speeds or distance for compliance https://www.portoflosangeles.org/references/news_071219_vsrp Quote Ships voluntarily slow down to 12 knots as they approach or depart the San Pedro Bay port complex, generally at 20 nautical miles from Point Fermin. Since 2008, the Port of Los Angeles has offered incentives to shipping lines that achieve a 90 percent participation rate in the VSRP during a full calendar year. In 2009, the program was expanded to also include incentives for reducing speed at 40 nautical miles from Point Fermin.
